
At 74, Pak Habib still gets hearts pumping with free aerobics classes
A familiar figure to regulars at the park, Pak Habib teaches free aerobics classes from Thursday to Sunday, starting as early as 8am, drawing a loyal following from people of all ages and backgrounds.
Armed with a playlist of over 2,000 songs from various genres, he blends fitness with fun—mixing in everything from silat and Tai Chi to yoga, dangdut and zapin, to keep things lively.
"People won't get bored if we mix it up. At the same time, I also give motivational talks and fitness tips during class," said the former Telekom Malaysia technician, who also holds a Diploma in Sports Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
His workouts are light and accessible, focusing on balance, blood circulation, muscle flexibility and breathing, making them suitable for all ages.
Pak Habib's journey into aerobics began in the 1990s when a friend was searching for a male instructor.
"Back then, aerobics was usually taught by women, so I initially declined.
"But with a bit of encouragement and some sports knowledge, I gave it a shot — and here I am, still needed by the community even as age catches up," he shared.
Despite many urging him to slow down, Pak Habib remains steadfast in his belief that age should never be an excuse to stop moving.
"I may have physical limitations now, but that doesn't mean we stop. We adapt to our abilities.
"The one gift Allah has given me is that I can speak well—I give motivation, crack jokes, and bring humour. That's what makes my class vibrant," he added.
Among his regular participants is 48-year-old Suhaila Abd Talib, who has been attending his sessions for more than a decade.
"He's not just teaching aerobics. He gives motivation, shares health tips and makes it fun.
"I've learned so much from him," said the mother of two.
With humour, and a whole lot of energy, Pak Habib continues to defy age and inspire many — one dance move at a time.

MACC considers 5pct weight loss for promotions
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has agreed to consider a five per cent weight loss as a criterion for promotions. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the agency agreed to a proposal from Malaysian Obesity Society (MYOS) president Professor Dr Rohana Abdul Ghani and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) health expert Professor Dr Barakatun Nisak Mohd Yusof. Azam said the MACC was open to collaborating with UPM's Medicine and Health Sciences faculty and MYOS to implement an awareness programme on weight management. "The MACC is committed to implementing the programme to strengthen the discipline of our personnel and end obesity among civil servants. "We place great importance on the physical and mental health of our personnel," he said in a statement yesterday. Azam had earlier received a courtesy visit from Dr Barakatun, who is also the faculty's deputy dean, and Dr Rohana. It was previously reported that the MACC would implement a Body Mass Index (BMI) requirement for promotions from 2026. All personnel must have a BMI not exceeding 27 to qualify. The MACC will also hold a challenge to encourage staff to lose weight, with rewards for those who meet the set levels and criteria. More recently, the MACC held a Weight and Metabolic Management Awareness Programme where personnel underwent basic health screenings.

Only lab tests can confirm chikungunya infection

PETALING JAYA: You get bitten by a mosquito and days later, there is a sudden onset of fever, muscle pain, headache and rash. While one may assume it is a dengue infection, there is also debilitating joint pain that lasts for days. Chikungunya – a similar mosquito-borne infection – could be the reason for the discomfort in the joints throughout your body. 'Both dengue and chikungunya have almost identical symptoms such as sudden high fever, headache, rash and muscle aches. 'However, chikungunya is more often associated with severe, sometimes debilitating joint pain and swelling, which can last weeks to months. 'Dengue is more likely to cause bleeding manifestations, low platelet counts and in severe cases, shock,' said Universiti Putra Malaysia consultant clinical microbiologist Prof Dr Zamberi Sekawi. He said laboratory tests are needed for confirmation, noting that symptoms alone may not be definitive. While chikungunya is not new in Malaysia, he voiced concerns over cross-border transmission. 'Early detection is possible through clinical suspicion and rapid laboratory confirmation in travellers returning from affected areas showing fever and joint pain symptoms,' he said. Universiti Malaya virologist Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar said it is difficult to determine whether the illness is due to chikungunya or dengue infection, just based on symptoms. 'Testing is essential as dengue can be deadly. 'Chikungunya, meanwhile, can be debilitating,' he said. He also said the virus will most likely be carried by the Aedes mosquito, which is the same as dengue. Dr Sazaly said the high volume of travel and short-travel distance between Malaysia and afflicted regions like China means a viraemic person can possibly carry the virus here.
