Kyle Schwarber will defer his Indiana University Hall of Fame selection because of attendance rule
Indiana's induction is set for Sept. 5, a day Schwarber's Philadelphia Phillies visit the Miami Marlins as they attempt to win their second straight NL East title. Schwarber was selected in his first year of eligibility. Indiana's athletic department announced the selections on Thursday.
Schwarber was one of the school's biggest baseball stars, leading the Hoosiers to two Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles while ranking among career leaders in hits (238), home turns (40), runs (182) and slugging percentage (.607) while batting .341.
He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, made his major league debut the following June and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016.
This season, the 32-year-old Schwarber ranks among the major league leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League.
The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies.
Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class.
The other selections are Cody Zeller, who has spent the last 11 seasons playing in the NBA, All-American rower Meradith Dickensheets, 2008 NCAA wrestling champion Angel Escobedo, former football star Mel Groomes, five-time track and field All-American Glenn Terry and Peggy Martin, a pioneering three-sport star in field hockey, women's basketball and softball from 1969-72.

Maddy Siegrist's return to Wings from knee injury delayed at least 1 more game
DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Wings forward Maddy Siegrist's return from a knee injury will have to wait at least one more game. The Wings ruled Siegrist out of a game Friday night against the Indiana Fever a day after saying her 17-game absence because of a right knee fracture was set to end. The Wings are playing the Fever at the home of the Dallas Mavericks. It's the second time the Wings will play at American Airlines Center. Dallas faced the Fever at the AAC in late June, losing 94-86 when Caitlin Clark was sidelined by a groin injury. Clark returned after that, but this meeting with the Wings will be Clark's sixth consecutive game missed after the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year aggravated a groin injury. Siegrist, the NCAA Division I scoring leader ahead of Clark when she played for Villanova in 2022-23, was limited to 11 games in an injury-plagued rookie season two years ago. Yankees release veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman after a busy trade deadline
MIAMI (AP) — The New York Yankees released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday, a day after making a flurry of moves at baseball's trade deadline. Stroman, who is in his 11th season in the majors, was cut ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The Yankees acquired All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, as well as utilityman José Caballero in separate trades Thursday. New York also optioned right-handers Ian Hamilton and Yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the 26-man roster. Stroman signed a two-year deal worth $37 million with New York before the start of last season and is still owed the rest of his $18.5 million salary. He has an $18 million conditional player option for 2026 that would be exercised if he pitches 140 or more innings in 2025. Stroman has pitched only 39 innings so far this season — he missed 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation. He made his ninth start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, picking up the win after allowing four runs and six hits in five innings. Stroman is 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA. CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Cade Horton tossed two-hit ball over five innings, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a terrific start by Trevor Rogers to beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on Friday. The Cubs showed a video tribute of Ryne Sandberg and held 23 seconds of silence prior to their first home game since the Hall of Famer died. Former teammates Shawon Dunston, Jody Davis and Rick Sutcliffe then honored their friend by carrying a base onto the field and placing it at second.
