After Op Sindoor, Navy boosts firepower with indigenous anti-aircraft gun barrels
After being aggressively deployed during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Navy continues to enhance its combat readiness while accelerating its Atmanirbhar Bharat agenda. From conducting large-scale maritime drills with the UK's Royal Navy in the Northern Arabian Sea to expanding its indigenous arsenal, the Navy is making significant strides toward self-reliance.The latest milestone in this push is the indigenous production of anti-aircraft gun barrels for the Navy's frontline weapon, the Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM). advertisement
For the first time, these barrels are being manufactured at the Field Gun Factory in Kanpur, replacing those previously imported and produced under license from Italian defence firm OTO Melara at BHEL Haridwar. Two barrels have already been delivered to the Navy, with all current and future warships set to receive the Kanpur-made versions. Developed over three years by a team of 12 engineers, the indigenous barrels are expected to reduce costs and eliminate dependency on foreign suppliers. The SRGM is a high-speed, medium-calibre naval gun system capable of firing 120 rounds per minute. With a barrel length of 4,588 mm, it fires 76mm shells and can engage targets, including fast-moving aircraft and missiles, up to 15 km away. Its strength lies in its rapid rate of fire and precision, making it ideal for multi-target scenarios in modern naval warfare. The Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 2,956.89 crore deal with BHEL Haridwar for 16 upgraded SRGM systems and associated components, further reinforcing the Navy's operational capabilities.Tune InMust Watch

Fidelity marks up Lenskart to $6.1 bn ahead of planned $10 bn IPO
US financial services major Fidelity has reportedly increased its estimated valuation of eyewear startup Lenskart to $6.1 billion, according to its latest monthly portfolio disclosure. The move comes as Lenskart gears up for an initial public offering (IPO), with plans to raise up to $1 billion at a targeted valuation of $10 billion. The company reportedly took a key step toward that goal recently by converting its parent entity from a private limited to a public limited company. The revision in valuation, based on data as of 30 April, reflects a modest uptick from the $5.6 billion valuation the investment firm assigned to the company in November. In June 2024, Lenskart raised $200 million in secondary investment from Singapore's state-owned investment firm Temasek and Fidelity. The Peyush Bansal-led company was valued at about $5 billion in that round. The firm was last valued at $4.5 billion during a $100 million funding round in June 2023. Lenskart continues to deepen its penetration in India while rapidly scaling its international presence in Asia. With a unique click-and-mortar business model, it is disrupting the eyewear industry by offering an omni-channel customer experience across online platforms, mobile applications and physical stores. The company now has over 2,500 stores, of which 2,000 are in India. Globally and in India, Delhi-based Lenskart competes with players such as Titan Eyeplus, Specsmakers, Vision Express, Warby Parker and Italian eyewear conglomerate Luxottica Group. Lenskart's revenue from operations rose by 43 per cent to ₹5,427.7 crore in FY24 from ₹3,788 crore in FY23. The firm generates revenue by selling eyewear frames, lenses, goggles, and offering additional services such as eye check-ups. Due to cost-effective management, Lenskart reduced its losses by 84 per cent to ₹10 crore in FY24 from ₹63 crore in FY23.

‘Op-Sindoor' proved indigenous innovation is India's strongest shield
Hyderabad: Operation Sindoor proved that indigenous innovation is India's strongest shield. Homegrown drones, equipped with inbuilt detectors, jammers, and radars, and without a single imported component, successfully neutralised enemy drone threats, Ashok Atluri, Co-Chair of FICCI's National Defence & Homeland Security Committee, said on Friday. Atluri, who is also the chairman & managing director of Hyderabad-based Zen Technologies, said R&D is not a luxury but a necessity, especially for MSMEs, in his inaugural address at FICCI's MSME Xcelerate 2025. "While day-to-day operations may feel all-consuming, ignoring R&D risks irrelevance. Identifying the right area and committing focus can lead to transformative breakthroughs. To thrive globally, India must innovate for the world, not just for local markets. R&D can propel India to global leadership, and funding is no longer a barrier in India," he said. V Suresh Babu, zonal head, National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), NSIC-registered MSMEs get several benefits, including exemption from tender fees and security deposits, making it easier to participate in govt tenders. "Under the public procurement policy, it's mandatory for PSUs to source at least 25% of their requirements from MSMEs. It's a golden opportunity MSMEs must leverage. NSIC also supports MSMEs in showcasing their offerings through exhibitions, with up to 80% subsidy provided for domestic participation," he said. FICCI's Telangana State Council Chairman VV Rama Raju said though MSMEs are the lifeblood of the Indian economy with a 30% contribution to the GDP, they face several challenges in today's rapidly evolving economic environment.
