Honda-backed Helm.ai unveils vision system for self-driving cars
Honda Motor-backed Helm.ai on Thursday unveiled its camera-based system to interpret urban environments, dubbed Helm.ai Vision, and said it was in talks with other automakers to deploy its self-driving technology in mass-market vehicles.
Helm.ai is working with the Japanese automaker to integrate its technology in the upcoming 2026 Honda Zero series of electric vehicles, which will allow users to drive hands-free and take their eyes off the road.
'We're definitely in talks with many OEMs and we're on track for deploying our technology in production,' Helm.ai CEO and founder Vladislav Voroninski told Reuters.
'Our business model is essentially licensing this kind of software and also foundation model software to the automakers.'
The California-based startup's vision-first approach aligns with Elon Musk's Tesla, which also relies on camera-based systems as alternate sensors such as lidar and radar can increase costs.
However, Voroninski said while Helm.ai has foundation models that work with other sensors, its primary offering remains vision-focused.
Industry experts say other sensors are critical to safety as they can act as backup for cameras, which are known to underperform in low-visibility conditions.
Robotaxi companies such as Alphabet's Waymo and May Mobility use a combination of radar, lidar and cameras to perceive their surroundings.
Helm.ai has raised $102 million to date and counts Goodyear Ventures, Korean auto parts maker Sungwoo HiTech and Amplo among its investors.
Helm.ai Vision combines images from multiple cameras to create a bird's-eye view map, which helps improve the vehicle's planning and control systems, the company said.
The system is optimized for several hardware platforms made by the likes of Nvidia and Qualcomm.
This enables automakers to incorporate Helm.ai Vision into their existing vehicle systems, which include their own technologies for predicting and planning vehicle movements.

SastaSundar to invest Rs 150 crore in 2 yrs, aims turnaround in FY26
SastaSundar Ventures Ltd is in the process of investing Rs 150 crore over the next two years to strengthen its digital healthcare platform and warehousing infrastructure to make a turnaround and return to profit in FY'26, a company official said on Thursday. The investment will largely be funded through a Rs 145-crore capital pool, created from the Flipkart Health exit settlement and internal treasury income. The Kolkata-based online pharmacy ended its partnership with Flipkart Health earlier this year and relaunched its B2C platform under its own brand. "We are aiming to return to net profit in the current fiscal through strategic initiatives. We are focusing on the execution of these and capital-efficient growth to recover the company from a Rs 122 crore net loss in FY'25. "Out of the Rs 150 crore, about Rs 40 crore was deployed in FY'25, and the remaining Rs 110 crore will be invested in FY'26 and FY'27," SastaSundar Chairman B L Mittal told PTI. To tap into the rising demand for affordable medication, SastaSundar has launched JITO, a curated generics medicine channel under its main brand. "We expect to invest nearly Rs 25 crore to develop the JITO platform to push retail sales," Mittal said. The concept of quality-verified generic substitutes is gaining popularity, offering customers significant discounts compared to branded prescription drugs. With a Rs 50-crore investment planned in technology and AI-driven healthcare tools, the company is targeting to double its B2C business in FY'26, from Rs 144 crore achieved in FY'25. A major portion of this investment will go towards hiring tech and AI talent to build digital consultation, diagnostics, and personal health profiling tools, Mittal recently informed investors in a conference call. On the distribution side, 250 Health Buddies are currently active post the Flipkart exit, and the company expects this number to rise to around 400 by the end of FY'26, he said. On the B2B front, RetailerShakti, which supplies to pharmacies, delivered a strong performance with revenue nearly doubling to Rs 941 crore in FY'25, he said. The company is targeting EBITDA breakeven for RetailerShakti in the last quarter of FY'26. By FY'30, SastaSundar aims to achieve a blended EBITDA margin of 4-5 per cent.

Foreign automakers' market share in China projected to shrink further
Despite persistent competitive pressures, the nation's aggressive car price war is expected to evolve, rather than abate Bloomberg The picture for foreign automakers in China doesn't get any rosier with new research from consultant AlixPartners showing local brands' dominance will climb to as high as 76 per cent by 2030 as the market share of Japanese, European and US companies dwindles. And despite persistent competitive pressures, the nation's aggressive car price war is expected to evolve, rather than abate. Instead of overt price reductions, automakers will increasingly implement 'hidden' buyer sweeteners, the report said, like insurance subsidies, offering zero-interest financing or packing models with enhanced driver-assistance features at no extra cost. That has been the play book of late from market leader BYD Co., which in February announced that its so-called 'God's Eye' advanced driver assistance system would be standardized across 21 models, including budget vehicles. BYD has also led the latest round of discounting, in late May offering reductions of as much as 34 per cent on 22 of its electric and plug-in hybrid models. China's automotive industry, once reliant on foreign joint ventures, has undergone a rapid transformation driven in part by significant government support and investment in new energy vehicles. As local brands have grown, foreign automakers have been pushed sideways. In recent years, confronted with slowing domestic growth and persistent overcapacity issues, China's carmakers have prioritized global expansion. In Europe, Chinese automotive brands are now on track to capture a 10 per cent share of the market by 2030, adding an estimated 800,000 in unit sales that could fundamentally reshape the continent's car industry, AlixPartners said. In China meanwhile, battery electric cars are forecast to make up 50 per cent of the market by 2030 with combustion engine cars' share going from half currently to around 19 per cent, according to the report.
