‘They said Vidhu Vinod Chopra bribed my with Rs 8 crore to not make OMG': Director Umesh Shukla opens up on PK comparisons
Back when Rajkumar Hirani's PK hit the theatres, there was considerable buzz around its striking resemblance to OMG: Oh My God!, the sleeper hit comedy directed by Umesh Shukla that released about a year earlier. While OMG was adapted from a theatre play written and directed by Shukla himself, PK was an original screenplay penned by Hirani and his long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi. Now, years later, Umesh Shukla has finally addressed the comparisons and longstanding plagiarism rumours in a candid interview with Friday Talkies. Speaking about the conceptual similarity between the two films, Shukla said: 'I think they might've had a similar idea in mind. If PK had released before my film, people might have said that mine resembled PK.' He also pointed out that his play had been running on stage long before the movie adaptation, and that many from the PK team were familiar with it. 'Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and writer Abhijat Joshi had all seen my play. So, when someone works on a similar subject, there's bound to be some reflection. If you're making a love story, and someone says 'I love you' in that film, well, of course they will, it's a love story.' Over the years, speculation has swirled that Shukla was paid off by the PK team, especially Aamir Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, to shelve OMG, considering the thematic similarities. Shukla finally addressed those claims head-on: 'At that time, there were even rumours that Vidhu Vinod Chopra gave me Rs 8 crore to not make the film. But that was just gossip, Nothing of the sort ever happened. All of them, be it Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, Chopra, or even Aamir Khan, are too talented and dignified to do something so petty, like offering money.' Also Read | Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani reunite after 3 Idiots and PK, announce biopic on the 'father of Indian cinema' Dadasaheb Phalke PK was widely compared to OMG soon after its release, fueling conspiracy theories that Hirani had paid Shukla to stall his project. In his defence, Hirani had firmly denied such claims in a statement to a leading daily: 'Please, please call Umesh Shukla and ask him, or call Paresh. This is absurd, How can someone say something like this?' Even Aamir Khan weighed in, calling the reports baseless: 'It's all lies… fabricated. You should be very careful about what you believe.' In earlier interviews, both Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi had clarified that the original screenplay of PK, conceived in the late 2000s, was markedly different. However, they later revamped it after realising it bore similarities to Christopher Nolan's Inception, which had just released. Ironically, by the time they completed filming and began editing, OMG: Oh My God! had hit the screens, and they again noticed a few thematic overlaps. Nonetheless, they stayed the course and released their film. Despite the controversy, PK went on to become a massive box office hit and is now considered one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.

Aamir Khan To Release Sitaare Zameen Par In Over 3,000 Screens In India
Last Updated: As per the latest report, Aamir Khan is determined to keep the film exclusively for theatrical release. Aamir Khan's upcoming film Sitare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, has generated significant buzz among movie enthusiasts. The film delves into powerful themes of inclusion, empathy and resilience, told through the inspiring stories of children with special abilities. Determined to make the film a success, Aamir Khan is going all out with its release strategy. According to recent reports, the actor plans to launch the film across approximately 3,000 screens nationwide. According to a report by Pinkvilla, Aamir Khan and his distribution team initially planned to release Sitare Zameen Par on 1,000 to 1,500 screens across India, with the intention of expanding based on audience demand over the opening weekend. However, the strategy has since evolved into a full-scale nationwide release. As per sources cited by the portal, several single-screen theatre owners and non-national multiplex chains approached Aamir Khan, expressing interest in screening the film at their venues starting June 20. A source known to the entertainment portal said, 'Though the genre has its limitations in the post-pandemic, the exhibitors are confident that the Aamir Khan factor, coupled with strong content, will draw audiences in larger numbers over the weekend. The exhibitor support for Sitaare Zameen Par is also coming from the 'No OTT' stance taken by Aamir Khan. The film will now release on 3000 to 3500 screens all across the country." Moreover, with Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir is making a game-changing move by refusing to sell the OTT rights to any platform, despite repeated offers. According to sources, the actor is determined to keep the film exclusively for theatrical release. Initially developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures, the film eventually became a solo venture for Aamir after the studio expressed reservations about the big-screen-only strategy. In response, Aamir reportedly bought back full control of the project, ensuring complete creative and distribution authority. Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy-drama starring Aamir Khan alongside Genelia Deshmukh. The film is described as a spiritual sequel to Khan's 2007 critically acclaimed Taare Zameen Par and is an official remake of the Spanish film Champions. The movie also marks the Hindi film debut of several newcomers, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. Salman Khan's Sanam Bewafa Was Almost Madhoo's Debut: ‘Auditioned But Didn't Get'
Last Updated: Madhoo Shah reveals if she regrets passing Baazigar, which became Shilpa Shetty's debut. She also recalls auditioning for Sanam Bewafa and not being able to work with SRK. In a career spanning over three decades, Madhoo Shah worked with some of the biggest names in show business – Mammootty, Mohanlal, Rishi Kapoor, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar, among others. However, she never got to share screen space with the Khan trifecta of Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Not many know that she was supposed to collaborate with two of them but those films didn't materialise for her. Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Madhoo reveals that she couldn't crack the auditions for one of Salman's hit films of 1991. Talking about auditioning for Sanam Bewafa, she tells us, 'My first offer opposite Salman was a film that was directed by Sawan Kumar Tuk. He had auditioned me for it. I didn't get the part but Chandni went on to do the role. Her name was Rukhsar in the film." Her film with Shah Rukh was also put in the backburner. 'With Shah Rukh also, I had an offer. But the film got shelved and we didn't get to share screen space ever. I hadn't received any film offer opposite Aamir. So, I haven't worked with any of the three Khans," she says. Madhoo was also offered the role of Shilpa Shetty Kundra in Baazigar but she turned it down as she didn't want to play a supporting role. But does she hold any regret for letting a film go that went on to become a cult classic? 'I would like to ideally and fashionably say that I don't regret any of my decisions. I've never spared a thought on that. I never sat down and whined that ki maine yeh kya kar diya! Baazigar didn't happen and that's okay. In a way, it came to me and didn't come to me," she remarks. Madhoo further adds, 'The film was meant for Shilpa and it went to her and she did it just like Roja was meant for me. It was her debut and she was just stunning in it. But the thought that Baazigar had come my way is definitely on my mind because it had great music and Shah Rukh and was a great success." Destiny plays a big role, Madhoo believes, who shares that many popular women actors had also auditioned for Roja, but the film was fated to fall into her lap. 'I never even knew there was a big auditioning process for Roja. I was doing a film called Azhagan with K Balachander sir. It so happened that in one of the schedules, he told me that Mani Ratnam wants to meet me. On a Sunday when I wasn't shooting for Azhagan, I went to meet him casually. Suhasini [Mani Ratnam's wife] was also there. He gave me a scene to read and the next thing I know, he gave the schedule to my father. But even today, I meet so many actors, some even established ones, who tell me that they had auditioned for Roja," she recalls. First Published:
