Glow Up's Rahual: 'Make-up helps me connect to my Indian heritage'

BBC News14-05-2025
A make-up artist from Birmingham is hoping to win the latest season of the reality competition Glow Up by using his Indian heritage as inspiration. Rahual Das is among 10 contestants on the BBC Three programme battling to become the country's next make-up star.Although he is proud to be the first British Indian man on the show, the 31-year-old from Handsworth Wood said he grew up with some backlash from his community. "I experienced a little bit of oppression or feeling like I wasn't fitting into societal norms or standards," he said. "A lot of that did transmute into limiting me and stalling my journey."
Now Das, who travels the world as part of his job, often goes to India for projects and has learnt more about his ancestral homeland."A lot of ancient history fuels my artistry and how I apply my techniques," he said. "The kings and maharajas were wearing eyeliner before it was even a thing."He said Indian culture inspired him as an artist. "For me it was the magic I felt through the art of make-up and also the connection it gave me to my ancestry and to my heritage," he explained. On the first episode of Glow Up, Das also spoke about the importance of spirituality in his culture, which influenced his make-up look called The Light Within. While abroad, he saw men were the lead make-up artists behind the scenes in Bollywood and asked himself: "Why has that been lost in translation in Britain?""We can count on our hands how many South Asian make-up artists there are and male make-up artists," he said.
To try and help improve representation in the industry, Das recently spoke to more than 150 students at a BBC outreach event at University College Birmingham. Seeing him there was particularly inspiring for 22-year-old Quinn Fishwick, who added: "The industry is more female-focused and more space is needed for men."Fishwick's classmate Siyon Stanley Carvalho, 21, said she had concerns over a lack of diversity in the industry as she starts her make-up career. She added: "I need to make sure that I'm strong in what I can do."I can only put in the work and hope that other people see how determined I am and how much I love what I do."Black British supermodel and Glow up presenter Leomie Anderson was also at the event and has previously been vocal about the need for more diversity."The industry has come along leaps and bounds," she said. "But there's still a long way to go when it comes to representation both in front and behind of the camera."
For Das, while it is important to make space for South Asian men, he is also looking toward a future beyond this."It's about breaking the word minority and making it something that's just a standardised norm," he said.
Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star is on BBC Three at 20:00 on Wednesdays and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Six great reads: Keir Starmer's human rights record, Jamie Lee Curtis on cosmetic surgery and the best of Euro 25

'Why is Labour's record to date on human rights – the one thing you might expect a Starmer-led government to be rock solid on – so mixed?' asks Daniel Trilling in this comprehensive long read. Due to Keir Starmer's background as a distinguished human rights lawyer, his supporters hoped that he would restore the UK's commitment to international law. Unfortunately, he is being blocked by a powerful man who has conflated protest with terrorism and called for musicians whose views he dislikes to be dropped from festival bills. That man is also named Keir Starmer. Over the past six months, Trilling has spoken to two dozen Labour insiders, former colleagues of the prime minister and leading human rights advocates in an attempt to pin down the shapeshifting PM. Read more 'At 66, I get to be a boss,' says Jamie Lee Curtis. That is very much the vibe of this interview, in which the actor shows up 'aggressively early' to the Zoom chat, opens up about her experience with addiction, and uses – and staunchly defends – the word 'genocide' to describe the impact that cosmetic surgery has had on a generation of women. Emma Brockes speaks to Curtis before the forthcoming sequel to Freaky Friday, which sees the actor reuniting with Lindsay Lohan in the mother-daughter body-swap comedy ('I felt tremendous maternal care for Lindsay after the first movie, and continued to feel that') – but their chat ends up becoming about so much more. What happens when the shared spaces of your so-called community are sun-drenched cafes and boutique fitness studios? What does it mean to never volunteer, or spend time with an elderly person, to rarely take public transport, or read the local news?' It's easy to romanticise the life of a digital nomad: swapping the office for a beachside cafe; living in a flat far more spacious than the ones available back home; being eternally drenched in the southern European sun. But this thoughtful piece by Alex Holder, who moved from London to Lisbon, reveals the cracks in this fantasy. 'Maybe,' she wonders, 'it's time to move and make room for someone else.' Zohran Mamdani's record-setting success in New York's June mayoral primary was bolstered by 60,000 volunteers knocking on 1.6m doors across the city – a vast effort, Dharna Noor writes, made possible by New York's DSA field team. In this piece, Noor tracks the rise of an organisation that is increasingly shaping American politics – and considers whether it's ready for a face-off with the Democratic establishment. Dame Kelly Holmes cuts a stylish figure in a rainbow top and black leather shorts as she joins girlfriend Louise Cullen at Brighton Pride

Kelly Holmes cut a stylish figure as she stepped out with her girlfriend, Louise Cullen, at the Brighton i360 and Attitude Pride Party on Saturday. The retired Olympic champion, 55, proudly sported a rainbow halterneck top and black leather shorts as she sweetly wrapped an arm around Louise. She added height to her frame with chunky black leather platform boots and accessorised with retro multicoloured sunglasses. Massage therapist Louise looked effortlessly cool in a Pride T-shirt, teamed with a black denim mini skirt, layered over cropped leggings. She completed the look with a chunky blue trainer on one foot and sported a surgical boot on the other, suggesting she's on the mend from a recent foot injury. The couple, who met during the Covid pandemic through an online fitness community, looked as loved-up as ever during the outing. They made their first red carpet appearance in 2023 and Kelly gushed that she hoped their relationship was 'forever'. Louise runs a sports massage business and is as fanatical about fitness as her GB Olympian partner. Kelly publicly came out as gay in June 2022, admitting she had kept her sexuality a secret for many years due to the ban on homosexuality in the military until 2000. The couple led the celebrity arrivals at 2025 Brighton Pride, which was also attended by the likes of Celebrity Big Brother winner Danny Beard, TV judge Robert Rinder, drag queen Ella Vaday, and swimmer Michael Gunning. Danny, 33, made a statement in a white T-shirt printed with the words 'Protect scouse dolls' - referencing the phrase 'protect the dolls', popularised by Conner Ives to support transgender women, which has been sported on a T-shirt by Pedro Pascal. Disco legends Sister Sledge took to the stage to deliver an unforgettable performance, while Mariah Carey is also set to headline. Lead singer Kathy Sledge, 66, dazzled in a pink asymmetric sequin-embellished top and a baby pink mini skirt, finishing the look with diamond drop earrings and a stack of sparkling bracelets. She was joined by a troupe of glamorous backing singers as they belted out the group's greatest hits, much to the delight of VIP guests. Drag royalty Ella Vaday, 36, channelled pop nostalgia in a sleeveless white Britney Spears tee, while Michael Gunning, 31, turned heads in a sleek black bodysuit featuring an asymmetric mesh panel Partygoers were treated to a one-of-a-kind view of the UK's most iconic Pride Parade - 450ft above the ground in the Brighton i360 pod. Guests gathered from 10:30am for drinks, including Bolney sparkling wine, Aperol Spritz, and a range of gin, vodka, and whiskey cocktails. Big Zuu's Drip water kept everyone hydrated, while bacon rolls were passed around to keep spirits high. At 11:15am, a drag queen appeared atop the i360 pod, wowing crowds below with a medley of Pride anthems, ending with Defying Gravity as the pod rose dramatically into the sky. By noon, guests were inside the pod, taking in panoramic views and soaking up the incredible energy of Brighton Pride. The event was hosted by former Dragons Den star Sarah, the new owner of Brighton i360, who was supported on the day by close friend Robert.
