UK Vows to Hold Houthis Accountable

Khabar Agency07-03-2025
The United Kingdom has thrown its weight behind the United Nations' decision to suspend humanitarian operations in Yemen's Houthi-held Saada Governorate, citing 'grave risks' to aid workers and systemic obstruction by the Iran-backed militia.
Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a scathing condemnation of Houthi abuses during a Security Council session on Yemen, linking the group's actions to a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
Kariuki opened by applauding the Council's unified condemnation of Houthi detentions, including the tragic death of a World Food Programme (WFP) staffer in custody. 'Continued Council unity sends an unequivocal message: Release all detainees immediately and unconditionally,' he declared. The UK envoy emphasized that the UN's pause in Saada—a Houthi stronghold—is a direct response to the militia's 'relentless threats' against humanitarian personnel, who face kidnappings, bureaucratic hurdles, and violence.
The suspension compounds existing crises worsened by climate change, with Kariuki noting that 'water scarcity and food insecurity are now weaponized by conflict.' A morning press briefing by UN officials, including remarks from Ms. Ali of OCHA, echoed concerns over Houthi restrictions strangling aid to 21 million Yemenis in need.
Weapons Intercepted, Iran Accused of Fueling War
In a significant revelation, Kariuki highlighted the Yemeni Coast Guard's recent interception of a dhow smuggling advanced Iranian-made weapon components—including missile parts and drones—to Houthi-controlled Hodeida port. 'This is irrefutable proof of Tehran's destabilizing role,' he stated, condemning Iran's 'blatant violation' of the UN arms embargo under Resolution 2216.
The UK renewed calls for global enforcement of the embargo and urged the international community to bolster the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM), tasked with blocking illicit arms flows. 'UNVIM is Yemen's lifeline against smuggled weapons. It must be fully funded,' Kariuki insisted.
Maritime Security Push and Path to Peace
Amid rising Red Sea tensions, the UK announced plans to launch the Yemen Maritime Security Partnership later this year, collaborating with Yemen's government and allies to strengthen coastal defenses. The initiative aims to empower Yemen's Coast Guard to combat smuggling and piracy, critical steps toward stabilizing trade routes.
Kariuki reaffirmed the UK's commitment to a UN-led political solution, pledging unwavering support for Special Envoy Hans Grundberg's efforts. 'There is no military fix to this conflict. Only an inclusive, Yemeni-owned process can bring lasting peace,' he asserted.

Algeria advocates for 3 essential steps to empower the Palestinian right

Algeria affirmed that strengthening the two-state solution begins with granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations, calling on Tuesday in New York, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, for an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Mr. Bendjama said in a speech before the UN High-Level Conference on 'The Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution': 'We meet today to discuss this solution, and for some, this discussion may be useless, even surreal, as how can we talk about establishing a state while we witness the destruction, starvation, and burning of Gaza with our own eyes, and how can we talk about establishing a state while the West Bank is bleeding.' However, he reiterated that 'in these darkest times, we must affirm principles,' adding that 'from Algeria's history, we believe that the true and correct response to occupation is not surrender, despair, and silence, but steadfastness, determination, and persistence.' Mr. Bendjama underscored that 'the Palestinian people have a legal and natural right rooted in history, law, and justice, their right to self-determination and to establish an independent, sovereign state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.' Mr. Bendjama further reiterated Algeria's call for action, proposing three essential and clear steps, the first of which is 'the necessity of strengthening the two-state solution, which begins with granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations.' He asserted in this context that 'Algeria was the first and so far the only country to officially make this call in the Security Council last January, and it received support from the overwhelming majority of the Council members,' affirming in this regard 'Algeria's readiness to renew this call again.' The second proposal, according to Mr. Bendjama, is 'the recognition of the State of Palestine,' where he pointed out that 'Algeria, which was the first country to do so thirty-seven years ago, today calls on all nations that have not recognized the State of Palestine to join history.' As for the third step, it will be through 'empowering Palestinians on their land, rejecting displacement, protecting lands, criminalizing settlements, and ending impunity.' But before all that, Mr. Bendjama added, 'an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza must be guaranteed without restriction or condition, along with ensuring the entry of aid and feeding the children of Gaza and not allowing them to die of hunger.'

President Tebboune Urges Delivery of Food, Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamel Rezig, affirmed Tuesday from Addis Ababa, where he is participating, at the behest of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the United Nations Food Systems Follow-up Summit, Algeria's position calling for urgent international action to unconditional delivery of food and humanitarian aid to Gaza, where civilians are suffering from systematic starvation and collective deprivation of the right to food. In his speech at the second edition of the UNFSS+4 summit, the minister affirmed that Algeria 'calls from this platform for urgent and immediate international action aimed at ensuring the unconditional delivery of food and humanitarian aid to Gaza, and working diligently to put an end to this blatant violation of international law.' He added in the same context that 'talk about food justice is incomplete without addressing the ongoing tragedies, such as the systematic starvation and mass food deprivation taking place in the Gaza Strip, which is a stain on humanity.' Rezig regretted that 'more than two million people there, the majority of whom are children and women, are suffering from famine and starvation in flagrant violation of all humanitarian values and principles.' He explained that 'given this painful reality, Algeria joins its voice to that of the UN Secretary-General, who affirmed yesterday, in his opening remarks, the need not to use food as a weapon against peoples. He emphasised that food must remain a guaranteed human right, not a tool of pressure or collective punishment.' In the same context, he added that Algeria 'believes that achieving food security is a fundamental pillar of dignity and sovereignty' and that 'transforming food systems fairly and inclusively requires, above all, effective coordination between action, investment, and accountability.' In the same context, he considered that people 'need not just speeches, but commitments that are translated into action, fair investments directed towards vulnerable groups and marginalised areas, and clear mechanisms that ensure transparency and collective accountability.' In this regard, the Minister expressed 'Algeria's appreciation for the integrated efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development to build more sustainable food systems resilient to climate and geopolitical crises, especially in developing regions.' He also stressed that Algeria is 'ready to share its experiences, particularly in the field of desert agriculture, to build a more just and humane shared food future.

Houthi Militia Imposes Sectarian Slogans and Materials by Force in Taiz Schools, Abducts Resisting Teachers

The Houthi militia has launched a coercive campaign across several districts in Taiz Governorate, forcibly imposing its sectarian slogans and the ideological pamphlets of its founder, Hussein al-Houthi, into school curricula. Simultaneously, the group has carried out abduction campaigns targeting teachers, school principals, and Quran instructors who refused to comply with these directives. The campaign has affected the districts of Sharab, Damt Khadir, and Mawiyah, where school administrations were compelled to force students and teachers to chant the Houthi "Scream" slogan daily during morning assemblies. The militia requires video evidence of this practice to be submitted to its controlled education offices, alongside daily compliance reports. Additionally, the militia has mandated the compulsory teaching of sectarian pamphlets, threatening punitive measures against resisting administrators and educators. A school principal in Sharab reported that many schools received these materials and began teaching them under duress, while others faced arrest for refusal. A document issued by the Houthi-controlled Taiz Education Office reveals explicit orders enforcing the daily chanting of the sectarian slogan—with video documentation—and warns of penalties for non-compliant schools. Educational sources confirmed that months earlier, the militia forced dozens of principals and teachers to travel to Sana'a for 20-day indoctrination sessions focused on Hussein al-Houthi's ideology and concepts of "al-Wilayah" (guardianship), unrelated to actual pedagogy. Absence from these sessions is deemed "hostile" by the militia, risking dismissal or imprisonment. The Houthi "Preventive Security" apparatus oversees these measures and leads arrest campaigns. In Damt Khadir, Mawiyah, and Sharab, multiple teachers, principals, and Quran instructors have been abducted and taken to unknown locations. Sources caution that disclosing their identities could worsen their conditions in detention, despite ongoing community mediation efforts to secure their release. These violations are part of a broader Houthi security escalation in areas under their control, where over 70 individuals—mostly educators and mosque preachers—were abducted within two weeks.
