PETALING JAYA: In an update by the Hong Kong Security Bureau to a lawmaker last December, Hong Kong recorded 169 in-flight thefts in the first 10 months of 2024, involving valuables worth HK$4.32mil (RM2.34mil) – a 75% rise compared with the same period in 2023.
In Singapore, CNA reported in January that four people were charged with in-flight theft between January 2023 and September 2024.
Thefts can be attempted even on short flights, with a Chinese national arrested by Singapore authorities for stealing a credit card and more than RM658 in cash during a night flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore in March.
According to Selangor police, which is in charge of crimes committed on flights landing at KLIA, 267 police reports were lodged over missing items on flights at KLIA since 2022, with 146 of them reported in 2024.
However, only 26 investigation papers were opened because some victims were unsure when their items went missing, while others had continued with their journey to their respective destinations.

Entertainment centre offering GROs at RM300 hourly raided, 37 foreigners arrested
BUTTERWORTH: Operating on the seventh floor of a building in Jalan Bagan Luar, an entertainment centre allegedly offered what was advertised as an "exclusive package" where customers paid up to RM300 per hour to select guest relation officers (GROs) based on their body numbers. The centre's operations were uncovered during a raid by the Immigration Department early this morning, which led to the arrest of 37 foreigners, 35 of whom were suspected of working as GROs. Immigration Department Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said the 1am raid encountered obstacles when the premises' management detected the presence of the operation team and locked all entry points, including lifts and stairwell doors. He said the raiding party had to break through several metal doors to gain access. "After gaining entry, we inspected 110 people and detained 37 foreigners, aged between 23 and 45, including 35, believed to be working as GROs. "They included 19 Vietnamese women, 14 Thai women, two Chinese men and one woman each from China and Laos," he told reporters at the raid site. Basri said that during the inspection of karaoke rooms, several women were found hiding in secret compartments, such as behind sofas, inside speaker boxes and in toilets. "Our checks found that all the detained women were wearing body numbers, and it is believed that customers would select them based on these numbers. "They were paid between RM250 and RM300 per hour, and the money was placed in envelopes marked with the corresponding body numbers, believed to be payment for their services," he added. The entertainment centre is believed to have been operating for about a year and was popular among both local and foreign customers. Basri said most of those detained were found to have violated Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, while several others had overstayed their visas. All detainees were taken to the Seberang Jaya Immigration Office for further investigation before being placed at the Jawi Immigration Depot.

Sudan army destroys Emirati aircraft, kills 40 mercenaries in Darfur
PORT SUDAN: Sudan's army-aligned state TV reported that the air force destroyed an Emirati aircraft transporting Colombian mercenaries at Nyala airport in Darfur, killing at least 40 people. A military source confirmed to AFP that the UAE plane was 'bombed and completely destroyed' upon landing at the paramilitary-controlled airport. No immediate response was issued by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) or the United Arab Emirates regarding the incident. State TV claimed the aircraft originated from a Gulf airbase, carrying foreign fighters and military supplies intended for the RSF, which dominates Darfur. Sudan's army, under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has repeatedly accused the UAE of supplying drones and advanced weapons to the RSF through Nyala airport. The UAE denies these allegations despite corroborating reports from UN experts, US officials, and international bodies. Satellite imagery from Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab revealed Chinese-made drones stationed at Nyala airport. In June, witnesses reported another cargo plane being bombed shortly after landing at the same location. Sudan's government recently alleged UAE involvement in recruiting Colombian mercenaries for the RSF, citing documented evidence. UN experts have verified the presence of Colombian fighters in Darfur since late 2024. Pro-army coalition Joint Forces reported over 80 Colombian mercenaries aiding the RSF in El-Fasher, Darfur's last army-held capital. Several were allegedly killed in recent RSF offensives involving drone and artillery strikes. The army released footage purportedly showing Colombian mercenaries, though AFP could not independently verify the videos. Colombia's foreign ministry previously acknowledged its citizens' involvement in Sudan's conflict, expressing regret. Colombian mercenaries, often ex-military or former guerrillas, have been deployed in Yemen and Gulf conflicts under UAE contracts. Sudan's three-year war has resulted in tens of thousands dead, 13 million displaced, and severe famine conditions. - AFP

Police: Attack on witness in Lim Guan Eng's trial a ‘clear-cut robbery,' not intimidation
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — The attack on a witness in Lim Guan Eng's corruption trial was a 'clear-cut' robbery, police said today. Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar also rejected suggestions that the incident was a case of witness intimidation, the New Straits Times reported. 'It is a clear-cut robbery. No witness tampering involved. The robbers fled with valuables into a secondary jungle nearby,' he was quoted saying. Earlier today, the witness was allegedly assaulted by 10 men at his home near Petaling Jaya, sustaining injuries to his face and hand. The attackers reportedly tied up two security guards and warned the victim to 'stay at home and not become a hero.' The lead prosecutor in Lim's trial, Datuk Wan Shahruddin Wan Ladin, said the matter would be raised in court when the ex-minister's trial resumes on Aug 19. Lim, the DAP adviser, is facing multiple charges related to the Penang Undersea Tunnel project, including soliciting a 10 per cent share of profits, receiving RM3.3 million, and involvement in the disposal of two state land plots.
