Official prices of perishable food items across Lahore remained largely stable this week, but consumers saw little benefit due to widespread overcharging and profiteering by greengrocers, retailers and street vendors.
Despite seasonal declines driven by peak harvest conditions and hot weather, shoppers continued to pay 50 to 100 per cent above official prices.
For many residents, the failure to curb profiteering has become routine, with price lists issued by market committees often ignored and enforcement officials appearing disengaged from the daily struggles of the public. "What's the point of these official rates if no one follows them?" said Nadeem Qureshi, a father of three shopping in the Green Town Bazaar. "Vendors charge whatever they want, and no one checks them."
Farzana Bibi, a homemaker from the Township area, shared. "Every week, I see prices go up on the same items—even when the government says they've gone down. We're told there's a price control system, but we've yet to see it work."
A review of official price lists and market surveys reveals stark contrasts.
Live chicken was officially priced between Rs397 and Rs411 per kilogram, yet vendors sold it for Rs570 to Rs680, with boneless chicken reaching as high as Rs1,050 per kilogram.
Despite official price control efforts, a wide range of essential vegetables and fruits continued to be sold at grossly inflated rates across Lahore's markets, burdening consumers with unchecked overpricing.
From staples like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes to seasonal fruits such as mangoes, cherries, and apricots, the official rates served as little more than a formality.
A-grade potatoes, fixed at Rs45 to Rs50, were routinely sold for up to Rs100 per kg, while onions listed at Rs30 to Rs35 fetched Rs80 in many places.
Tomatoes, meant to cost Rs30–35, were sold at nearly triple the price. Garlic and ginger, essential kitchen ingredients, saw massive discrepancies, with official prices being consistently ignored—Chinese garlic, for instance, was listed at Rs285–300 but sold at Rs500, and ginger retailed for up to Rs1,000 against its listed Rs610–640.
Similar patterns were observed in other vegetables. Bitter gourd, spinach, zucchini, and cucumbers, despite price reductions or stability, were sold far above government-fixed rates. Brinjal, priced officially at Rs66–70, reached Rs140, and ladyfinger, listed at Rs124–130, was sold at nearly Rs180.
Even lemons, after a Rs70 drop in official price, cost up to Rs600 per kilogram in the markets. Cauliflower and cabbage were among the worst examples, sold at over four times their official rates.
Fruits showed no relief either. Apples priced at Rs230–390 were sold as high as Rs800, while bananas of all grades saw increases of Rs80–130 over official rates.
Dates were listed at Rs430–460 but sold for as high as Rs800-2,000 per kilogram. Melons, watermelons, peaches, and phalsa all saw similar surges, with consumers paying far beyond government-fixed prices.
This blatant disregard for official pricing mechanisms has rendered the price control system ineffective.
Despite daily updates and official campaigns, vendors openly flout regulations with impunity, exploiting both high demand and lax enforcement.

SYDNEY: Asian share markets and the dollar made a soft start on Monday as U.S.-China trade tensions continued to simmer, while investors turned defensive ahead of key U.S. jobs data and a widely expected cut in European interest rates. There was little obvious reaction to President Donald Trump's threat late Friday to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50%, beginning on June 4, a sudden twist that drew the ire of European Union negotiators. Speaking on Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump would soon speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping to iron out a dispute over critical minerals. Beijing then forcefully rejected Trump's trade criticism, suggesting a call might be some time coming. White House officials also continued to play down a court ruling that Trump had overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from U.S. trading partners. 'The court ruling will complicate the path ahead on trade policy, but there remains an ample set of provisions available to the administration to deliver its desired results,' said Bruce Kasman, chief economist at JPMorgan. 'There is a commitment to maintaining a minimum U.S. tariff rate of at least 10% and imposing further sector tariff increases,' he added. 'An increase in ASEAN to discourage transhipment looks likely, and the bias for higher tariffs on U.S.-EU trade persists.' Markets will be particularly interested to see if Trump goes ahead with the 50% tariff on Wednesday, or backs off as he has done so often before. In the meantime, caution reigned and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan went flat. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.4%, while Hong Kong dropped 2.5%. South Korean stocks edged up 0.2% on hopes a snap presidential election on Tuesday would deliver a clear winner. EUROSTOXX 50 futures dipped 0.2%, while FTSE futures and DAX futures were little changed. S&P 500 futures eased 0.4% and Nasdaq futures lost 0.5%. The S&P had climbed 6.2% in May, while the Nasdaq rallied 9.6% on hopes final import levies will be far lower than the initial sky-high levels. Fed Governor Christopher Waller did say on Monday that cuts remain possible later this year as he saw downside risks to economic activity and employment and upside risks to inflation from the tariffs. A softer jobs report would be a relief for the Treasury market, where 30-year yields continue to flirt with the 5% barrier as investors demand a higher premium to offset the ever-expanding supply of debt. The Senate this week will start considering a tax-and-spending bill that will add an estimated $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion in debt. Across the Atlantic, the European Central Bank is considered almost certain to cut its rates by a quarter point to 2.0% on Thursday, while markets will be sensitive to guidance on the chance of another move as early as July. The Bank of Canada meets Wednesday and markets imply a 76% chance it will hold rates at 2.75%, while sounding dovish on the future given the tariff-fuelled risk of recession there. Widening rate spreads have so far offered only limited support to the U.S. dollar. 'The greenback remains near the lower end of its post-2022 range and considerably weaker than interest rate differentials would imply,' noted Jonas Goltermann, deputy chief markets economist at Capital Economics. 'Sentiment around the greenback remains negative and it continues to look vulnerable to further bad news on the fiscal and trade policy fronts.' On Monday, the dollar slipped 0.3% on the yen to 143.55 , while the euro edged up 0.2% to $1.1370 . The greenback even fell 0.2% on the Canadian dollar to 1.3727 , getting no tailwind from Trump's threat of 50% tariffs on Canadian steel exports. In commodity markets, gold firmed 0.6% to $3,310 an ounce , having lost 1.9% last week. Oil prices bounced after OPEC+ decided to increase output in July by the same amount as it did in each of the prior two months, a relief to some who had feared an even bigger increase. Brent rose $1.60 to $64.38 a barrel, while U.S. crude gained $1.74 to $62.53 per barrel.

With Eidul Azha just around the corner, the sale of sacrificial animals has gathered pace across the metropolitan city, with markets seeing an uptick in activity. However, buyers are facing steep price hikes, with the cost of sacrificial animals surging by 50 to 70 per cent compared to last year. In various cattle markets of the metropolis, the starting price for goats is now around Rs40,000, while heifers - regardless of weight - are hardly available for less than Rs140,000. Last year, a low-weight heifer could still be purchased for under Rs100,000 were now fetching Rs200,000 or more. Buyers are increasingly frustrated at the lack of official regulation in animal pricing. Traders are setting prices arbitrarily, leaving buyers to negotiate deals through bargaining. Traders attribute the increase in prices to several factors, including the rising cost of animal feed, transportation, and other logistical expenses. "The cost of fodder alone has surged by over 50 per cent," Kashif Qureshi, a trader, told The Express Tribune. He added that animals are bought from larger markets in Punjab and Sindh, and medium-sized traders then transport them to Karachi - incurring fuel, tax, and miscellaneous expenses. "The total cost accumulates through various stages - purchasing from big traders, transportation to Karachi, and maintenance at the local markets, including lighting and security," Qureshi added. "Only after accounting for all these factors do traders add their margin, which can range from Rs15,000 to Rs50,000 for smaller animals and Rs50,000 to Rs200,000 or more for larger animals." Traders say that the pricing of animals is also influenced by breed, appearance, and weight. "While 13 government-designated cattle markets operate in Karachi, animals are also being sold informally in various neighbourhoods," said another trader, Arif Qureshi. He explained that cows, heifers, and camels are among the large animals available, but due to the current price surge, many middle-income families are struggling to afford them. Heifers of average weight are now selling between Rs200,000 and Rs300,000, while heavier, premium animals are priced between Rs400,000 and Rs1 million. Elite buyers are purchasing high-end animals ranging from Rs1.2 million to Rs2 million or more. As Eidul Azha nears, buyers are increasingly visiting the markets during evening and nighttime hours, typically seeking medium-sized heifers for around Rs200,000. Most animals are sourced from various districts across Punjab. In the goat market, prices have also risen sharply. Saifuddin, a goat trader, told The Express Tribune that medium-weight goats that were previously sold for Rs30,000 to Rs35,000 are now priced at Rs50,000 to Rs60,000. The starting price for goats is around Rs40,000, with some reaching up to Rs300,000, depending on breed and build. Rams and sheep are similarly priced, ranging from Rs40,000 to Rs200,000 or more. Their valuation is also driven by factors such as weight, breed, and appearance, according to trader Rashid Saleem. Camel trader Ibrahim Din spoke about a growing trend in camel sacrifices over the past two years, though it remains relatively limited. He said camels brought in from different districts of Sindh now cost Rs300,000 and above. Karachiites have voiced their concern over the sharp rise in prices. Saeed-ul-Zafar from Nazimabad said the same heifer he purchased for Rs150,000 last year cost him Rs240,000 this time. "There needs to be a government-regulated pricing mechanism for sacrificial animals," he urged. Similarly, Asif Abbasi from Saddar criticised the lack of oversight, saying, "Traders are charging arbitrary prices. I bought a goat for Rs60,000 this year, which cost me just Rs35,000 last Eid." With no formal pricing framework in place, people are left to navigate the inflated market through direct negotiations with traders - hoping to uphold the tradition of sacrifice amidst economic challenges.
