Seattle's Cal Raleigh becomes the first catcher and switch-hitter to win the Home Run Derby

Chicago Tribune14 hours ago
ATLANTA — Seattle's Cal Raleigh won his first All-Star Home Run Derby after leading the big leagues in long balls going into the break, defeating Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero 18-15 in the final round Monday night.
The Mariners breakout slugger nicknamed Big Dumper advanced from the first round on a tiebreaker by less than an inch over the Athletics' Brent Rooker, then won his semifinal 19-13 over Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz, whose 513-foot first-round drive over Truist Park's right-center field seats was the longest of the night.
Hitting second in the final round, the 22-year-old Caminero closed within three dingers, took three pitches and hit a liner to left field.
Becoming the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title, Raleigh had reached the All-Star break with a major league-leading 38 home runs. He became the second Mariners player to take the title after three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr.
Raleigh was pitched to by his father, Todd, former coach of Tennessee and Western Carolina. His younger brother Todd Raleigh Jr. did the catching.
Just the second Derby switch-hitter after Baltimore's Adley Rutschman in 2023, Raleigh hit his first eight left-handed, took a timeout, then hit seven right-handed. Going back to lefty, he then hit two more in the bonus round and stayed lefty for the semifinals and the final.
Caminero beat Minnesota's Byron Buxton 8-7 in the other semifinal.
Atlanta's Matt Olson, Washington's James Wood, the New York Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the Athletics' Brent Rooker were eliminated in the first round of the annual power show.
Column: For Chicago's MLB All-Stars in Atlanta, a chance to show they belongCruz and Caminero each hit 21 long balls and Buxton had 20 in the opening round. Raleigh and Rooker had 17 apiece, but Raleigh advanced on the tiebreaker of their longest homer, 470.61 feet to 470.53.
Cruz's long drive was the hardest hit at 118 mph.
The longest derby homer since Statcast started tracking in 2016 was 520 feet by Juan Soto in the mile-high air of Denver's Coors Field in 2021. Last year, the longest drive at Arlington, Texas, was 473 feet by Atlanta's Marcell Ozuna.
Wood hit 16 homers, including a 486-foot shot and one that landed on the roof of the Chop House behind the right-field wall. Olson, disappointing his hometown fans, did not go deep on his first nine swings and finished with 15, He also was eliminated in the first round in 2021.
Chisholm hit just three homers, the fewest since the timer format started in 2015.

Utah Jazz reportedly not looking to trade Lauri Markkanen

John Collins? Traded. Collin Sexton? Traded. Jordan Clarkson? Bought out. Lauri Markkanen? It looks like the veteran forward is staying in Utah and will not be traded, Tim MacMahon reports at ESPN. [Trading Markkanen] is not Utah's intention, sources told ESPN. It would be too much to describe Markkanen as untouchable, but the Jazz still project the All-Star forward as a key player in their future core. While this is what a front office says when trying to gain leverage and drive up the price tag on a potential trade, in this case, there are reasons to believe Utah means it. For one thing, even if Markkanen bounces back to the form of his first season in Utah — when he was an All-Star and won the Most Improved Player award — it's not going to disrupt the clear plan for next season, which is to, how should we put this, end up with excellent lottery odds. Secondly, his massive salary — his four-year, $195.9 million contract extension kicks in this season, starting at $46.4 million — makes finding a workable trade difficult. Finally, and tied to that contract, Markkanen struggled through an injury-plagued last season, averaging 19 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, but his shooting efficiency was down across the board, including 34.6% from 3-point range. Teams are going to want to see the 28-year-old regain his form. Which is to say, the Jazz are going to wait, play Markannen with their young stars like the just-drafted Ace Bailey, Kyle Filipowski (who has looked fantastic at Summer League) and Walker Kessler, and see how things shake out. At the deadline, maybe the Jazz and another team out there will feel differently, maybe not, but for now expect Markkanen to stay in Utah. Where he has wanted to be.

WNBA ready for the spotlight with All-Star Game in Indiana this weekend

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA finishes off the first half of its season this week before heading into the All-Star break in Indiana, which will be a showcase for young star Caitlin Clark. The Fever have three all-stars with Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell all playing in the game Saturday. Clark, who is one of the captains, took both her Indiana teammates for her team in the game. Before Saturday's contest, the Fever have a busy week with back-to-back games, first in Boston against Connecticut and then in New York on Wednesday. Indiana is trying to get some momentum heading into the break as they are just over .500 heading into Tuesday night's game. Minnesota, led by the other All-Star captain, Napheesa Collier, has the best record in the league at 19-4. The Lynx played four games in six days over a stretch they went 2-2. They have one more game against second-place Phoenix on Wednesday before heading into the break. Sidelined Atlanta's Rhyne Howard will be sidelined for the rest of the month with a left knee injury she picked up against Indiana. Howard earned her third All-Star nod earlier this month and was drafted by Team Collier. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will name a replacement for her. Howard is expected to make a full recovery and a timeline for her return will be provided at a later date, the Dream said. Strong ratings ABC had its most watched WNBA game ever on Saturday when Paige Bueckers and Dallas faced Clark and Indiana. The Fever won in a blowout in the first pro matchup between the two star guards. The game averaged 2.1 million viewers. Record breaker Naz Hillmon played in her 128th straight game, setting an Atlanta franchise record by passing Iziane Castro Marques' mark of 127. Natisha Heidman of Minnesota has the longest active streak with 199 consecutive games played. Dawn Staley holds the league record with 263. Power poll rankings Phoenix moved up to the No. 1 spot, passing Minnesota after beating the Lynx last week. The Mercury haven't been in the top spot since 2018. The Lynx were second and New York was third. Atlanta, Indiana and Seattle followed the Liberty. Washington moved up two spots to seventh with Golden State and Las Vegas next. Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas and Connecticut rounded out the poll. Player of the week Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix averaged 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to help the Mercury win both their games last week. Other players receiving votes were Shakira Austin of Washington and Angel Reese of Chicago. Game of the week Team Clark vs. Team Collier, Saturday. The league's All-Star Game will take place Saturday in Indianapolis and Clark will surely want to put on a show for her hometown fans. ___ AP WNBA: recommended Item 1 of 1

Jacob Misiorowski Responds to Phillies' All-Star Outrage

Jacob Misiorowski Responds to Phillies' All-Star Outrage originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are not happy about one All-Star Game selection. Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber are still playing in Atlanta. Still, some Phillies feel that there should be more representation, namely Christopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez, who were passed up for Milwaukee Brewers rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski. Advertisement Here is what Trea Turner and J.T. Realmuto had to say, via Matt Gelb of The Athletic: 'What a joke,' Turner said. 'That's f— terrible. I mean, that's terrible, dude.' 'That's just how MLB does it now,' Realmuto said. 'Nothing against the Misiorowski kid. But those two (Sánchez and Suárez) are deserving of being on the team in the first place. There's no doubt.' The Sánchez aspect of this is complicated because his Sunday start would have restricted him in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic. Still, his teammates are right. He is 8-2 with a 2.50 ERA, a 2.74 FIP, and 122 strikeouts to 32 walks over 115 innings. Suárez, who has missed time, is 7-3 with a 1.94 ERA, a 2.97 FIP, and 78 strikeouts to 22 walks over 83 and 2/3 innings. Advertisement Jul 8, 2025; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski (32) throws a pitch during the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at American Family Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-Imagn ImagesJeff Hanisch-Imagn Images 'The Miz' is electric, and he has the stuff to rival even Paul Skenes as the face of MLB pitching over the next decade. He is also 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA and a 3.82 FIP, but he has only made five (yes, five!) starts and was named an All-Star. Here is how he responded to Philadelphia's outrage: 'They're not happy,' Misiorowski said, via The Athletic. '(But) they're not upset with me. There's nothing I did. They were all nice to meet. (The) clubhouse has been good.' The Misiorowski choice does feel a bit cheap, and there were plenty of more deserving veterans, such as Sánchez or Suárez, who probably should have received the honors instead. Advertisement But the 23-year-old has taken the league by storm. And it took just one month to do so. Misiorowski starts have become must-watch, and few pitchers possess that fastball. The Phillies are justified in their disappointment, but 'The Miz' sells, and the MLB will do everything possible to promote a small-market star.
