Australian Army helicopter damaged in 'hard landing' during Talisman Sabre exercise in the NT
A defence spokesperson said the Tiger helicopter experienced a "hard landing" on Wednesday evening while participating in Exercise Talisman Sabre near Timber Creek, about 300 kilometres south-west of Katherine.
"The two aircrew aboard were unharmed and able to exit the helicopter safely," they said.
The spokesperson said the 1st Aviation Regiment had "implemented a pause on unit flying operations" after the incident but "other rotary wing support to the exercise will continue".
They said the Defence Flight Safety Bureau had deployed a team to the Northern Territory to start an "independent aviation investigation of the incident".
Exercise Talisman Sabre involves 30,000 military personnel from 19 nations and is the largest combined training activity between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and United States military.
The biennial war games involve live firing and combat simulations across land, sea and air.
The ADF permanently grounded its fleet of Taipan helicopters after a fatal crash during the exercise two years ago which killed Captain Danniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Warrant Officer Class 2 Joseph "Phillip" Laycock and Corporal Alexander Naggs.
A defence investigation into the crash later found evasive action taken by the pilot avoided more lives being lost.
An ADF spokesperson told the ABC earlier this month both Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters would be used by the army during this year's exercise.
Australian personnel were also expected to fly in three Taipans operated by New Zealand's Defence Force as part of the exercise when it formally commenced last weekend.
"The Australian Army will deploy rotary-wing capabilities from the Battlefield Aviation Program, including the CH-47F Chinook and UH-60M Black Hawks to support movement of troops and equipment across the battlefield," they said.
The ABC also confirmed the 1st Regiment's Tiger helicopters would provide armed reconnaissance support during the large-scale war drills.

A 48-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a WA father who was found with serious injuries lying next to his car on Good Friday. Armed thugs filmed on camera during violent Gladstone Park home invasion
Armed thugs who shot, stabbed and assaulted a resident during a violent home invasion has been captured on camera. Resident Kemal Akbulut, 60, confronted multiple offenders who broke into his home on Trentham Dr in Gladstone Park about 1.25am on July 24. A group of four men armed with weapons, knives and guns assaulted and stabbed Mr Akbulut and threatened his cousin Birsel Akbulut, 57, with a gun. Shocking footage from the incident shows one of the thugs use a hammer to bash Mr Akbulut who can be heard screaming through the ordeal. One of the offenders points a gun at the victim and asks, 'Where's the money?' Mr Akbulut can be heard saying, 'I'll give you whatever you want.' Another man repeatedly stabs the victim while another offender points a gun at him and films it on his mobile phone. A police spokesman said the offenders allegedly fired a shot inside the home. 'The 60-year-old man sustained serious injuries consistent with a gun shot wound and was transported to hospital,' a police spokesman said. 'The woman was not physically injured.' The offenders fled in a white Haval SUV. 'They remain outstanding and the investigation remains ongoing,' a police spokesman said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Search underway for four women feared washed off rocks at Lake Macquarie
Emergency services have launched an air and sea search after a group of women reportedly became stranded on rocks at Lake Macquarie on Saturday. Police were called to the area about 1.40pm, after witnesses saw four females on rocks south of Catherine Hill Bay Beach around 1pm, before the rising tide obscured them from view. Local officers, the Marine Area Command and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have been scouring the area but have not located the group. It is unclear if the women managed to reach safety. One of the females was reportedly wearing red shorts. Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.
