2025 Texans offseason roster profile: QB Davis Mills

USA Today18-02-2025
The Houston Texans are officially in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Over the next few weeks, Texans Wire will break down each player on the roster who is signed through the 2025 season and their potential moving forward.
We will recap their 2024 season, their contract status and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.
Let's round out the quarterback room by breaking down Davis Mills.
2024 Davis Mills season
Mills did exactly what was asked of him as the No. 2 in 2024. The former third-round pick pushed Stroud in practice and came in games that were either blowouts or whenever Stroud needed to seek medical help.
His playing time was limited, but that's usually a good sign for a backup quarterback. Mills might not have played much, but be was an essential part of the Texans' success en route to a postseason run.
2024 Davis Mills stats
Mills saw action in five games, completing 55.6% of his pass attempts for 212 yards. He mostly played in Week 18's victory over the Tennessee Titans after starters were pulled following the opening scoring drive.
2025 contract status
Mills, who signed a one-year, $5 million extension last offseason, has one year remaining on contract. He is scheduled to make $3.6 million in salary in 2025 and will count as $4.9 million against the salary cap.
Outlook for 2025
Mills should remain one of the top backups in the NFL. Barring an offseason trade, he's expected to be back at NRG Stadium for offseason workouts and the rest of the 2025 season.
The bigger question turns to his backup plan. The Texans love Mills and he loves Houston, but could the firing of Bobby Slowik lead to a reevaluation of long-term status? Time will tell how new offensive coordinator Nick Caley views Mills' potential in the offense.

Mills cannot have OnlyFans logo on bat in Hundred

England fast bowler Tymal Mills will not be allowed to display a logo promoting his OnlyFans account on his bat during The Hundred. The subscription website is known for hosting adult content but Mills - the all-time leading men's wicket taker in The Hundred - says the material on his channel is "completely safe". When announcing he had joined the platform last week, the left-arm fast bowler said his content would give subscribers "a closer, more personal look into life as a professional cricketer", adding it is "all about sharing my passion with you in a new way". Mills, who was part of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2022, has not displayed the logo in his two appearances in The Hundred so far this season. He would require approval from the England and Wales Cricket Board to do so, which will not be forthcoming. BBC Sport has been told OnlyFans does not align with the family-friendly nature of The Hundred and Mills is said to understand the decision. The 33-year-old starred in Southern Brave's opening Hundred match last week, taking 3-22 and then scoring a vital six runs as they sealed a one-wicket victory over Manchester Originals. In May, a British canoeist was banned from competing and says he is being forced to choose between his Olympic dream and his OnlyFans account. Kurts Adams Rozentals, who competes in the individual canoe slalom, was suspended in April by governing body Paddle UK following "allegations" about his posts on social media. An OnlyFans statement read: "Professional athletes from across the globe are increasingly joining OnlyFans to monetise their content, grow their online presence, and connect directly with fans. "For many, the platform plays a valuable role in supporting training and living costs, and is especially powerful for athletes in smaller or niche sports where funding and visibility can be harder to come by. "Athletes are using the platform to give fans access to the real stories behind their journey, from live content at tournaments to training tips, practice sessions, and personal reflections." What is OnlyFans? By BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team OnlyFans is an online platform where people create content (photos, videos and live streams), which can be monetised. Users can pay for monthly subscriptions, tips and pay-per-view for the service, which is known for hosting sexually explicit material, although it is not exclusively a platform for adult content. Creators are paid about 80% of the fees. Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matter

Top-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler is going with a PGA Tour caddie for the BMW Championship in Owings Mills, Maryland, as his regular looper, Ted Scott, deals with a family emergency at home in Louisiana. Scott had to leave immediately after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and Scheffler used longtime friend Brad Payne from the College Golf Fellowship. This week, he has turned to Michael Cromie. He usually works for Chris Kirk, who missed qualifying for the BMW Championship by one shot. "He works really hard and does a good job. We're both learning a new golf course this week, so it's been fun," Scheffler said. The family matter involving Scott was kept private, though Scheffler said he has spoken to him a couple of times and the family was in good spirits. "I think Ted's where he needs to be right now, and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be," Scheffler said. Scheffler finished one shot out of a playoff last week at the TPC Southwind. He remains the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup at the BMW Championship and already is assured of a $5 million bonus for staying at the top going into the FedEx Cup finale next week at East Lake. Scheffler said Cromie was learning a lot of the minutiae that often goes unnoticed by spectators, such as when he likes to snack and how often to drink, and how he likes to get the yardage and other conditions communicated to him. There's also the matter of getting yardages from tee-to-green. "Brad did a great job stepping in, but Brad is a friend, he's not a professional caddie," Scheffler said. "I think when you have a professional on the bag, it's a bit different. It's not that I don't trust Brad to do the numbers. It was just something that I think both of us probably thought it was a good idea to be double-checking each other. "Going into this week, it will be kind of more of a normal routine for me in terms of preparation over the shot and stuff like that," he said. "It's nice for me to be able to walk up to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really dial it in."
