umbai: A 5.25km portion of the newly built Mumbai Coastal Road south, which was planned to be opened on July 15, has now been pushed further. The new date of opening is not yet known.
There are over a dozen pedestrian underpasses, also known as PUPs, which will help pedestrians connect to the promenade.
The BMC had planned to open only a portion of the promenade from Priyadarshini Park up to Haji Ali and Baroda Palace up to Worli. This section measures around 5.25km. The entire promenade is 7.5km and also has a cycle track as part of it.
BMC officials have identified four locations along the promenade for installing temporary toilet facilities for six months to one year. The locations identified are near Amarsons Garden in Breach Candy, two in Worli, and one in Mahalaxmi. The promenade is a key component of the Coastal Road project, which aims to create public spaces along the coastline. tnn

Mumbai Schools Closed, Roads Choked After Heavy Rain, Flights Affected Too

Mumbai: Schools and colleges have been shut, several areas are waterlogged and massive traffic jams have been reported as Mumbai and its surrounding areas received heavy rain this morning. Here are 10 latest updates in this big story According to officials, the Maximum City has recorded over 54 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 72 mm and 65 mm of rainfall. Mumbai and nearby areas have been receiving heavy rain for the past couple of days, and the weather office has issued a red alert, warning of 'extremely heavy' rainfall in some areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and asked people to avoid stepping out unless necessary. The downpour has halted traffic and led to waterlogging in several areas. Among the arterial roads affected are the Eastern Freeway and the Western Express Highway. Visuals shared on social media show hundreds of cars stranded in heavy rain on key roads in and around Mumbai. Waterlogging has been reported in Andheri, Lokhandwala, Kanjurmarg, Sion Gandhi market and Navi Mumbai. The bad weather has also impacted air traffic. Many flights have been delayed, although airport authorities have not specified a number. Nine go-arounds -- when a pilot chooses to abort a landing and try again-- have been reported and at least one flight has been diverted. According to plane tracker Flightradar24, there is an average 54-minute delay in all flights out of Bombay. Local trains, considered Mumbai's lifeline, are running late by 15 to 20 minutes, according to several reports. BMC has shared updates on the diversion of BEST buses. The civic body has asked citizens to reach out to its control room through the 1916 helpline in case of any emergency. A wall collapse has been reported in Chembur. There have been no casualties and teams from BMC and the fire department have been rushed to the spot to evacuate the affected families.

Heavy rains hit Mumbai; low-lying areas flooded, local trains disrupted

Heavy downpour pummelled Mumbai and its suburbs, with some parts recording more than 200 mm rainfall in the wee hours of Saturday, inundating low-lying areas and affecting the movement of local trains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the metropolis for two days. Incessant rain continued to lash parts of the city in the morning with occasional heavy spells. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to citizens not to step out unnecessarily. Two people were killed and as many others sustained injuries in a landslide amid rains in the Vikhroli Parksite area in the eastern suburbs. The downpour began around 1 am and continued into the early hours of the day, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas of the western and eastern suburbs, including Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Chunabhatti, Aarey, Andheri, Kings Circle, Malad, and Goregaon, among others. The suburban train services were also severely affected due to waterlogging on tracks at several locations on the Central and Western Railway lines. On the Central Railway line, tracks were submerged at Matunga, Sion, Kurla, Vidyavihar, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup on the main line, and Wadala, Chunabhatti, Tilak Nagar and Kurla on the Harbour Line. Passengers have complained that Harbour Line services continue to be badly affected. Tracks were also inundated on the stretch between Dadar and Mahim stations on the Western Railway. "The water receded around 8 am and the train traffic slowly returned to normalcy," said Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of Central Railway, adding that the trains were running 15-20 minutes late around 11.30 am. A spokesperson from Western Railway said that suburban services on the network were running about 15 minutes late. According to railway officials, most government and private officers and establishments in the city have declared a holiday for the Dahi Handi festivities, and the suburban services were not crowded. A spokesperson from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that bus operations were also affected, as several buses were diverted from waterlogged areas in Sion, Kings Circle, Aarey Colony, and Malad Subway, among others. Civic officials said pumping operations were underway in multiple areas, and response teams had been deployed to address complaints of waterlogging and tree falls. Municipal Commissioner and administrator Bhushan Gagrani visited the disaster management emergency control room at the civic headquarters and gave necessary instructions to officials, a BMC spokesperson said. According to the IMD, several parts of Mumbai recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Friday and 5.30 am on Saturday. Vikhroli, in the eastern suburbs, recorded the highest rainfall at 248.5 mm, followed by Santacruz with 232.5 mm, Sion with 221 mm, and Juhu with 208 mm. The intensity of rainfall was higher in the suburbs compared to south Mumbai, where Colaba recorded just 70 mm of rainfall during this period. The IMD had on Friday issued an orange alert for Mumbai for two days, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. However, the department updated it to a red alert in the wee hours of Saturday. "Warnings are updated as early strengthening of synoptic situations," said Shubhangi Bhute, an IMD official, adding that in the coming days, the entire west coast is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy spells. Two dead in landslide after heavy rain lashes Mumbai; flights, trains delayed

Mumbai: Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after torrential rainfall in Mumbai triggered a deadly landslide in the city's Vikhroli area on Saturday. Flight and train operations were also hit due to the heavy rain and there were traffic disruptions due to waterlogging. The incident took place around 2.39 A.M. at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite, when a portion of soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut. Four members of the Mishra family were trapped under the debris and were immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors declared Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50) dead, while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that both injured are currently stable. Soon after the incident, emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, police, and BMC staff, reached the site and began evacuation. Several nearby residents were shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, Mumbai struggled with widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruption following continuous downpours. Major arterial roads were flooded, vehicles remained stranded on the Western Express Highway, and the Andheri subway was shut due to water accumulation. Several areas, including Kurla, Sion, Chembur, and Andheri, reported heavy waterlogging. Authorities also stated that waterlogging on railway tracks disrupted train operations, causing several delays. Local trains were reported to be running 15-20 minutes late, and passengers were advised to plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience. Flight operations at Mumbai airport were also affected due to the heavy rainfall. Many airlines, including IndiGo, issued advisories urging passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. Mumbai Police issued an advisory warning of possible waterlogging across key areas and cautioned citizens against unnecessary travel. "Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and to exercise caution while venturing out. Police have been instructed to be on high alert, and Mumbai Police is alert and ready to help Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, dial 100 / 112 / 103," Mumbai Police said in its post.
