Joan Rivers convinced me to pursue stand-up two weeks before she died, comedian Cally Beaton reveals on new Mail podcast
Legendary performer Joan Rivers told me to abandon my life as a TV executive and pursue stand-up two weeks before she died, comedian Cally Beaton reveals on a new Mail podcast. In conversation with Mail columnist Bryony Gordon, Beaton, 56, said she credits Rivers with inspiring her 'midlife reinvention', giving her the confidence to do her first ever stand-up gig. Before her comedy career, Beaton, as a single mother, climbed the television industry ladder to senior vice president at Viacom, where she helped develop major shows like South Park and SpongeBob SquarePants. Her new book, Namaste Motherf*ckers, follows her journey from corporate executive to comedian and offers guidance to women experiencing midlife burnout and other mental health issues. 'I was lucky enough to meet some amazing people during my career', Beaton told the podcast. 'We would go to Cannes and host industry events – Hollywood A-listers who were fronting new shows would come and get drunk, hoping for jaded executives to invest in them. 'It was at one of these events I met Joan Rivers – I ended up working with her on a few occasions and go to know her well. 'I never really thought of Joan as a typical feminist before meeting her. But of course, she was bursting through the glass ceilings of Hollywood when women weren't doing what she was doing. 'I owe her a lot – it was Joan who said to me, a couple of weeks before she died that I should try stand-up.' Beaton explained that Rivers had spotted her comedic potential during speeches she gave at industry events. When Beaton expressed doubts about being too old to make such a career pivot, the veteran performer offered some wisdom on why it's never too late to pursue what makes you happy. Rivers died in September 2014 from complications following a routine endoscopy procedure. Beaton said: 'I was 45, and I told Joan it was too late for me to go into comedy. One of my kids has special needs, and I needed a day job. 'She just looked at me and said: I am 81; at 45, you're still in the thick of it. I think you should try stand-up. She died two weeks after that conversation. 'When I heard the news, I decided to do my first ever drunken, hopeless open mic thing. That's where you start, you need to put in those hours to get good. 'Any 81-year-old who's still at the top of their game, telling a 45-year-old you've got it all ahead of you, that was a massive gift. 'Now at 56, I am very proud of my age. I wear it with pride – it's better than the alternative. 'I am aware that in 10 years' time, I will think God, you were so young. We're never going to be younger than we are right now.' Since launching her comedy career, Beaton has appeared on major comedy shows including QI, Live at The Apollo and The Apprentice: You're Fired. She has created three solo shows for the Edinburgh Fringe, with her 2019 routine Invisible making it onto best jokes of the year lists. Jewish comedian Rachel Creeger says she has new venue for Edinburgh Fringe show
Why you can trust Sky News A Jewish comedian who says her original comedy slot at Edinburgh Fringe was cancelled by the venue has told Sky News she will now be able to perform at the event after being offered new locations. Rachel Creeger: Ultimate Jewish Mother will take place across two different venues in the city - The Big Tent at Hoots @ Nicolson Square Gardens, and Dirty Martini at Le Monde. Last month, Creeger said her original venue, Whistle Binkies, called her and fellow Jewish comedian Philip Simon to cancel their slots. In a new statement announcing the move, she said it would be "a few days before the street marketing" in Edinburgh "can be amended or new flyers arrive so please do spread the word and let people know of the new time and location". She also thanked the new venues for allowing the show to retain "unticketed status", which allows "those who cannot afford to pay to see the show for free, and those who are able to pay to donate what they can afford". The comedian added: "I would also like to extend my thanks and appreciation to everyone who has reached out over the past couple of weeks with support and offers of help. You have kept my heart warm through an otherwise dark and cold time." As Britain's only touring comedian who is also a practising Orthodox Jew, Creeger says she and other Jewish comedians have experienced a significant increase in antisemitism while performing over the past two years. She says her show is in no way political. "We're not the people making the trouble," she told Sky News last week. "I've never caused harm anywhere; my show doesn't do that, my show is lovely." Creeger said she was given three reasons for her original slot being cancelled: concerns raised by staff to the venue about safety, graffiti following previous performances, and a "vigil for IDF soldiers" she says the venue initially claimed had been held during her performance last year. She said the venue later had to admit this vigil had not taken place and that she did not see evidence of graffiti herself last year. "We're not the ones writing it... but if it was bothering them and they worried it was bothering us, then maybe we'd have volunteered to help them - or to help clean it," she said. Responding to the apparent safety concerns, she said: "It's a pub in Edinburgh, it's a music venue, they themselves have bouncers most evenings... And perhaps they might say if there's a concern about extra risk, we should do all we can to make our performers safe." The Fringe Society, which organises the comedy festival, has said its role is to provide support and advice to all participants "with a vision to give anyone a stage and everyone a seat". A spokesperson explained they do not manage or programme venues and "we understand that the show cancellations have been a choice made by the venue".

Orlando Bloom enjoys wholesome beach break with daughter Daisy after bizarre rumor he's romancing world leader amid Katy Perry split
Orlando Bloom shared a glimpse into his wholesome beach break with daughter Daisy on Instagram on Monday after bizarre rumor he's romancing a world leader. The actor, 48, looked happy as he spent quality time with his four-year-old little girl, who he shares with ex-fiancée Katy Perry, who he split from in June this year after nine years together. The Lord of the Rings star looked ever the doting dad as he carried Daisy into the ocean to go swimming. In another picture, the father and daughter duo were joined by a male friend and a young boy as they soaked up the sun on a patio overlooking the ocean before heading to the beach with a bucket and spade. Orlando, who was dressed in a black jumper and shorts, beamed as he tickled his little girl as she sat on his knee. Taking in the picturesque sunset, Orlando captured Daisy running along the beach flying a large kite. Elsewhere in the gallery of photos, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor sat in a blue car with his adorable pet pooch before taking in the sites on a bike ride. He wrote: 'some fun being had [sun emoji]' It comes after Orlando reacted to a bizarre claim that he is romancing a world leader just days after his ex Katy sparked up romance rumors with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Last week, Katy was seen enjoying a dinner date with Justin in Montreal amid her Lifetimes Tour. And sources have since stated that the pair had an 'instant connection' and are 'interested in each other.' On Friday, the satirical news site The Onion poked fun at the romance speculation by sharing a seemingly AI photo on Instagram of her ex Orlando on a date with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He appeared to understand the reference and playfully jumped to the comment section to add clapping hand emojis. The caption of the post read: 'Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. '"Angela kept Orlando laughing all night - he couldn't keep his eyes off her!" said an insider source who spotted the pair sipping wine, slurping oysters, and splitting a decadent piece of chocolate layer cake at a Michelin-starred restaurant.' In the seemingly AI-generated image, the Hollywood star and Angela could be seen sitting at a candlelit table inside a fancy eatery. The original photo showed Justin at a restaurant with Angela as well as Christoph Heusgen in Berlin in 2016. Last week, Katy and Justin were seen enjoying dinner at Le Violon in Montreal amidst the Canadian leg of her Lifetime Tour. In video obtained by the pair took part in a lighthearted conversation as they sat across from each other as they dined at the eatery. At one point, the mom-of-one held a small smile on her face as she listened to what Justin was saying. Two days later, the former Canadian Prime Minister - who announced his resignation earlier this year in January - was also spotted at her Montreal concert on Wednesday at the Bell Centre. It comes two years after his split from ex-wife Sophie Gregoire in August 2023. The former couple are also parents to three children. Katy and Orlando's separation came to light in June following their engagement in 2019 and birth of their daughter the following year. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Onion (@theonion) The caption of the post read: 'Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel' A source told People in an article published on Saturday that the pair 'are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes. 'She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.' Aside from both having a passion for music, the insider added that they 'are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.' While Katy and Justin are juggling their 'own personal responsibilities,' a long-distance relationship could be a possibility for the two. A separate source also told the outlet that Justin 'is a [politician] who is used to living a secret life with his personal activity, and wouldn't put on a public display at this stage. 'He knows they were being watched and is smart enough to play it low-key for now. [The] timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages.' However, another source recently told that the pair's dinner outing was simply 'a get together.' 'She hasn't told anyone it was anything more, and she usually wears her heart on her sleeve, so if something were happening, she'd let her close friends know. But right now it is nothing more than friendship.' Two days later, the former Canadian Prime Minister - who announced his resignation earlier this year in January - was also spotted at her Montreal concert on Wednesday at the Bell Centre; seen in April in Mexico City Following her split from Orlando, the singer 'isn't ready to start dating anyone right now' and is instead focusing on 'healing' from the separation. 'Could that change? Obviously, but the ball is in Katy's court right now. No relationship so far.' Another insider stated that Katy and Justin first met at an event and that their dinner date this week was only 'a hangout.' 'They met at an event and they have had some good conversations. They text each other, it seems to be very friendly and nothing more at the moment. 'It could develop, of course, but it's not anything more than two single people who had dinner together and like to talk.' The source further explained that Katy 'literally just became single five minutes ago and they haven't even separated all of their stuff yet. She's not going to fall in love with someone new so quickly.' In late June, it was revealed that Katy and Orlando officially called it quits after dating for nine years. At the time, a source told Us Weekly: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,' while also adding that the separation has been 'not contentious' thus far. 'Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The Teenage Dream hitmaker was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 until their divorce in 2012. The insider further added that the reported breakup had been 'a long time coming' and that their relationship had also been 'tense for months.' And representatives for the two stars also confirmed to 'Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. 'They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is - and always will be - raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.' In the wake of the separation, Orlando also flew to Venice to attend the star-studded nuptials between Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez. The actor was spotted mingling with a number of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and Sydney Sweeney. The former couple reunited last month in July for a mini reunion in Italy amidst a break in her Lifetimes Tour. The pair were seen spending time along the Amalfi Coast - and were also accompanied by daughter Daisy, four. Orlando is also father to teenage son Flynn, 14 - whom he shares with ex-wife Miranda Kerr. During the trip, Orlando jumped to his Instagram page to share photos that had captured memorable moments. One image was taken as he joined Katy for a relaxing boat ride at sunset with their daughter Daisy and his son Flynn. Afterwards, the singer resumed her concerts - and had an emotional moment during her L.A. stop. She seemingly referenced to her recent separation from the actor before singing the heartbreak track Not Like the Movies which had been requested by fans.
