Smartphone and tablet manufacturers will soon have to rate their products on a
repairability index
to help consumers take informed decision as a government panel on Friday submitted a report recommending a framework for that. 'The Framework on Repairability Index for Mobile and Electronic Sector' aims to help consumers make informed decisions while purchasing devices, on the lines of energy efficiency ratings applicable for electrical appliances.

The panel, constituted by the consumer affairs ministry and chaired by Additional Secretary Bharat Khera, finalised the framework after reaching consensus among industry and consumer organisations.
"Companies are not manufacturing devices for life. They are actually forcing consumers to buy another product because they have planned for their obsolescence. Technology has favoured making sure products fail and have short lifespans," Consumer Affairs Secretary

The whole purpose of the repairability index is to sensitise manufacturers about their responsibility for providing a
repair ecosystem
and to also rate their products on the index so that consumers can take informed decisions, she said.
The panel has submitted the report to the ministry, Khare said and added, "The ministry will examine the recommendations and accordingly will issue some guidelines."

In its first phase, the framework will cover smartphones and tablets, after analyzing nearly 20,000 consumer complaints received on the National Consumer Helpline regarding effectiveness of repair ecosystems.

The panel has recommended a five-point rating scale that should be prominently displayed at points of sale, on packaging, and websites. Original Equipment Manufacturers will be responsible for declaring the rating upfront.
The rating will be based on several parameters including repairability of key components like display screens, batteries, camera assemblies, charging ports, and speakers; ease of disassembly; types of fasteners and tools used; availability of spare parts; and software update policies.
"If a particular service is satisfactory, it will get a score of five. If it is intermediary, it will get a score of three," Khera explained.
Similar standards exist in the EU, the US, and France, while other countries are working towards implementing such measures.
"India being an important economy could not have been left behind," the panel chief added.
India is the world's second largest market for smartphones after China.
While feature phones are not currently covered under the index, Khera indicated that the scope could gradually expand.
"Once this is implemented, there will be learning throughout and then we can increase the scope," he noted.
The consumer affairs ministry will examine the recommendations before issuing guidelines.

Borivali, a locality in Mumbai's western suburbs, has welcomed a high-profile new tenant, the Apple Store at Sky City Mall, developed by listed real estate firm Oberoi Realty. Over the past decade, Borivali has transformed into a premium retail hub, say real estate experts. In addition to the newly opened Sky City Mall (launched in March 2025), the area boasts at least three prominent retail high streets that attract leading global and domestic brands. With this growing commercial presence, 'Brand Borivali' is fast emerging as a strong contender to established retail destinations like Andheri, Bandra, and even South Mumbai. Apple India has leased 12,616 sq ft retail space in Mumbai's Borivali suburb for ₹17.35 lakh monthly rent as it prepares to launch its second store in Maharashtra and fourth in the country, according to documents accessed by real estate data analytics firm Propstack. The lease transaction registered on May 28, 2025, is for a total period of 130 months (nearly 11 years), with a rent escalation of 15% every three years. Apple has also paid a security deposit of ₹1.04 crore as part of the deal. The document showed that the lease has a lock-in period of 10 years and 10 months, effective from the commencement date. However, experts opine that the rentals in Sky City Mall are up to ₹1,000 per sq ft. The lower rental in this case is due to revenue sharing between Apple India and Oberoi Realty. The agreement shows that above the per-month rental amount, Apple India will share revenue of 2% with Oberoi Realty for up to 42 months and 2.5% thereafter, starting from the 43rd month. Vikas Oberoi, CMD of Oberoi Realty, said during the company's Q4FY25 meeting in April 2025 that the per-square-foot rental in Sky City Mall is between ₹400 and ₹1,000. The per sq ft rental is different in Sky City Mall for different sizes, depending on the floor. "We have rentals up to ₹1,000 a sq ft on carpet area. So, between ₹400 and ₹1,000, it's something like that. So, it all depends on who is coming in. We have got a very nice gold souk, a special area where we have got all the jewellers there. We have very high-end watches in one segment, so they are very interesting. This is literally one of the best malls I would say in the country, the way it is designed, and the feedback that we get, it's really, really nice. And these are the deals signed at Rs.1,000 carpet," Oberoi had said. The mall is part of the Oberoi Sky City project, developed by Oberoi Realty along the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Borivali East, Mumbai. Spanning a gross leasable area (GLA) of approximately 12.07 lakh sq. ft. (with a leasable carpet area of around 7.24 lakh sq. ft.), the mall is a key component of the 25-acre mixed-use development 'Sky City,' undertaken by Incline Realty Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. According to a March 2023 research report by Motilal Oswal, around 3,200 families are expected to live in the vicinity, offering easy access to the mall. Its strategic location, with connectivity to both exit points of the Metro line, is expected to boost footfall. INOX has already signed on as an anchor tenant with a 10-screen multiplex, while leasing for the remaining space is underway. The report adds that the mall is expected to stabilise by FY25 and has the potential to generate annual rentals of ₹2.5 billion. 'Sky City Mall in Borivali East is already commanding rentals of up to ₹1,000 per sq ft, highlighting the growing demand for quality retail space in the suburb,' said Chintan Vasani, partner at Wisebiz Developers, a real estate firm active in the Borivali-Dahisar belt. 'The mall is poised to compete directly with Borivali's established high streets. We're seeing a ripple effect; brands in Borivali West are already renegotiating rental rates. While this may be a short-term correction, the long-term trend is clear: retail brands will continue to expand in Borivali.' The surge in interest is also driven by rising aspirations and disposable incomes of the area's middle and upper-middle class. 'Local consumers show strong, consistent demand, with luxury watch showrooms offering pieces priced between ₹1 lakh and ₹1 crore,' Vasani added. The redevelopment of ageing buildings is also paving the way for new high streets across the city, not just in Borivali. Mira Road, which is around 30% more affordable than Borivali, currently has a larger number of retail high streets and malls, reflecting shifting demand-supply dynamics. With its expanding retail footprint, 'Brand Borivali' is fast emerging as a strong challenger to traditional retail hotspots like Andheri, Bandra, and even South Mumbai, he said. Steep slopes, location access: How Chenab railway project team tackled construction challenges
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world's highest rail bridge, Chenab railway bridge, on Friday. Behind the bridge that offers connectivity of Kashmir to the rest of India, was a construction team that faced several challenges. One of the main obstacles that they dealt with was how to reach the location surrounded by the steep slopes of Himalayas. According to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the company behind the making of the bridge, one of the key challenge was to access the bridge location and then to transport the equipments and construction material there. Initially they made use of mules and horses but over time temporary roads were made to access the site, said a spokesperson of the company. An 11- km road was constructed on the North side of the river bank and similarly a 12 km road was created on the South side. Executive Vice Chairman of Afcons, Krishnamurthy Subramanian highlighted the Chenab bridge as a marvel of engineering and told PTI that it is a 'symbol of India's resolve to conquer most formidable challenges with ingenuity and courage.' To make this project a reality, the company used world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialised heavy machinery as tools. Further, consolidation grouting was used to make the arch foundation of the slopes of Himalayas sturdy. According to the company, cantilever techniques was used for the erection of the arch from both sides. One of the key moment of triumph came when ' a single majestic arch approaching steadily from both banks met at the crown," in April 2021, said the company. To construct a viaduct, a structure designed to make roads and railways over rivers, was also a unique challenge. The company spokes person said, "There were multiple transition areas. Keeping this in mind, the launching sequence was meticulously planned in four sections," the spokesperson. Another key milestone was that for the first time in the Indian Railways' history, a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) was set up to ensure the quality of the project. Chenab bridge: How project team navigated through steep slopes on horses and mules
KATRA: To realise the vision of travelling from "Kashmir to Kanyakumari" by rail, the project team behind the construction of the Chenab bridge faced several challenges. Among them was how to reach the location surrounded by the steep slopes of the Himalayas. The team had only one option -- horses and mules. According to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the top infrastructure company that constructed the bridge, one of the main and earliest challenges was access to the bridge location, to transport equipment and construction materials. "Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location. Slowly over a period, temporary roads were created and access was made available to the site," a spokesperson from the company said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the iconic Chenab Bridge, Anji Rail Bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project and flagged off Vande Bharat trains, connecting Katra to Srinagar. The spokesperson added that eventually, on the North side of the river bank, an 11-km road was constructed and a 12-km road on the South side. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Vice Chairman, Afcons, said the Chenab Railway Bridge is more than just a marvel of engineering. "It is a symbol of India's resolve to conquer the most formidable challenges with ingenuity and courage," he told PTI. The company used the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialised heavy machinery as tools for this ambitious project. "The ancient and steep slopes of the Himalayas were tamed using massive consolidation grouting, making them sturdy for the colossal arch foundations," the company said, highlighting challenges it faced. "With the foundations set, the erection of the arch from both sides was planned by the cantilever construction technique. The first big moment of triumph came on April 5, 2021, when a single majestic arch approaching steadily from both banks met at the crown," it added. "The viaduct construction was another unique challenge. There were multiple transition areas. Keeping this in mind, the launching sequence was meticulously planned in four sections," the spokesperson said. Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy Managing Director, Afcons, told PTI that for the first time in Indian Railways, incremental launching was done on a transition curve and a longitudinal gradient, both occurring at the same location, for the deck launching of the viaduct portion of the Chenab Bridge. S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons, "For Afcons, it represents our unwavering commitment to nation-building and our ability to reimagine infrastructure in the toughest terrains. This bridge will inspire generations of engineers and stands as a tribute to the power of Indian engineering and teamwork." For the first time in the Indian Railways' history, a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) was set up to ensure that quality was being monitored at every stage of the project. Situated at a height of 359 metres above the river, the Chenab bridge is 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab river. After inaugurating the Chenab bridge, PM Modi walked on it holding the Tricolour high. He travelled in a rail engine coach to reach the spot.
