
South Africans are sick to death of persistent corruption by politicians
The continued failure of South Africa's political leadership to deal decisively with corruption by holding the perpetrators accountable is turning this country into a failing or failed state. South Africans are sick to death of persistent corruption by political leaders.
It seems we are headed for a possibly violent revolution if impunity is not stopped urgently. If you don't believe me, just look at the agitation of ordinary people who loudly express their support for Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. On social media, some have even threatened widespread looting if something bad were to happen to him.
Against the backdrop of July 2021's devastating riots, we are treading on dangerous ground. Mkhwanazi represents an idea of the people's hatred of the impunity of the corrupt elite. People are infuriated by the repetition of hollow anti-corruption rhetoric by those in power, yet they know that behind the scenes they are colluding with criminals to milk Treasury dry.
Writing in Good Governance Africa's flagship publication, Africa in Fact (special edition on the proposed International Anti-Corruption Court), researcher Nnaemeka Ohamadike states that 'the gap between anti-corruption rhetoric and real law enforcement remains a breeding ground for impunity, weakening governance and leaving citizens to bear the cost, especially in Africa'.
He further refers to the World Bank's definition of corruption as the extent to which power is 'misused for private gain, encompassing both petty and grand corruption, as well as the influence of elites and private interests in capturing state institutions'.
This continues in South Africa year after year, but nothing is done to combat it.
South Africa has been cursed by bad political leadership and policies, from colonial times through to the apartheid period and now the so-called democratic dispensation. Colonial political leaders committed the original sin of dispossessing the indigenous people of their land and resources.
The architects of apartheid curated an effective racist system that balkanised the people of this country and continued to dispossess the people of their land, minerals and other resources and entrenched grand corruption.
Not to be outdone, the post-democracy kleptocratic elites continue their systematic industrial-scale corruption enterprise, siphoning public resources for the benefit of the few.
Mkhwanazi's revelations are the latest in a string of corruption scandals that have blighted this country since the dawn of democracy. A quick scan of post-1994 South Africa shows a series of major corruption scandals from 1999 to 2021, exposing systemic misuse of public funds and abuse of power by high-ranking officials and political elites.
Starting with the Arms Deal in 1999, it details successive scandals including Travelgate, Oilgate, the Selebi bribery case, Limpopo tender fraud and high-profile cases such as Nkandla and State Capture involving former president Jacob Zuma and the Gupta family.
Despite various investigations and some convictions, many cases ended with limited accountability.
Recent scandals like the Bosasa revelations, PPE corruption during Covid-19, Tembisa Hospital, Life Esidimeni and the Digital Vibes contract highlight ongoing issues with political patronage, weak enforcement and slow or stalled prosecutions.
The pattern points to a deeply entrenched culture of corruption within state institutions.
The boldness and audacity of the corrupt criminal elite is increasing while the decisiveness of our political leaders to deal with them is sadly decreasing. It seems that criminal elements are firmly embedded into our political systems in a way that compromises and disempowers our leaders from acting. It is a total failure to deal with corruption, year after year.
Even if Mkhwanazi himself were to be found wanting in some respect, the idea will persist because people are sick of being taken for a ride by the so-called leaders.
In 2011, the South African Constitutional Court judgment in the Glenister case stated that 'corruption is… an antithesis to democracy and the rule of law. Corruption diverts resources that are needed to improve the lives of citizens to enrich a few, at great cost to many. Corruption prevents the state from fulfilling its constitutional obligations, erodes the legitimacy of our democratic government and subverts the rule of law.'
As this continues unabated, we must brace ourselves for a very bad retaliation, the likes of which this country has never seen. The only thing that will prevent this is strong action against the powerful political elites who enable and reward corruption in our society.
On 11 July 2025, Karam Singh of Integrity Initiatives International, and Ruth Kolevsohn wrote in the Mail & Guardian that 'frustration remains that the criminal justice system in many countries is unable to deal with the weight and magnitude of high volume, multi-actor, multiple jurisdiction transactions… In global systems, where no single jurisdiction can be relied upon to have the political will and modalities to go after kleptocrats and their stolen assets, we need alternative solutions.
'Presently, there is no international institution to hold kleptocrats accountable when the countries they rule are unwilling or unable to do so. The case for establishing an international anti-corruption court (IACC) has been mooted as a feasible solution to address the constraints of domestic systems.'
It is for this reason that Good Governance Africa is partnering with Integrity Initiatives International to promote the establishment of the IACC, and the drafting and ratification of the International Anti-Corruption Court Treaty.

ActionSA unveils service delivery tracker of City of Tshwane
JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA has unveiled a new service delivery tracker for the City of Tshwane, aimed at holding the coalition government accountable. The party said the tool would help residents monitor progress and failures under the multiparty administration led by Mayor Nasiphi Moya. ActionSA currently forms part of the African National Congress (ANC)-led multiparty coalition in the capital, with its councillor, Moya, as mayor. The party previously launched a similar app for tracking the Government of National Unity (GNU). At a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday, ActionSA national chairperson, Micheal Beaumont, said the motivation for the tracker was partly due to fighting misinformation around the coalition government. "As a government, ActionSA wants to be held accountable. We don't want to operate in an environment where we simply engage with our voters once every five years. We believe there must be a continuous process and it starts with doing what this GNU government has not done and that's defining your priorities, which is codifying how they should be measured and putting it out there to South Africans and civil society so they can hold you accountable against those standards."

Outrage as Tiffany Meek WEEPS after NO BAIL verdict
Tiffany Meek – the Johannesburg mom accused of murdering her son Jayden-Lee Meek – wept as she was denied bail at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court. Many South Africans are sharing their judgement and suspicions over her visible emotions in court, as compared to her previous media interviews. The 31-year-old has been charged with murder, crimen injuria, and defeating the ends of justice. She has maintained that she is being 'framed'. Tiffany is accused of striking her son on the head with a blunt force object after reporting him missing just hours earlier. On 14 May, his near-naked and beaten body was found on the steps of their apartment complex in Fleurhof, Johannesburg. After a lengthy bail hearing application, Roodeport Magistrate Court judge Annelin Africa delivered her ruling on Tuesday, 29 July – no bail for Tiffany Meek. The mother of Jayden-Lee Meek wept as the magistrate detailed why she believed the woman had attempted to 'mislead' the court. She read in her verdict: 'If applicant (Tiffany) has the ability to deceive without hesitation, then surely the applicant has the ability to influence witnesses, especially her family. She will, likewise, have the ability to undermine or jeopardize the objectives of the proper functioning of the criminal justice system.' 'Her release will have the likelihood of undermining the public peace.' The magistrate pointed out that Tiffany Meek's fixed address in her bail application – in KwaZulu-Natal – was out of the confines of Gauteng province. 'The applicant failed to satisfy this court that she discharged the onus in proving, on a balance of probabilities, that the interest of justice permits her release from detention', she added. As the verdict was read, Tiffany Meek shook her head in disagreement. She wept and continued to cry as she was led out of the courtroom. On social media, many South Africans have compared Tiffany Meek's distraught appearance at her bail hearing to her collected and calm composure in media interviews after Jayden-Lee Meek's death. Carol Ann Sauls Hendricks posted on Facebook: 'Not a tear was shed when she was interviewed after her son's death. She's crying because she was caught out'. Chants Lundall added: 'She cried so much during the bail proceedings. But never cried when the media interviewed her before she was arrested 🫨🫨🫨.' Another, shared a clip of Tiffany Meek's interview with eNCA just days after Jayden-Lee Meek's death. Genevieve Kelly posted: 'What I fail to understand is that Tiffany Meek was so bold and brave in the initial phase of this case. Having interviews with TV crews and playing the blame game. Watching all the interviews, not once did I see a crocodile tear shed for Jayden-Lee. Not even when she found out that he had passed on. 'She went to identify his body and looked so calm and composed. I know that a mother who isn't involved in her child's death would be emotionally, mentally, and physically distraught'. What i fail to understand is that Tiffany Meek was so bold and brave in the initial phase of this interviews with TV crews and playing the blame the police for doing a shitty job when all the time she knew that she and perhaps her other people had killed a beautiful child who had so much to live for. Then watching all the once did I see a crocodile tear shed for even when she found out that Jaden had passed on. Which mother has interviews when her child is missing? Who leaves their home knowing that their child is missing?wouldn't you want to stay there hoping and waiting for any news? Then In the one interview she says she always knew at the back of her mind that he would return home BUT it didn't hit her until she got the call that her child had been didn't hit her? The fact that she already knew that he wouldn't be found alive or the fact that she knew that she had killed him?She deserves to ROT IN JAIL. They've also poked holes in Tiffany Meek's claim that she did not return home until she received a call that her son had died. Tiffany reported her son Jayden-Lee's disappearance on the afternoon of 13 May. She claims he did not return home from school, a claim that has been disputed by several witnesses. Police questioned the school transport driver, a fellow passenger, and a day security guard at her Swazi's Place complex, who confirmed that Jayden-Lee had been dropped off at home. Tiffany alleges that she spent the night at her mother's house in Florida, and not at her home. She claimed it that this was because her mother's home was closer to the Florida police station. However, a night security guard claimed she returned home in the early morning of 14 May and left her home shortly before the body of Jayden-Lee was discovered.
