AI isn't ready to be your therapist, but it's a top reason people use it

From falling in love with ChatGPT to deepfakes of deceased loved ones, artificial intelligence's potential for influence is vast – its myriad potential applications not yet completely charted. In truth, today's AI users are pioneering a new, still swiftly developing technological landscape, something arguably akin to the birth of social media in the early 2000s.
Yet, in an age of uncertainty about nascent generative AI's full potential, people are already turning to artificial intelligence for major life advice. One of the most common ways people use generative AI in 2025, it turns out, is for therapy. But the technology isn't ready yet.
How people use AI in 2025
As of January 2025, ChatGPT topped the list of most popular AI tools based on monthly site visits with 4.7 billion monthly visitors, according to Visual Capitalist. That dwarfed the next most popular service, Canva, more than five to one.
When it comes to understanding AI use, digging into how ChatGPT is being put to work this year is a good starting point. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT's parent company, OpenAI, recently offered some insight into how its users are making the most of the tool by age group.
'Gross oversimplification, but like older people use ChatGPT as a Google replacement,' Altman said at Sequoia Capital's AI Ascent event a few weeks ago, as transcribed by Fortune. 'Maybe people in their 20s and 30s use it as like a life advisor, and then, like people in college use it as an operating system.'
It turns out that life advice is something a lot of AI users may be seeking these days. Featured in Harvard Business Review, author and Filtered.com co-founder Marc Zao-Sanders recently completed a qualitative study on how people are using AI.
'Therapy/companionship' topped the list as the most common way people are using generative AI, followed by life organisation and then people seeking purpose in life. According to OpenAI's tech titan, it seems that generated life advice can be an incredibly powerful influence.
A Pew Research Center survey published last month reported that a 'vast majority' of surveyed AI experts said people in the United States interact with AI several times a day, if not almost constantly. Around a third of surveyed US adults said they had used a chatbot (which would include things like ChatGPT) before.
Some tech innovators, including a team of Dartmouth researchers, are leaning into the trend.
Therabot, can you treat my anxiety?
Dartmouth researchers have completed a first-of-its-kind clinical trial on a generative AI-powered therapy chatbot. The smartphone app-friendly Therabot has been in development since 2019, and its recent trial showed promise.
Just over 100 patients – each experiencing depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder or an eating disorder – participated in the experiment. According to senior study author Nicholas Jacobson, the improvement in each patient's symptoms was comparable to traditional outpatient therapy.
'There is no replacement for in-person care, but there are nowhere near enough providers to go around,' he told the college. Even Dartmouth's Therabot researchers, however, said generative AI is simply not ready yet to be anyone's therapist.
'While these results are very promising, no generative AI agent is ready to operate fully autonomously in mental health where there is a very wide range of high-risk scenarios it might encounter,' first study author Michael Heinz told Dartmouth.
'We still need to better understand and quantify the risks associated with generative AI used in mental health contexts.'
Why is AI not ready to be anyone's therapist?
RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences' Ben Bond is a PhD candidate in digital psychiatry who researches ways digital tools can be used to benefit or better understand mental health. Writing to The Conversation, Bond broke down how AI therapy tools like Therabot could pose some significant risks.
Among them, Bond explained that AI 'hallucinations' are known flaws in today's chatbot services. From quoting studies that don't exist to directly giving incorrect information, he said these hallucinations could be dangerous for people seeking mental health treatment.
'Imagine a chatbot misinterpreting a prompt and validating someone's plan to self-harm, or offering advice that unintentionally reinforces harmful behaviour,' Bond wrote. 'While the studies on Therabot and ChatGPT included safeguards – such as clinical oversight and professional input during development – many commercial AI mental health tools do not offer the same protections.'
According to Michael Best, PhD, a psychologist and contributor to Psychology Today, there are other concerns to consider, too.
'Privacy is another pressing concern,' he wrote to Psychology Today. 'In a traditional setting, confidentiality is protected by professional codes and legal frameworks. But with AI, especially when it's cloud-based or connected to larger systems, data security becomes far more complex.
'The very vulnerability that makes therapy effective also makes users more susceptible to harm if their data is breached. Just imagine pouring your heart out to what feels like a safe space, only to later find that your words have become part of a data set used for purposes you never agreed to.'
Best added that bias is a significant concern, something that could lead to AI therapists giving bad advice.
'AI systems learn from the data they're trained on, which often reflect societal biases,' he wrote. 'If these systems are being used to deliver therapeutic interventions, there's a risk that they might unintentionally reinforce stereotypes or offer less accurate support to marginalized communities.
'It's a bit like a mirror that reflects the world not as it should be, but as it has been – skewed by history, inequality, and blind spots.'
Researchers are making progress in improving AI therapy services. Patients suffering from depression experienced an average 51% reduction in symptoms after participating in Dartmouth's Therabot experiment. For those suffering from anxiety, there was an average 31% drop in symptoms. The patients suffering from eating disorders showed the lowest reduction in symptoms but still averaged 19% better off than before they used Therabot.
It's possible there's a future where artificial intelligence can be trusted to treat mental health, but – according to the experts – we're just not there yet. – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Tribune News Service

DeepSeek shook the technology world this year when it released AI models that compete with Western ones like OpenAI's ChatGPT while offering lower operational costs. The upgrade to DeepSeek's V3 model follows two other recent updates to its core models — an R1 model update in May and an earlier V3 enhancement in March. For domestic chip support, DeepSeek said in a WeChat post its DeepSeek-V3.1 model's UE8M0 FP8 precision format is optimised for 'soon-to-be-released next-generation domestic chips'. The company did not identify which specific chip models or manufacturers would be supported. FP8, or 8-bit floating point, is a data processing format that allows AI models to operate more efficiently, using less memory while running faster than traditional methods. The DeepSeek-V3.1 features a hybrid inference structure that enables the model to operate in both reasoning and non-reasoning modes, the company said in a WeChat post on Thursday. Users can toggle between these modes using a 'deep thinking' button on the company's official app and web platform, both of which now run the V3.1 version. The company will also adjust the costs for using the model's API, a platform that allows developers of other apps and web products to integrate its AI models, starting September 6, the statement showed. — Reuters

AUGUST 21 — Energy has always been at the heart of human progress. Every major leap in industry and technology has been accompanied by a shift in how we power our industries. Coal fired the engines of the Industrial Revolution and propelled Britain to global influence. Oil and electricity fuelled America's rise in the 20th century. Today the same question returns to us. What energy source will define the future, and where will Malaysia stand in it? We face a difficult reality. Our energy demand is climbing year after year. As our economy grows, so does the appetite for power. It is no longer just homes and factories drawing electricity. The dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) and its rapid expansion have accelerated the growth of power consuming AI data centres. Data centres have nearly doubled in Malaysia since 2021 and more are on the way. These are trends we can continue to expect seeing in a future where electricity demand will only increase. At the same time, the climate clock is ticking. Malaysia has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. These are ambitious targets, and rightly so, because the cost of inaction is already visible. Floods, heatwaves, and shifting weather patterns are no longer distant warnings but lived realities for Malaysians today. So the challenge is clear. How do we keep powering growth while reducing emissions? Renewables will and must remain a big part of the energy mix. Solar, hydro, and biomass are expanding, but they come with limits. Solar depends on weather and are intermittent. Hydro requires massive investments, land and can disrupt ecosystems. Biomass competes with food and land. Large-scale batteries, often suggested as a solution to intermittency, are still too costly and limited in storage capacity. We cannot bet our entire future on sources that, while promising, cannot yet fully replace fossil fuels. Nuclear has long been dismissed in Malaysia as too expensive or too risky. But SMRs are changing that age old argument. They are designed to be safer, quicker to build, and cheaper than the old mega-reactors of the past. They are flexible enough to plug into different parts of the grid, and their land footprint is far smaller. Most importantly, they provide steady, near zero carbon electricity. This is something no other low-carbon source can guarantee at scale. Encouragingly, Malaysia has already begun taking steps to transition to nuclear energy. The 13th Malaysia Plan outlines nuclear energy as part of the nation's long-term energy mix by 2031. MyPOWER, a dedicated agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation has been tasked with implementing the government's nuclear energy program under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines which includes building regulatory capacity and training a skilled workforce. On the international front, Malaysia has strengthened cooperation with the United States through their expressed readiness to commence negotiation on the 123 Agreement, a legally binding framework for significant peaceful nuclear cooperation between the United States and another country. This would give Malaysia access to nuclear technology, expertise, and US nuclear safety frameworks. And in Asean, Malaysia has played a responsible role by urging nuclear weapon states to ratify the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty — showing that our interest is firmly in peaceful, transparent, and cooperative nuclear development. The opportunity is clear. Nuclear power could help Malaysia secure its energy future, meet its climate commitments, and fuel industries of tomorrow. But more than that, it could give us a strategic edge. History shows that countries mastering the energy technology of their age rise in influence. If we act early, Malaysia could position itself as a regional leader in clean and reliable energy, rather than a follower scrambling to catch up. The question is not whether Malaysia can afford to adopt nuclear power. The real question is whether we can afford to be left behind? SAN FRANCISCO: Amnesty International on Wednesday accused US authorities of using artificial intelligence tools from Palantir and Babel Street to monitor immigrants and target non-citizens at demonstrations supporting Palestinians. A review of documents, including Department of Homeland Security public records, showed that software provided by the AI firms enables mass surveillance and assessment of people, often to target those not from the United States, according to Amnesty International. "The US government is deploying invasive AI-powered technologies within a context of a mass deportation agenda and crackdown on pro-Palestine expression, leading to a host of human rights violations," said Erika Guevara-Rosas of the rights group. "This has led to a pattern of unlawful detentions and mass deportations, creating a climate of fear and exacerbating the 'chilling effect' for migrant communities and for international students across schools and campuses." Amnesty research determined the United States is using the AI tools to track migrants, refugees and asylum seekers as part of a "Catch and Revoke" initiative. The State Department initiative involves social media monitoring, visa status tracking, and automated threat assessments of visa holders such as foreign students, according to Amnesty. "Systems like Babel X and Immigration OS (from Palantir) play a key role in the US administration's ability to carry out its repressive tactics," said Guevara-Rosas. "Unless Palantir and Babel Street can demonstrate they can use their leverage as suppliers to improve the serious human rights consequences borne by the policies of their clients, these companies should immediately cease their work with the US administration related to immigration enforcement." Use of the AI surveillance tools risks fuelling US President Donald Trump's capacity to "deport marginalised people on a whim," Amnesty argued. Since being sworn in for a second term in January, Trump has targeted top US universities over claims they are politically biased towards "woke" politics and has charged – without evidence – that they have engaged in antisemitic policies. The administration has characterised widespread campus protests and sit-ins in the United States calling for an end to Israel's war in Gaza as being "antisemitic," and moved to expel foreign students and professors who took part in them.
