Srinagar: Armed forces on Thursday killed one terrorist in an ongoing operation in Basantgarh area of Udhampur in Jammu, where four infiltrators were suspected to be trapped at the encounter spot.The White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said in the joint operation by Army and J&K Police, one infiltrator had been killed by evening. The armed forces had been tracking this group for more than one year.The operation, codenamed Operation Bihali , comes ahead of the annual Amarnath yatra, which begins on July 3. The operation started on Thursday morning in a forested remote area of Bihali, where the Army and police launched a joint operation amid rain and fog following a specific input regarding the presence of suspected infiltrators allegedly associated with Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed."Contact was established with terrorists around 8.30 am... They are believed to be four in number and we have been tracking (this group) for the last one year," Bhim Sen Tuti, Jammu range IGP, told media persons on the sidelines of a function in Jammu.He said a search operation was going on despite foggy conditions and the real picture would emerge once the weather improved.Officials said the trapped infiltrators were found hiding near Karoor nallah of the area. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps said in a post on X, "Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army and J&K Police in the Bihali area of Basantgarh. Contact has been established with terrorists. The operation is currently in progress."

They were unable to pay this month's instalment due to financial hardship. (HT Photo) The deceased were residents of Harbanspura. The couple, who had been running a clothing business in Gandhi Nagar, left behind a suicide note blaming bank officials for mentally harassing and humiliating them. According to ADCP-1 Sameer Verma, the couple stated in their note that they had taken a loan from a bank and had consistently paid several instalments. However, they were unable to pay this month's instalment due to financial hardship. 'The couple alleged that bank employees began to harass and insult them, which pushed them into severe mental distress. Feeling hopeless and humiliated, they ended their lives,' said Verma. Police have taken the suicide note into custody and launched an investigation into the allegations. 'We are verifying the claims mentioned in the note and identifying the bank personnel involved. Appropriate action will be taken after a detailed probe,' the officer added. Officials further asserted that the bodies have been sent for postmortem for further investigation.

Driver accused of molesting girl (14) in cab denied bail
Mumbai: A special Pocso court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of a Vikhroli-based driver with a cab aggregator arrested in May for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old during a ride to her home, observing that his claim of being falsely implicated was unacceptable, especially given that the girl and he were not acquainted. Therefore, I am not inclined to release the accused on bail," the judge said. The girl, through her father and special public prosecutor Geeta Sharma, opposed the bail plea of Shreyansh Pandey (23), expressing fear for her safety. Sharma said releasing him could allow him to engage in similar acts with other passengers and he could flee to his home state before the trial. As per the prosecution, on May 13, the girl called up her father to inform him that her class had ended and requested a cab to get home. Her father booked her a ride with a taxi app. When he called her up to confirm the driver's arrival, she said a cab with a different licence plate had reached her. The girl boarded the cab and sent a text message to her father. A little later, the father checked the app and learnt that the cab was on Eastern Express Highway, which didn't fall on the designated route. On being asked how she had got there, the girl said she repeatedly told the driver to stop the vehicle but he refused. She said the driver was playing loud music, had made two incorrect turns and missed another turn for her home. The father questioned Pandey, who allegedly tried to grab the girl's phone. The father pressed the safety button on the app and also dialled 100. Upon hearing the conversation, the driver stopped the cab and the girl got out. In her complaint, the girl said Pandey had kept staring at her through the rearview mirror, offered her a cigarette, and tried to touch her with bad intentions under the pretext of taking her phone.

UP govt expedites process to recover Rs 650cr dues from toll collection firms
1 2 Lucknow: The UP govt has to recover more than Rs 650 crore dues from the highway toll management companies. Following the Bhadohi case — where a Delhi-based firm secured lease for toll collection in UP by paying just Rs 100 stamp duty instead of Rs 63 cores — the stamp and registration department carried out an audit to find the status of all pending recovery cases. The stamp and registration department has started reaching out to the district administration in 31 districts to expedite the recovery process. A total of 95 cases pertaining to evasion of stamp duty by toll companies have been detected. While the majority of cases are pending with operators who entered into an agreement with the National Highways Authority of India, operators engaged by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority for toll collection over expressways are also yet to make payments. Among the 95 cases, 23 cases are sub-judice while 72 cases are pending before collectors in various districts. Among the 72, recovery proceedings have been initiated against the promoters of 17 private agencies engaged for toll collection. While the company engaged by NHAI to manage the Meerut expressway has the highest stamp duty dues of around Rs 26 crore, the one managing the Lucknow–Rae Bareli national highway has to pay Rs 10 crore. Interestingly, 15 out of 95 toll operators had entered into an agreement with NHAI on stamp paper worth Rs 100, whereas, as per the estimates prepared by the department, such companies need to cough up Rs 130.40 crore. Though in some cases the procedure to recover the amount was initiated more than five years ago, the matter picked pace only from Oct last year after the state govt urged the district collectors to expedite the process. In July last year, the Supreme Court while disposing of a similar case from Madhya Pradesh had dubbed the concession agreement between toll operators and NHAI as a lease, putting the liability of paying the stamp duty on the agreement value over the value mentioned in the contract.
