Bethenny Frankel shares 4 tips she swears by to stay fit and youthful at 54

This summer, Bethenny Frankel's abs went viral.
At 54, the 'Real Housewife' turned-business mogul walked the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Show, and her toned midriff galvanized the internet.
Frankel told Business Insider she has been inundated with questions about her secrets for aging gracefully with a busy, travel-intensive schedule.
"They want to know how I live, how I eat, how I pack, what I do," she said.
Frankel said she doesn't follow a strict routine. She tries to walk regularly, manage stress proactively, and doesn't overthink her diet.
Still, she understands the fear of getting older, and the desire to feel confident and healthy in your 50s.
"I think people were moved by the Sports Illustrated Walk because they were saying, 'oh wait, I am not done. I have so much time. I could have a glow up in five years, in 10 years, in 20 years,'" Frankel said.
If you are looking to give your lifestyle a tune-up, here are her top tips.
Keep your fitness routine simple
Frankel become a major player in business, turning her Skinnygirl brand into a multimillion dollar company and investing in various other companies — a golden touch known as the "Bethenny Effect."
Still, she said she's not the type to follow a set schedule.
"There is no typical day. A morning routine? I'm not that kind of person."
One thing she will always fit in, though, is a walk.
"I just try to get in steps, but certainly not every day."
Walking is a great for longevity, since it keeps your heart strong and promotes good balance and stability, according to cardiologists and healthy aging doctors.
While lifting weights is good for healthy aging too, the best exercise is one you'll do consistently, personal trainers say.
If she's learned anything over the years, Frankel said, it's that you don't need to overcomplicate your workout routine to stay healthy as you age,

Frankel said she takes a daily "pile of vitamins" and powders including:
NAD+ — a trendy molecule being researched for energy and healthy aging in an IV and pill form.
Collagen — a type of protein that supports healthy skin, hair, and joints.

Carbs are good, actually
Frankel has long been famous for her "supermodel snacks," low-calorie bites that combine protein sources like turkey slices with mustard and bagel seasoning.
Despite loving cottage cheese — which is protein-packed — Frankel said the high-protein trend is over-rated.
"People are fixated and obsessed with so much protein. I think protein is good, just like I think carbs are good, fiber is good," she said.
Instead, she tries to get creative in reaching for flavors she's craving, while being mindful of portion sizes.
Make time for yourself
Frankel said one of the major reasons for her continued success in both health and business is a proactive approach to burnout.
She has a packed schedule, and finding balance is what has allowed her to keep up with a steady stream of obligations.
Frankel said she still has stressful days, but she's learned to set aside plenty of time after to recover. That means being diligent about really resting, taking a full day to do nothing — not a 15-minute interview, not a quick meeting, not anything work-related, no matter how small, so she can fully unwind.
"I don't run the car into the ground," Frankel said, preparing to take a long, relaxing walk in the sunshine after wrapping up her interview with BI. "You need to have a discipline about saying no."

Cindy Crawford, 59, says she starts her mornings offline. During an appearance on the "Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky" podcast, the supermodel spoke about her morning ritual and how it sets the tone for her day. Crawford told podcast host Monica Lewinsky that she gets up 20 minutes before her kids so she has time for herself in the mornings. "I didn't want to wake up to 'Mommy, I need this,'" Crawford said, adding that she had to take care of herself first so she has "a better chance" of being her best self for the day. In recent years, Crawford says she's made it a habit to avoid checking emails or messages first thing in the morning. "I probably heard it on a podcast, but it was like 'Think about it. What is the first input you want?'" Crawford said. "I listen to a Bible podcast or whatever. Every morning, they read a Bible verse, and then someone does a summary of it. That's my first input while I'm doing my dry brushing and I'm putting body oil on. I don't look at my messages or emails until I've taken that time for myself," she said. Dry brushing is a beauty technique that involves using a dry brush to exfoliate the skin. It is said to also encourage blood circulation. But even spending those 20 minutes offline can be a challenge, since she has to turn on her phone to access her Bible app and inevitably sees messages come in. "I'm controlling the first input because what if someone has sent you a stressful text or email, and that's the first thing you wake up to?" Crawford said. "And now you're in response mode, or like, adrenaline gets going, because someone said the wrong word in a text that you took the wrong way. I just don't want that. I want to control my input for as long as I can." In addition to avoiding messages, Crawford says she likes to spend time outside in the mornings. "We live in Malibu. I'll go to the jacuzzi. I'm outside, I'm in nature, my feet are in the grass. I have this connection to nature, to source. All of that helps ground me," she said. "By the time I come in from that, I'm like, "OK, I can I can do whatever," she added. A representative for Crawford did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours. Other high-profile individuals, such as Hollywood celebrities and business leaders, also have their own morning rituals. Keke Palmer told BI in May that she usually gets up between 6 a.m. and 6.45 a.m. and practices Pilates in the morning. "It's the moment of my day that I get to myself, even if I'm in a class with other people. It's just me, feeling it, existing in the world, and doing something for myself. It's really meditative," Palmer said. Disney's CEO, Bob Iger, said he gets up at 4:15 a.m. and avoids looking at his phone until after his morning workout because it helps him clear his head. "I think it's vital, in terms of the ability to run a pretty complicated company in a very, very fast-paced world, to have the energy but also to have spent the time to organize one's thoughts," he said.

When Matthew Straight and April Pasilang lived in Cebu City, the oldest city in the Philippines, the constant hum of traffic made it hard to slow down. "We didn't really ever get to open a window. It was always closed," Straight, 46, told Business Insider. Straight, who grew up in New Zealand, met Pasilang, now 44, in the Philippines in 2016 while working in the fitness industry. In July 2024, he moved from his base in Australia to Cebu City to be closer to her. The bustle of city life got old fast. Straight had always thought about living off-grid in the countryside, but he didn't think Pasilang would be interested. "When he mentioned it, it was like, oh my God, I wanted that too," Pasilang, a yoga instructor, told BI. She grew up on the outskirts of Cebu City, where space was plentiful and her family grew their own crops, and she longed for that kind of simplicity again. They didn't plan to leave Cebu City, but a two-night trip to Bohol, an island about two hours by ferry, changed everything. They stumbled upon a piece of land they liked in a small town called Corella. Although it was only about a 15-minute drive from a large market and mall, the area was quiet, with few neighbors, and just a short drive to the beach. They bought it on a whim. "I thought it would happen maybe in five years or something. It never crossed my mind that it would happen so quickly," Pasilang said. Building an off-grid home The couple paid 1.3 million Philippine pesos, or about $23,000, for the plot of land, which measures about 15,500 square feet. In October, they broke ground on the construction of their off-grid home. Straight drew a simple floor plan, and the couple worked with local architects and builders to design their new place. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom main residence was designed with an open plan layout to maximize natural light and airflow. Steps away, a separate one-bedroom guest house offers a comfortable stay for visiting family and friends. Outside, there's a pool, a vegetable garden, and a pond — plenty of space for the couple to grow their own food and unwind. Hoping to be as self-sustainable as possible, the couple outfitted the house with rainwater storage tanks and a solar panel system. "We don't want to be at the whim of global supply chain issues," Straight said. They spent 4.84 million Philippine pesos on building the property, which included the costs of their appliances, furniture, fencing, drainage, and their solar energy system. They moved in in April. "Now we're getting the veggie gardens going," Straight said. "We just picked some eggplants, okra, and chilies in the morning." The couple also has plans to buy some chickens and raise tilapia fish in their pond for their own consumption. They've grown close to several neighbors, often stopping by with extra produce from their garden or homemade treats, like Pasilang's banana bread. Among the familiar faces is a 75-year-old woman who runs a small convenience store where kids from the nearby elementary school stop by to buy snacks. "Then there's another neighbor who's 83 and fit as a fiddle. He walks around carrying big bottles of water, and he's ripped," Straight said. The sense of community is unlike what they experienced in Cebu City, or even in Australia, where Straight lived for more than 10 years. "Everyone looks out for each other here. They're just so kind and thoughtful and generous, even if they don't have much," he said. "And you reciprocate that." Their friends from Cebu drop by regularly, and the couple says they've also connected with new people through their homestead-focused YouTube channel — a hobby they picked up when they started building their home. Living with intention Moving away from the city has allowed the couple to live at their own pace. "We wake up, open the sliding doors, put a pot of coffee on, and take a look at the garden. We just decide what to do based on what needs to be done in the garden, like filling up the garden beds," Pasilang said. In the afternoons, Straight does online nutrition consulting work, and once he's finished, the couple brainstorms ideas for their YouTube channel. They're no longer rushing from place to place, worrying about their to-do lists. "Everything was always go, go, go and structured, because you really have to time it due to the traffic," Straight said. It's all in line with their goal to slow down and lead a more purposeful life, especially for Straight. Back in Australia, Straight juggled multiple jobs: managing a gym, running a taco business, and overseeing a café. He also owned several rental properties. Losing his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2017 shifted his outlook. Straight traveled back and forth between Australia and New Zealand to spend time with her while she was sick. "I thought, gosh, I'm having to leave her to go back to a job — where I'm just exchanging time for money, which will come and go — instead of spending time with my mom," he said. The experience made him realize that he wanted control over his time. After reassessing his priorities, Straight saw that he could live with less and be happier for it. When he moved to the Philippines, he only had three boxes and two suitcases. "It was actually quite therapeutic, getting rid of all my stuff and then coming to the Philippines and buying things intentionally — quality stuff that's not going to just be thrown away in a year's time," Straight said. They haven't found any downsides to their new life yet. "We have everything we had in Cebu but with a much easier, slower-paced life," he added. Apart from being less attached to material things, the couple says their lifestyle change has improved their mental health. "When you get a text message or you're checking social media, you get that dopamine reaction in your brain," Straight said. "But now, we get the same thing by going out to the garden and seeing that the okra has grown an inch in a day."
