Bodies of 2 accident victims swapped, kin find out just before cremation

Meerut: In a major goof-up by health staff at Palwal civil hospital in Haryana, bodies of two Meerut-based traders -- Abhinav Agarwal, 42, and Amit Agarwal, 45 -- who were killed in a road accident in Palwal were allegedly swapped and handed over to the wrong families in UP after postmortem. A senior health department official at Palwal hospital said an investigation has been initiated. The "mix up" was first noticed by the family of Abhinav on Tuesday morning after they removed the shroud -- just before the 'Ganga jal' ritual and cremation. Abhinav's father, Jitendra Agarwal, said the tags must have been exchanged on the wrapped bodies when they received it from govt mortuary. "The staff there insisted not to check the bodies, as they were in bad shape (after the accident). We would've cremated the wrong person had we not uncovered the face for 'antim darshan (last glimpse)'. Additional trauma amid the grief would've been immense for the two families," he said. Amit's father, Amarnath Agarwal, confirmed they discovered the error when alerted by Abhinav's family -- also minutes before the last rites. Both families thereafter called off the funeral rituals and transported the respective bodies via ambulances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Vivek Bajpaee, a relative, said Amit and Abhinav were friends and ran shops selling 'puja' material in Meerut. "They were on their way to Mathura to purchase goods when the accident happened," added Bajpayee. They were travelling from Meerut to Mathura when their vehicle collided with a trailer truck on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway on Monday. The collision impact left the vehicle completely damaged and the bodies were taken to the nearest hospital in Palwal.

Temple to see safety revamp after tragedy

Lucknow: A day after two electrocution deaths at the Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Haidergarh, Barabanki, which occurred during the early hours of Monday, authorities launched a major safety and accountability drive. The temple management and police, under intense scrutiny, began removing old and faulty wiring and fans installed along the jalabhishek route's tin shed, where the incident occurred. According to officials, the electricity department cut off the power supply to the temple premises on Monday night, citing hazardous, unverified internal wiring. The move came after eyewitnesses and media reported that a network of worn-out electrical wires parallel to the tin shed transferred current to the metal barricade poles, triggering the fatal shock. On Tuesday morning, the temple staff began dismantling the damaged wiring, generator connections, and electrical appliances. Manager Vinod Giri confirmed that the police ordered complete rewiring and inspection by certified experts, and no electricity will be restored until the premises are declared safe. Alongside, the Haidergarh power division also stepped up efforts by installing protective netting below high-tension (11,000 kV) lines that run above the main Barabanki–Haidergarh road leading to the temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Travel smart in Tenerife with budget tips Yahoo! A four-member team from the Directorate of Electrical Safety also inspected the site on Tuesday and collected evidence. Preliminary administrative reports suggested that a cable broke due to a monkey's interference. Two devotees were electrocuted, and 46 others sustained minor electric shocks after an electric wire snapped and fell onto a tin shed inside the premises of the Shri Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple in Haidergarh tehsil of Barabanki district on Monday morning. The incident that occurred during the Jalabhishek rituals during the holy month of Shrawan when the temple was crowded with devotees led to a stampede-like situation.
