'No expectations': How Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir reacted after Shubman Gill was named India captain for England Tests
The old generation is starting to fade, and the new era is beginning to take over. Indian cricket is all about transitioning at this stage, with the BCCI setting the example by naming Shubman Gill as India's Test captain, starting with the five-Test series against England. Given Jasprit Bumrah's fragile body and Rohit Sharma's retirement, the board knew it needed to groom someone to usher Indian cricket into the next World Test Championship, finally handing over the baton to young Gill. Despite his Test record, which, if truth be told, promises a lot to be desired, Gill has been backed to become the leader of a young Team Indian, and at the same time, take his batting several notches higher. Gill was appointed India's 37th Test captain on May 24, the day India's 18-member squad for the England tour was announced. Ever since, he has attended a press conference with head coach Gautam Gambhir and has been seen giving several pep talks, albeit short, to his new team. Gill has answered questions about how he would approach his new role ahead of the team's departure to the UK, but has, for the first time, provided a proper insight into its nuances. Also Read: AB de Villiers hints Virat Kohli ghosted him after last year's 'pregnancy' blunder Gill revealed that while this indeed is a big post to handle, there are no expectations from the BCCI, the head coach, or the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar himself. In a positive way, though. The 25-year-old India batter doesn't boast a glorifying captaincy record by any stretch of the imagination. During the IPL 2025, Gill led Gujarat Titans to the Playoffs, but barring that, his leadership in the Ranji Trophy has mostly gone untested. Also Read: Shubman Gill starts India captaincy journey with sparkling knock, KL Rahul hits fifty in India vs India A match "The expectations… I've had this conversation numerous times with Gauti bhai and Ajit bhai. They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader. That's what they've told me 'there are no expectations'. They are not expecting me to do something I am not capable of. In terms of that, I don't think that there are any expectations or pressure from them but you definitely have some kind of expectations from yourself as a leader and a player. So those are the expectations that I have from myself but not from them," Gill told former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik in a candid chat for Sky Sports. With no Rohit, Virat Kohli or Ravichandran Ashwin, Gill knows that a huge mountain lies ahead. India are yet to win a Test series in England since 2007, but even if that trivia is to be ignored to lessen the pressure, Gill will be leading a bunch of seniors including Bumrah, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and hence, to ensure this new, exciting chapter of his career kicks off smoothly, his vision is clear. "Apart from all the silverware and trophies aside, I would ideally like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy. I know it can be a very difficult environment, especially with all the competition or the number of matches that we play and different squads coming in, but if I am able to do that, that would be my goal," added Gill. And he has a point. There are at least three, if not more, solid contenders for every spot in the Indian Playing XI, especially in the batting department. During their time, Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma were able to successfully ace this practice, making communication clear with players they wanted or didn't. And hence, it may not be a bad idea for the Gill and Gambhir pair to take up the same approach to deliver long-term results.

IND vs ENG: Ravichandran Ashwin pushes for Kuldeep Yadav to start in England series
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the Indian team to consider playing left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav throughout the upcoming Test series against England, which begins on June suggestion comes as a surprise, given that Indian teams have traditionally avoided fielding more than one specialist spinner in English conditions. Typically, the combination has leaned toward three to four fast bowlers supported by a lone spinner, due to pitches that tend to favor seam and however, argued that India needs its best bowling attack to win matches - and in his view, Kuldeep is a guaranteed starter. "When batsmen come through, the best bowling attack will win you matches. If they don't leave moisture on the pitch, then I think Kuldeep Yadav would be a certainty. And if there is moisture on the pitch, then Kuldeep should still be there," Ashwin said in an interview with India's previous tour of England in 2021, the team played only one spinner, Ravindra Jadeja, while Ashwin himself was left out despite his experience. This time, a more flexible team combination could be on the cards - with Jadeja likely to bat higher up the order and the presence of all-rounders like Nitish Reddy or Shardul Thakur potentially freeing up a spot for has been a consistent wicket-taker despite limited opportunities in Tests. Remarkably, the only time he went wicketless in a Test was at Lord's in 2018 - also against was upbeat about India's current bowling unit and their chances in English conditions. He believes they are capable of succeeding anywhere."Jasprit Bumrah should be No. 1, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who offers control and can bat in the top five or six. This bowling attack can dismiss any batting lineup in any conditions. Not to forget [Mohammed] Siraj, who is like a warhorse."India's preparations are already underway, with the first day of the intra-squad game completed. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill impressed with fifties, while Shardul Thakur had a decent outing with the ball.A key decision now awaits Gill - leading the Test side for the first time - as he and the team management weigh their bowling options ahead of the Watch

Alcohol industry asks Maharashtra govt to rethink excise duty hike, calls for deliberations
Expressing concern over the increase in the excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by up to 50 per cent by the Maharashtra government, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), the apex body of the Indian Alcoholic Beverage Industry, has urged the state government to reconsider the hike and hold deliberations with all stakeholders immediately. Sources in the excise department said the industry body was trying to protect its interest, but declined to comment on any possibility of a rollback. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a hike in excise duty on IMFL, country liquor, and imported alcohol. The decision is expected to raise the state's annual excise collection by approximately Rs 14,000 crore as the prices of IMFL and premium foreign liquor brands are likely to increase by 50-80 per cent. The CIABC claimed that while the intent behind the proposed hike may be to enhance revenue collections by Rs 14,000 crore, the actual outcome may be contrary–driven by declining sales, rising illicit trade, and border leakages. The long-term impact could be deeply detrimental, not only for industry and employment, but also for public safety and overall state revenues. Stating that the CIABC had already written to the Maharashtra government urging it to start a consultative process with all stakeholders before releasing any final gazette notification, Anant S Iyer, Director-General, CIABC, said the hike in excise duty was projected to push maximum retail prices up by as much as 85 per cent, a step that could severely disrupt the market, erode the competitiveness of national brands, and jeopardise the availability of legitimate alcoholic beverages in the state. 'Such an unprecedented escalation in duties poses a serious deterrence to consumer access of established and reputed brands, compelling a shift toward lower-category products. This poses a serious threat to the stability of the IMFL industry in the state…such a move will have a far-reaching adverse impact,' Iyer said. He warned that higher MRPs often create a vacuum filled by illegal operators. The IMFL industry contributes approximately 60 per cent of the total excise revenue of the state.
