Rekha is not easy find: Director Muzaffar Ali on why he wouldn't remake Umrao Jaan

India Today7 hours ago

Director Muzaffar Ali recently reflected his views on whether his 1981 film 'Umrao Jaan' should be re-interpreted in present times. He highlighted that even he himself wouldn't try to remake the epic based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa's novel. Ali admitted that it's not easy to bring the same level of "commitment and passion" as the original.Ali emphasised the charismatic screen-presence and commitment of Rekha and all artists associated with 'Umrao Jaan' (1981). In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said, "Rekha is not easy to find! You don't find people with such commitment — what she did, no one else can do today."advertisement
"Every person in the film was as real as Rekha, and she, too, became part of that milieu," the director went on.He added, "It reflected in everything: Shahryar's lyrics, Khayyam's music, Kumudini Lakya's choreography, Asha Bhosle's playback singing, the characterisation, the actors, the cinematography, and the costumes. Everything was crafted in layers."Ali mentioned that filmmakers have failed to recreate 'Umrao Jaan' in present times as it is not possible to surpass the 1981 classic. He admitted refraining from the remake since he hasn't "felt that same passion again."The director said, "The film has reached such a level that anything new should surpass it. Films aren't made just with budgets; they're made with commitment and passion."He mentioned how filmmakers tried to remake 'Umrao Jaan' earlier but failed to resonate with it.advertisementWhile he didn't mention it specifically, it should be noted that a remake of the film was released in 2006.Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the titular role in JP Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan', co-starring Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Suniel Shetty and others. The film wasn't a commercial success despite a stellar castAli further said, "I haven't felt that same passion again, and even I wouldn't redo it. Closure is important — you can't make it better than this.""It can't be recreated. Others have tried and failed, so why should I? Instead, I'd rather tell new stories with the same passion," he added.'Umrao Jaan' has been restored in 4K by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).While announcing the release date on Instagram, PVR Inox wrote, "A story of elegance, love, and timeless music! Revisit Umrao Jaan in stunning 4K – a cinematic jewel restored, reimagined, and reborn with our Curated Shows. #UmraoJaan re-releasing at PVR INOX on June 27!"

Raveena Tandon Faces Backlash Over Air India Post; Reddit Dubs It 'Paid' And 'Tone-Deaf'

Last Updated: A section of Reddit users accused Raveena Tandon of being 'insensitive' and speculated that the post was promotional. Raveena Tandon's recent Instagram post about flying with Air India has left the internet divided, especially in the aftermath of the tragic crash of AI171 in Ahmedabad on June 12. The actress boarded an Air India flight just days after the incident and shared pictures of her journey, noting the 'solemn atmosphere" and how the crew's 'welcoming smiles [were] tinted with sadness." In the post, she wrote, 'Godspeed always @airindia," showing solidarity with the airline and its crew. While some viewed it as an empathetic gesture toward the crew, others on Reddit questioned the timing and intent behind the post. Another user echoed the sentiment, stating, 'How can people be so out of touch with reality! Ghar tabaah hogye logon ke aur aapko kis cheez ki strength chahiye." A third added, 'So insensitive towards all the grieving loved ones who lost someone in that tragic accident. Bet it's a paid post." However, others came to her defence. One Redditor argued, 'Feel like she's motivating the crew and passengers onboard who fly regularly via these flights. There is a sense of doom and fear in crew and flyers in general so I don't see anything wrong with this." Another added, 'She's probably trying to make people understand that the Air India crew is trying their best and that people can fly Air India. I have a flight tomorrow to the UK and there's this feeling of quiet restlessness. Messages like these make me feel better. I don't think she's trying to be tone-deaf." Before Raveena, comedian Vir Das had also posted in support of the airline, calling Air India the 'best crew in the sky." The tragic crash claimed 260 lives and left several injured, shaking the country. First Published: June 17, 2025, 22:48 IST

Meghan Markle is no stranger to headlines, but her most recent viral moment — a playful twerking video from her pregnancy days — has reopened the floodgates of public opinion and royal criticism. Shared in celebration of her daughter Lilibet's fourth birthday, the throwback clip shows a very pregnant Meghan dancing joyfully in a hospital room with Prince Harry to Starrkeisha's viral hit, 'The Baby Momma Dance.'The video, originally captured four years ago, exploded across social media platforms after it was uploaded to Instagram. While many praised its unfiltered warmth and relatability, others — particularly in royal-watching circles — were far less the backlash for the first time, Meghan reflected on the viral video during her appearance on the 'Aspire With Emma Grede' podcast. With characteristic touch of humor, the Duchess acknowledged the noise surrounding the video while emphasizing the joy behind it.'Did you see my 'Baby Momma' dance?' she asked with a laugh. When the host affirmed that she had — and appreciated it — Meghan replied, 'That wasn't yesterday. That was four years ago. So it's also a really great reminder that, with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life. A real, authentic, fun life that's happening behind the scenes.'While the viral moment drew cheers from many fans, it also invited a wave of mockery and accusations of impropriety. According to a report by the Daily Mail, a source close to Buckingham Palace described the video as 'classless' and 'tragic,' suggesting that senior royals — including King Charles and Queen Camilla — were 'horrified.''There is a general sense [in the Palace] that they have lost it,' the source claimed, pointing to the clip as another example of how Harry and Meghan have strayed from traditional royal Meghan remains unfazed by the noise.
