Matthew Perry's tragic fear that destroyed his love life before addiction spiral

Daily Mirror14-05-2025

As Erik Fleming is sentenced in relation to the tragic death of Matthew Perry, the Mirror takes a look at the Friends icon's complicated love life, including his sad reason for never marrying
On May 17, 2001, Friends fans all over the world cheered as commitment-phobe Chandler Bing tied the knot with his opposites-attract soulmate, Monica Gellar.
The season seven finale of the wildly popular sitcom ended on a fairytale note. Sadly, as much as he longed for love, Chandler actor Matthew Perry, who passed away on October 28, 2023, never found his Monica.

Matthew was just 54 years old when he died in the hot tub of his LA home. His death was ruled as an accident from the 'acute effects of ketamine', and followed many years of addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Now, Erik Fleming, one of the five people charged in relation to Matthew 's death, is due to be sentenced. Fleming, 54, pleaded guilty in August to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine as well as one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. He had initially been due for sentencing on October 30, but this date was ultimately delayed.
At the time of his death, it's believed Matthew had been single and was focusing his efforts on becoming sober. He had, however, been connected to many glamorous women over the years, and had endured a fair few highs and lows in his pursuit of love...
Jennifer Aniston
From the moment he met her, Matthew admitted he was smitten. "I was immediately taken by her (how could I not be?) and liked her, and I got the sense she was intrigued too - maybe it was going to be something," he wrote in his recent autobiography, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
And when he landed the Friends gig, Jen was the first person he called - although he quickly realised his eagerness had been a mistake. "I could feel ice forming through the phone," he wrote. "Looking back, it was clear that this made her think I liked her too much or in the wrong kind of way."
But instead of slinking away, embarrassed, Matthew went all in and continued to ask her for a date. "I only compounded the error by then asking her out," he continued. "[Jennifer] declined (which made it very difficult to actually go out with her), but said that she'd love to be friends with me, and I compounded the compound by blurting, 'We can't be friends!'"

The two actors later sat down for their first Friends table read in 1994, and unfortunately for Matt, his feelings continued to linger once filming started, making their conversations 'awkward' as he 'crushed badly' on his co-star. "I'd ask myself, how long can I look at her? Is three seconds too long?"
But by the time Jennifer started dating Brad Pitt in 1998, Matthew said he had "long since gotten over" her and was able to speak to her normally. He said that the success of the show, coupled with her 'deafening lack of interest', eventually cured him and they became lasting friends.

Meanwhile, he also revealed that it was Jennifer who confronted him about his drinking while filming Friends, something he was eternally grateful for, as it forced him to face the situation, a move that undoubtedly saved his life.
The actor, who once 'nearly' died from heavy drug use, said his co-star asked him outright about his scary drug and alcohol use at the height of his career and praised her for being a good friend. Matthew recalled how Jennifer told him, "We know you're drinking". "Imagine how scary a moment that was," he said. "She was the one who reached out the most, you know. I'm really grateful to her for that."
Julia Roberts

In his autobiography, Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing, Matthew revealed how he and Pretty Woman actress Julia Roberts had a three-month relationship. The Friends star detailed the fiery fling and says it began after Julia was asked to appear as guest character Susie Moss during one episode in 1995.
Matthew said he sent Julia 'three dozen red roses' after being told by producers that Julia would take part in the show, only if it involved his character. He said, following a five-hour phone call, Julia turned up at his door and "a relationship began". Just three months later, Matthew says he dumped the Hollywood star over fears he was "certain she was going to break up with [him]".
Failed engagement

Matthew was engaged to literary manager Molly Hurwitz in 2020. Sharing his joy with People magazine, Matthew hailed her as "the greatest woman on the face of the planet." "I decided to get engaged," he said, "Luckily, I happened to be dating the greatest woman on the face of the planet at this time." Sadly, they split just seven months later. In a statement released to People, the Friends star said: "Sometimes things just don't work out, and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best."
Yasmine Bleeth
On the show, Matthew's character, Chandler Bing, was famously a huge fan of Baywatch, and off-screen, he is said to have dated one of the programme's stars, Yasmine Bleeth. According to Page Six, they were together after his fling with Julia in 1996. Two years later, he was linked to his Three to Tango co-star Neve Campbell, while his first serious relationship is said to have been with Bold and Beautiful soap star Maeve Quinlan.

Rachel Dunn
Matthew dated professional volleyball player Rachel Dunn for two years, and they were an item when Friends reached its emotional conclusion in 2004. He made several public appearances with the former fashion student and once told the Evening Standard that she had changed his outlook on life.

"With Rachel in my life, I know that I can be very committed and not some selfish guy who just wants to hang out with friends. I want to spend time with my girlfriend and explore what it means to have a much closer relationship than I've previously had time for," he said.
Lizzy Caplan
Matthew and Mean Girls star Lizzie were together for six years. They started dating in 2006 and flew largely under the radar. But rumours of trouble were rife by 2013 when Lizzie would "not even entertain any questions relating to her partner" during an interview, and covered her ears at the mention of his name.

"I can stand right next to paparazzi, and I do that sometimes. I'm close with people who are far more famous, and they know how to avoid attention," she cryptically said. It later emerged they had split a year earlier.
Why did he never marry?
Matthew once shared the heartbreaking reason he never settled down, admitting he was plagued by intrusive thoughts and fears whenever he was involved with someone. "I break up with them because I'm deathly afraid that they will find out that I'm not enough, that I don't matter, and that I'm too needy, and they'll break up with me," he told GQ magazine ahead of the release of his autobiography.
Determined to stay sober, he explained that he couldn't risk putting his emotions on the line as a split would "annihilate me and I'll have to take drugs and that will kill me. That's why I break up with these wonderful women that have crossed my path," he added.

Johnny Vegas vows to 'kickstart debate' as he shares emotional insight to life

The comedy star of Benidorm and Still Open All Hours shows a whole new side as he tackles major art challenge while getting to grips with an ADHD diagnosis Johnny Vegas will be seen getting to grips with his recent ADHD diagnosis in a new Channel 4 two-parter in which he returns to his first love of art. The comedian, actor and trained potter has signed up to produce a piece of public art for his hometown of St Helens in Merseyside, and the cameras have followed him as he takes on the biggest artistic challenge of his career. ‌ A show source said: 'What starts as a creative endeavour turns into a journey of self-discovery when Johnny receives a diagnosis of ADHD. Though the original artistic vision falters, the documentary uncovers a silver lining—an honest and heartfelt conversation about mental health and understanding yourself.' ‌ Johnny, 54, told the Mirror: 'I used to sit at a potter's wheel on stage. People thought it was a gimmick, but I actually started out as a dedicated wannabe ceramicist. Art was my educational saviour. "Over years of witnessing what felt like an ongoing decline in educational commitment to the very same arts, I felt it was time I threw my hat back into the ring. To kickstart a debate about culture in general, whilst giving something of a visual symbol of gratitude back to my honestly beloved town.' He revealed that he'd been diagnosed with ADHD in 2023, saying at the time that it "answers a lot of questions about behavioural issues in the past'. He added: "In some respects, you can go back and look at it with regret, but I've had a bit of a charmed life, so it's no regrets," he said. "I know now, and it helps you make changes, I suppose, as you want to get more responsible later in life. I don't see it as defining me.' Programme-maker Adeel Amini, of Rumpus Media, said that fans would love seeing Johnny returning to his roots. 'Johnny tackles art and creativity with his trademark wit and humour, as well as a great deal of honesty and emotion, showing us a brand new side to one of Britain's best-loved figures.' C4 specialist factual boss Shaminder Nahal says: 'This series brings to life the power of art for everyone – how it can soothe, help, energise and inspire. Beautifully filmed over several years, the series showcases Johnny's unique humour, heart and passion – uncovering the intricacies and demands of artistic process along the way. It's an enlightening, eye-opening and emotional journey.' It is thought that as many as one in 20 UK adults could have the condition, but many cases are unidentified. Other celebrities who have been diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood include presenters Ant McPartlin and Richard Bacon, comedian Rory Bremner and TV presenter Sue Perkins.

The $487 Million Film That Ended A Hollywood Marriage - And That $80 Million Divorcement Settlement

As of 10 June, it is 20 years since the film that divided Hollywood first hit cinemas. Before Mr & Mrs Smith , Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were the golden couple of the entertainment industry, with Pitt the pin up heartthrob and Aniston, 'Rachel from Friends', ever the girl next door. Angelina Jolie, meanwhile, was a maverick action film star who was covered in tattoos, married to Billy Bob Thornton who was 20 years her senior, and famously kissed her own brother on stage at the Oscars. It's almost impossible to cast your mind back to those days given how Mr & Mrs Smith reshaped the cultural landscape. Not because of its gripping action sequences or its plot – it's actually a distinctly average film with a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – but because it marked the end of Pitt and Aniston's marriage and the start of 'Brangelina'. Tabloid fodder at its finest, what was already an uncomfortable situation for the three actors was made worse by the frenzied rivalry whipped up by the media. 'Team Aniston' and 'Team Jolie' t-shirts swept the nation and were famously worn famous faces like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, tell-all interviews were offered and accepted on both sides, and an unrelenting stream of commentary followed – and in many ways still does. Despite rumours that Pitt and Jolie had an affair on the set of the film, they have always maintained that their relationship did not start until after Aniston filed for divorce in January 2005. They did, however, later admit that they developed feelings for each other while working together. 'It took until the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realise that it might mean something more than we'd earlier allowed ourselves to believe,' Jolie told The New York Post in 2006. 'And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration.' When Aniston announced that she and Pitt were separating after five years of marriage, she cited irreconcilable differences and said, 'our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media' and that they remained 'committed and caring friends'. Of course, all that stood to change, at least in the court of public opinion, when Pitt and Jolie's romance was confirmed. First via viral pictures of them holidaying together in Kenya and then in July 2005 through their extensive W magazine spread titled, 'Domestic Bliss'. Something that, understandably, riled up Team Aniston. The following September, Aniston spoke out about her divorce for the first time, telling Vanity Fair : 'There are many stages of grief. It's sad, something coming to an end. It cracks you open.' Later adding, 'I would much rather everyone move on. I am not defined by this relationship. I am not defined by the part [the media is] making me play in the triangle.' In January 2006, Jolie and Pitt announced they were expecting a child together, six months after they adopted their daughter Zahara from Ethiopia. Four more children followed to form a total of six and all were present when the couple got married at their co-owned French Estate, Chateau Miraval, in 2014. In 2016, two years after their wedding, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt citing irreconcilable differences after a fateful private plane journey from France to LA. In 2022, Jolie filed court papers accusing Pitt of drunkenly attacking her and their children during the aforementioned flight, prompting her to file for divorce. She alleges that he grabbed her by the head and verbally abused and poured alcohol on his family during the journey. Pitt has always denied the allegations and was cleared of wrongdoing following an FBI investigation at the time. Nevertheless, the separation marked the start of an eight-year divorce battle that saw Pitt and Jolie in disputes over both the custody of their minor children and their French winery. The latter is still ongoing. Pitt and Jolie are finally divorced, but they are set to meet each other in court next year. They will both be subjected to depositions that may reveal additional personal details about their marriage, including the alleged 'years of abuse' Jolie claims Pitt subjected her to. The trial will also settle the rightful ownership of Jolie's 50% shares of Chateau Miraval, which Jolie sold shortly after filing for divorce. Pitt claims the sale was carried out without permission while Jolie alleges that she attempted to sell her shares to Pitt in the first instance but refused after he asked her to sign a $8.5m NDA to cover up said 'years of abuse'. As for the state of their once picture-perfect family, it similarly hangs in the balance. All six of Pitt and Jolie's children seem to have taken a marked stance with their mother, with several of them dropping 'Pitt' from their surnames. In 2023, their son Pax took to Instagram on Father's Day to share his thoughts about the F1 actor. 'You will never understand the damage you have done to my family because you are incapable of doing so,' he wrote. 'You have made the lives of those closest to me a constant hell. […] The truth will come to light someday.' Even so, anyone following the saga would assume Pitt and Jolie are at least somewhat relieved to no longer be legally married. However, in a recent interview with GQ to promote his upcoming film F1 , which is out on 27 June, Pitt seemed indifferent. 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing,' he responded when asked if he was relieved that the divorce was behind him. 'Just something coming to fruition, legally.' The Jolie-Pitt clan's dirty laundry is set to air in court in 2026, but Jolie's lawyers have insisted she never wanted their case to go to trial. 'Angelina never wanted any of this,' her attorney Paul Murphy said after a judge ruled that Pitt must turn over documents and communications that Jolie claims will prove he covered up alleged domestic violence. 'She never pressed charges, she left all their properties, and she is the one who tried to sell him the business in the first place. […] She wants this to end, the children want this to end, and Mr. Pitt should focus on healing their family, not pursuing lawsuits.' The legacy of Mr & Mrs Smith has, in many ways, returned to its origins – a toxic, highly-publicised feud with real lives and relationships at the centre. Sadly, this is a story that has not ended well for anyone. As for the 'truth', all eyes will be on the courtroom next year. Loose Women star says she 'always loathed it' as she slams ITV show over one major issue

One Loose Women icon has called out ITV bosses for enforcing one rule during her lengthy stint on the show which used to make her 'shudder'. Loose Women star Carol McGiffin has slammed ITV bosses for their approach to styling the programme's presenters. The 64-year-old expressed how she did not agree with the enforced dress codes and claimed that the presenters transitioned from wearing what they wanted, to being instructed on what to wear for coordination. She also voiced concerns regarding the amount of clothing waste, alleging that some garments were thrown away even if they'd only been worn once. Carol previously had two stints on Loose Women, first from 2000 until 2013, and then again from 2018 until 2023. In an article for Best UK, she said: "I did Loose Women for almost 20 years and the mandated dress codes used to exhaust me. ‌ "We went from wearing our own clothes to being bought stuff to adhere to ludicrous wardrobe policies like 'no arms on show', presumably because our ageing biceps were morphing into bingo wings. I always loathed being 'dressed' or 'styled' as they preferred to call it. ‌ "You always had to be coordinated up to the eyeballs in nice slacks, wrap dresses or boiler suits. "It used to make me shudder, nearly as much as the insane amount of waste on unimaginable amounts of clothes that had mostly only been worn once". This is not the first time Carol has spoken negatively about Loose Women in recent years, the Mirror reports. In a conversation with Woman's Own last year, she opened up on her reasons for leaving and her feelings regarding her career move. ‌ She said: "I don't regret leaving, I don't fit in there anymore." Her bold remarks mirror a past statement she made to OK! magazine while speaking about the show. ‌ She previously said: "Someone, somewhere will be offended by absolutely everything. "I'd rather not be on a show that panders to that. It's boring – and I won't be told what I can or can't say." While she has now parted ways with the show, and has little good to say about her former ITV role, Carol remains in touch with some of her former co-stars. ‌ Although she shares warmer relationships with a select handful of them. She explained: "I'm still very good friends with a lot of the Loose ladies... Denise Welch popped down here with Lincoln [Townley, her husband] last year and we met them for lunch. "I've seen Kaye [Adams], Jane [Moore] and Nadia [Sawalha] a few times." Carol addressed those she does no longer speak to, saying: "Some, I have nothing in common with. "As I said to them, 'You're not friends, you're just people I work with, who I really like.' Which horrified them."
