Vodafone Idea partners AST Spacemobile to offer satellite phone services

Telecom operator Vodafone Idea on Wednesday announced a partnership with Satcom firm AST SpaceMobile, a rival of Elon Musk-owned SpaceX, to deliver satellite services on smartphones directly.
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by smartphones, designed for commercial and government applications, Vodafone Idea said in a statement.
"Vi (Vodafone Idea) and AST SpaceMobile Inc...announced a strategic partnership to expand mobile connectivity across India's unconnected regions. AST SpaceMobile made history by placing the first-ever voice and video call from space using a standard mobile phone, a milestone that demonstrates the real-world viability of its advanced technology," the statement said.
The company did not disclose the date for the launch of the service.
Vi's competitors Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have joined hands with SpaceX to sell services of its satellite communications (satcom) arm Starlink in India.
When asked about the partnership and service launch date, a Vi spokesperson said the company will inform about material developments in due course of time.
Vodafone Idea's promoter firm Vodafone Plc has already signed a pact with AST SpaceMobile.
In April 2023, AST SpaceMobile claimed to have completed the first-ever space-based voice call to an unmodified phone, along with its partner. The space tech firm has claimed to have delivered the first-ever 4G download speed above 10 Mbps in June 2023 and the first-ever 5G voice call in September 2023.
During 2024, AST SpaceMobile secured additional strategic investment from AT&T, Verizon, Google and Vodafone, and new contract awards with the United States Government, directly and through prime contractors. The company has agreements with more than 45 mobile network operators globally.
"This partnership will bring together Vi's robust national network with AST SpaceMobile's revolutionary space-based cellular technology, which connects directly to everyday smartphones without the need for any specialised software or device support or updates," the statement said.
Vi said it will collaborate with AST SpaceMobile on the SpaceMobile Satellite System.
"This space-based cellular broadband ecosystem will be designed to expand Vi's telecom services of terrestrial connectivity, providing voice, video, data streaming, and internet access. It will encompass the design, implementation, and launch of this system, wherein AST SpaceMobile will develop, manufacture, and manage the satellite constellation and Vi will oversee terrestrial network integration, operating spectrum, and market access," the statement said.
"India, with its vast and dynamic telecom market, is the ideal place to demonstrate how our space-based cellular broadband can seamlessly complement terrestrial networks. We are not just expanding coverage; we are breaking down barriers to connectivity, enabling everyday smartphones to access 4G and 5G directly from space, AST SpaceMobile Chief Commercial Officer Chris Ivory said.
Vi and AST SpaceMobile will also collaborate to develop commercial offerings for diverse sectors, including consumer, enterprise and IoT, the statement said.
Musk-owned SpaceX is also working on similar technology to provide satellite service directly on smartphones.
Starlink, a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, has already signed pacts with Ambani's Reliance Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel to bring the US satellite internet giant's services to India. Earlier in the month, Starlink received a licence from the telecom department to provide satellite internet services in India.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended the allocation of spectrum for satcom services without auction and through an administrative route - a move opposed by telecom operators.
The government, under the Telecommunications Act 2023, has approved the allocation of spectrum for satcom services through administrative routes against a fixed fee for point-to-point communications only.

Oracle cloud to add xAI's Grok 3 model to lineup for corporate customers

Oracle said on Tuesday that its cloud computing division is working with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm xAI to offer the startup's latest AI model to business customers. Grok 3 , as the model is called, first came out February and aimed to rival the latest offerings from DeepSeek and OpenAI. Musk made the model available to paying subscribers of his X social media platform, as well as through xAI itself. Oracle will now offer Grok 3 from its data centres to corporate users who want to use the model but need their data to remain under their existing security protections with Oracle, Karan Batta, senior vice president at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure , told Reuters on Monday. Oracle also offers models from Meta, French startup Mistral and Cohere on the service, part of its overall strategy of providing versions of popular models in a way that businesses can integrate into corporate software. "Our goal here is to make sure that we can provide a portfolio of models - we don't have our own," Batta said. "That's the current strategy. We are going to be the one that offers all of them."

Air India to cut 15% of widebody international flights amid Dreamliner safety inspections

Air India said on Wednesday it will cut international operations on its widebody aircraft by 15% for the next few weeks, citing ongoing safety inspections and operational disruptions following last week's deadly crash of one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners read more Members of Indian Army's engineering arm prepare to remove the wreckage of an Air India aircraft, bound for London's Gatwick Airport, which crashed during take-off from an airport in Ahmedabad, June 14, 2025. Reuters File Air India said on Wednesday it will cut international operations on its widebody aircraft by 15% for the next few weeks, citing ongoing safety inspections and operational disruptions following last week's deadly crash of one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Authorities continue to investigate the crash of flight AI171, which killed 241 people and marked the world's deadliest aviation disaster in a decade. The airline said in a statement that inspections had been completed on 26 of its 33 Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft, and those 26 have been cleared for service. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The cuts, effective until at least mid-July, were being implemented 'to ensure stability of operations, better efficiency and minimise inconvenience to passengers,' the Tata Group-owned airline said. The remaining planes will be checked in the coming days and additional checks are also planned for its Boeing 777 fleet, Air India added. Flight AI171, bound for London's Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing all but one on board and about 30 people on the ground. Earlier on Wednesday, Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the flight that crashed had a clean engine history. In an interview with Indian broadcaster Times Now, Chandrasekaran said Air India flight 171's right engine was new and installed in March 2025, and that the left engine was last serviced in 2023. The Dreamliner was fitted with GE Aerospace's GEnx engines. Air India also cited geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and 'night curfews in many European and East Asian airspaces' as contributing factors behind flight cancellations, which have totaled 83 over the past six days.

Reliance Consumer to pour ₹8,000 crore into soft drinks business

New Delhi: Reliance will invest up to Rs 8,000 crore on capacity expansion of Campa and other beverage brands in its portfolio over the next 12-15 months, people directly aware of the development said. Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL) is adding nearly 10-12 new greenfield and co-packing plants to step up its challenge not only against larger rivals Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, but also against dozens of low-priced regional brands across the country, one of the executives said. The proposed capex investment is the largest yet by RCPL, which started operations in 2022 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Retail Ventures. "The capex is being done on a combined investment of Rs 6,000-8,000 crore by Reliance and some of its partners," said the executive cited above. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo In February, Reliance set up a plant in Guwahati along with local partner Jericho Foods and Beverages LLP to manufacture soft drinks and water, and cater to the Northeast region. Another facility is coming up in Bihar. Live Events The FMCG company's beverages portfolio includes Campa Cola , Orange and Lemon, Sosyo soft drinks, Spinner sports drink, Sun Crush juice, fruit-based hydration brand RasKik, and Independence water. Reliance Consumer has partnered with former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan to co-create, manufacture and sell Spinner sports drinks at Rs 10 for 250 ml bottles, less than half the price of rivals such as PepsiCo-owned Gatorade and Sting. So far, Campa and other beverages are being manufactured in 18 plants, all of which are co-investments. The company also makes and sells Sil jam and spreads, confectionery brands Lotus Chocolate, Toffeeman and Ravalgaon, Alan's Bugles snacks, Velvette shampoo, and self-created brands such as Independence staples. Most of its 15 brands are acquired. Availability of its brands, however, is currently restricted to select markets. An email sent to RCPL remained unanswered until press time Wednesday. The company wants to ensure its consumer portfolio is available nationally by March 2027, with about 70% availability by March next year for categories such as beverages, its director T Krishnakumar had told ET in an exclusive interview last month. "For any product to be scaled in an intense manner, you need 24-30 months, because anything less than that, you can't do a decent job," he had said. RCPL is following a strategy of focusing on "600 million consumers at the mass end and working closely with neighbourhood stores by giving them margins at today's cost," Krishnakumar had said in the interview. Reliance has priced its cola, sports, hydration and juice drinks at about 20-40% lower than Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Tata Consumer Products and Dabur, forcing the incumbents to accelerate consumers promotions, trade margins, and introducing more smaller, lower priced packs selectively. The ongoing summer season, though, has been severely impacted on account of unseasonal rains and early onset of monsoon. According to think tank ICRIER, India's beverages industry, which includes carbonated soft drinks, juices and water, is estimated at Rs 67,000 crore and expected to touch sales of Rs 1.47 lakh crore in sales by 2030. In FY25, RCPL reported revenue of Rs 11,500 crore, with Campa and Independence crossing Rs 1,000 crore each in sales. The brands' overall reach crossed one million stores last fiscal, the company said in its earnings report.
