SRC: Newport hitting top form for Ebbw Vale final

The Steelmen will start as slight favourites for Sunday's showdown (kick-off 2.30pm) courtesy of home advantage, but there was little to choose between the sides that finished in the top four of the table.
Ebbw edged out Llandovery in the first semi-final and then the Black and Ambers stunned top seeds Cardiff at the Arms Park.

It means that Morris & Co have a shot at going one better than last year when edged out by the Drovers in a top-quality Premiership final at Church Bank.
Arguably Newport haven't hit the heights of 2023/24 this season… but they have challenged that assessment with performances in the run-in.
They have won seven games since defeat at Ebbw in the SRC Cup and are averaging 36 points per game.
A winning streak was brought to a crashing end by Llandovery a year ago but Newport hope that they have built towards one last huge effort.

'The whole season is planned so that we are performing at our best at the right time,' said head coach Morris, who is determined to add a league title to the Premiership Cup won at Principality Stadium in 2022.
'We want to be firing on all cylinders and I think we have that right this year because we are seven games undefeated, we are scoring some great tries and playing some excellent rugby.
'There are a number of players who are playing their best rugby of the season and that is down to the planning.
'We have made sure the squad is rotated, everybody has had a chance to compete for a start and eventually the cream rises to the top for this final.'
Ebbw's excellent campaign means they head into Sunday's derby with a perfect Eugene Cross Park record of played 13, won 13.
Two of those successes were against Newport but Morris, like opposite number Jason Strange, doesn't read too much into past games.

'We won comfortably at home in dry conditions but lost at Ebbw Vale in the wet and the dry,' he said.
'You can look back at those games to try and find a couple of themes but this is a cup final. Ebbw Vale will bring something new and so will we for what will be a hell of an arm wrestle.
'They are undefeated at home and that will give them another five per cent to their game but it takes a big effort to beat them whatever the ground.
'The dry conditions suit us but there's more to their game than just a set piece. We have to deliver what we can, and control what we can control.
'We finished runners-up last year so really wanted to achieve a final again, so fingers crossed we can be more than the bridesmaid this year.
'It'll be a noisy day and a great atmosphere, Ebbw Vale have a big following and I am sure our supporters will turn up in their numbers.'
Newport have also profited from the experience of last year's final, plus the build-up to three Principality Stadium cup clashes since 2018.
'The players are controlling this now,' said Morris. 'It would be quite easy to do an extra session or really go hard at them but they know everything about policies, our attack, our defence.
'There is a bit more detail around Ebbw Vale this week but not around intensity, it's making sure there is a clear understanding of things.
'We had an easy session and walk through on Tuesday, then got to Tiny Rebel for some food and a sparkling water. The hard work has been done all year and the guys are raring to go for Sunday.'

Celtic eye 'bargain transfer for 16 goal Sweden star' but face three way tussle

Nygren has netted twice in his first three senior caps for his country Celtic are reportedly keen on a summer transfer for Nordsjaelland playmaker Benjamin Nygren. Brendan Rodgers is already off the mark in the window after Kieran Tierney 's sensational Parkhead return from Arsenal on a free transfer was confirmed while young Fulham striker Callum Osmand is having a medical ahead of a move north of the border. ‌ And SunSport now claim that Sweden international Nygren is also on the Irishman's radar. ‌ The 23-year-old joined Danish side Nordsjaelland from Genk back in 2022 and registered 16 goals and four assists last season to earn a place in the Superliga Team of the Year. The former IFK Goteborg player made his senior international bow earlier this year and took his tally to two goals from his first three caps with a strike in an impressive 2-0 win against Hungary last week. But with the wide man revealing he won't renew his current contract - which runs out at the end of December - his club may look to cash in on their star in order to avoid losing him for nothing in January. While the Hoops are said to be keeping close tabs on the player, the report also adds that they will face stiff competition from Anderlecht and Copenhagen. Attacking reinforcements will be high on Celtic 's transfer wish list this summer. The Hoops have been linked with a move for Telstar frontman Youssef El Kachati who is out of contract next month. ‌ But the Dutchman looks to have performed a last-minute U-turn by suggesting he will extend his stay with Telstar after helping them win promotion to the Eredivisie. Record Sport has revealed that the Premiership champions retain an interest in Motherwell sensation Lennon Miller, who is also wanted by clubs right across Europe. Reports elsewhere claim that Celtic are also still keen on Sarpsborg winger Sondre Ørjasæter, who was a target back in January. Ben Curry happy to throw himself into England duty after Sale disappointment

The Sale captain linked up with Steve Borthwick's squad just three days after his club were denied a place in Saturday's Premiership final by an agonising 21-16 semi-final loss to Leicester. Flanker Curry is among the senior figures in a 37-man training camp, containing 16 uncapped players, ahead of upcoming Tests against Argentina and the United States. Head coach Borthwick is currently without players from Premiership finalists Bath and Leicester in addition to a host of star names, including Curry's twin brother Ben, who are involved in the Lions' summer tour of Australia. While in an ideal world he would have been in different surroundings this week, Curry is not contemplating what might have been. 'It's very easy to do the opposite of that,' he said. 'There's always something different to go after. Obviously you've got to address the emotional disappointment but, with professional sport, there's always something thrown at you next. 'Essentially, you can't rest, it's about just cracking on to the next thing. The challenge we've got this tour is properly exciting. 'I think it's a perfect position. Obviously very disappointed after that semi-final but the beauty of rugby is there is always something next and we're quite fortunate it's straight away. 'In five weeks I might address those emotions, but right now it's quite nice to just throw yourself into something different.' Curry impressed during a Guinness Six Nations campaign which brought four wins from five for England and a second-placed finish behind champions France. Yet the 26-year-old was subsequently left out of the Lions squad revealed by head coach Andy Farrell in May. 'I haven't had anything, so for me, I just want to play for England,' said Curry when asked if he retained hope of a late Lions call-up. Training squad announcement 📋 Steve Borthwick has named a 36-player squad for a four-day training camp ahead of the upcoming match between an England XV and a France XV at @allianz_stad on Saturday 21 June.@O2 | #WearTheRose — England Rugby (@EnglandRugby) June 10, 2025 'I've literally had nothing, so I wouldn't have a clue.' England front-row pair Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour were this week added to Farrell's group as injury cover, with Ireland prop Finlay Bealham taking the place of stricken Scotland tighthead Zander Fagerson. Speaking of the opportunity for 20-year-old Sale team-mate Opoku-Fordjour, Curry said: 'He's still very young. He's got so much potential to grow. 'For him to be around the best players in the world, I think could do wonders for him. 'His ceiling is so high, it's unbelievable. Even to have a sniff of that, he's going to come back and he's just going to go from strength to strength. I've got full confidence in that.' Meanwhile, Henry Arundell has been drafted straight back into the England setup after finishing his spell with Racing 92. The former London Irish wing, who has agreed a return to the Premiership with Bath for next season, was unavailable for international selection during his time in France. Arundell scored a try on his Test debut against Australia in 2022 and registered five scores during England's pool-stage victory over Chile at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Asked for his initial impressions of the 22-year-old, Curry said: 'Very quick. He's unbelievable, isn't he? We're definitely blessed to have him back.'
