Flooding reminds Palestine residents of tragic deaths in 2016
PALESTINE, Texas (KETK) – Rainstorms in East Texas caused flash flooding in the city of Palestine on Tuesday. Major flooding in Palestine as 3 inches of heavy rain drops 'It was a lot of water,' Palestine local Christine Essary said. 'A lot of lightning, A lot of thunder' The water blocked roadways and prompted an evacuation of Timber Drive. The intense rain reminded Essary of the tragic flood in 2016, which claimed the lives of four children and their grandmother. 'The lady that died, I knew her personally, and she was taking care of her grandbabies, and grandbabies are really a lot to me, I have my own,' Essary said. The Palestine chief of police Mark Harcrow said the area was evacuated out of precaution… 'Those of us that were here will always remember that,' Harcrow said. 'So, we always make sure to keep an eye on that neighborhood backs up to a creek bed.' First Baptist Church of Timpson damaged during severe weather He said fortunately there was no property damage on Tuesday and the flood waters have already started to recede. 'The water didn't get too high, and they were able to return home, return back to their homes pretty quick,' Harcrow said. It was a sigh of relief for this community that has already been through a tragic loss due to flooding. 'It was like a breath of fresh air just to know that everybody down here is okay,' Essary said.
