Scotland knocked out of curling worlds by holders Canada
Scotland have been knocked out of the World Women's Curling Championship after losing 10-4 to reigning champions Canada at the play-off stage in South Korea.
Sophie Jackson's rink, ranked 19th in the world, had beaten the world number ones in their opening round-robin game - one of only two matches Canada lost on their way to finishing third in the table.
But two-time champion Rachel Homan's rink established early control in the play-off after scoring four at the second end.
Another three at the fourth set them up for a victory with two ends to spare.
The Scots had finished sixth in the round robin with seven victories and five defeats, their finish at least ensuring that a Great Britain rink will be represented at next year's Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
However, it is Canada who progress to Saturday's semi-final against hosts South Korea.
Gim Eun-ji's 10th-ranked rink qualified directly for the last four after finishing second in the round robin with the same lost 10, won two record as Canada but having beaten the holders 11-7 earlier in the week.
There was an upset in the other play-off as two-time silver medallist Anna Hasselborg's third-ranked Swedes, who finished fourth in the round robin, were beaten 8-7 by China.
Wang Rui's rink, ranked 17th in the world, progress to face Silvana Tirinzoni's four-time champions from Switzerland, the second seeds who topped the round-robin and whose only defeat came against Canada.

‘Third-best season ever': Over 6.5 million skiers visited Utah's resorts during the season
SALT LAKE CITY () — 'Greatest snow on Earth,' Utah's long-running slogan, is proving itself true after another successful season at Utah's ski resorts. According to Ski Utah, this last season was the third-best in state history. There are 15 ski resorts across Utah, and together they recorded 6,503,635 visitors during the 2024-25 season, which has just wrapped up. According to a press release from Ski Utah, this is the third-highest number of skier visits in state history. This season's skier visits were down 3.6% from last year, the press release says, but the more than 6.5 million visitors this year show a 3.3% increase over Utah's five-year average. Utah's economy benefits greatly from recreation at the ski resorts. Ski Utah's president and CEO, Nathan Rafferty, emphasized skiing's impact on Utah. EXCLUSIVE: Utah man who underwent 120 surgeries advocates for rare disease awareness in Washington, D.C. 'To hit our third-best season ever and generate $2.51 billion for Utah's economy is a major win,' Rafferty is quoted in the release. 'The ski industry in Utah supports approximately 25,000 jobs, and with the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games on the horizon, the eyes of the world will be on us once again. We're excited about the opportunities ahead and grateful to all who helped make this season a success.' Ski Utah says that ski resorts are already hard at work to prepare for the upcoming 2034 Winter Olympics. In the next two years alone, 13 new lifts are expected to finish construction and open, and many resorts are planning upgrades to their mountain areas. 'Utah's future as a global winter destination remains as promising as ever,' Ski Utah concluded. Davis: Stanley Cup final series took an unexpected turn for broadcaster Chris Cuthbert
Chris Cuthbert is also disappointed with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers. He's not cheering for or against the Oilers, but as the play-by-play announcer on Sportsnet's Stanley Cup telecasts Cuthbert had enjoyed the dramatic, back-to-back overtime contests that opened the series and was hoping Game 3 would continue producing legendary showdowns between Edmonton and the Florida Panthers. Instead the third game was an ugly, lopsided affair that reigning-champion Florida won 6-1 on Monday to take a 2-1 lead in the NHL's best-of-seven title series. Game 4 is slated for Thursday night in Sunrise, Fla. Cuthbert will call the game alongside analyst Craig Simpson, drawing audiences that typically exceed four million Canadian viewers per game, not including streaming numbers. 'It's a lot of fun, but you're catching me on the least fun part after last night's tough game,' Cuthbert said Tuesday from 'sticky-hot' southern Florida. 'I mean, the first two felt like we were on our way to one of the greatest Stanley Cup finals ever and we still might get there, but it took a detour in Game 3 for sure.' What happened? 'Maybe the Florida Panthers happened because we've seen that movie,' said Cuthbert, recalling the preliminary victories that moved the Panthers into their third straight Stanley Cup final. 'They did it to Tampa. They did it to Toronto in Game 5 and even worse in Game 7. And I didn't cover it, but it seemed like the first three games against Carolina were pretty similar, too. 'The Panthers are an extremely good team that can make you look bad. They made the Oilers look bad last night.' After spending 15 years as TSN's leading broadcaster for CFL games, Cuthbert moved to Sportsnet in 2020 and became the primary play-by-play voice of Hockey Night in Canada. He began broadcasting university football games at Queen's University in the 1970s before getting hired at a Yorkton radio station, CJGX, where he did play-by-play for the Saskatchewan Amateur Junior Hockey League's Terriers. 'You can add that (future NHLers) Chris Chelios, Al MacInnis, Dave Tippett and Ken Daneyko were in the SAJHL that year, so I was in good company,' said Cuthbert. That's also where he started dreaming about getting to where he is now, from hearing Al Michaels' iconic 'Do you believe in miracles' during the U.S. hockey team's victory over Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics to calling his own 'Golden goal' moment while describing Sidney Crosby's game-winner for Canada in the 2010 Games. 'I don't know if I thought about (the Stanley Cup),' said Cuthbert. 'But I was sitting in my apartment above a Chinese food restaurant in Yorkton, where I was living when I worked at CJGX, and I remember watching the 1980 Miracle on Ice and thinking, 'Man, that would be cool to call a game like that.' 'So, yeah, 2010 happened. But I think the dream of calling the Stanley Cup was probably even before I got to Yorkton because I was doing play-by-play when we were playing road hockey as kids. I went to bed with the transistor radio under my pillow, listening to Foster Hewitt or Dan Kelly or any number of those play-by-play guys back then because you could get all those signals on the radio.' Always well-researched, Cuthbert reads, watches and listens to numerous media reports about hockey and football. They help keep him in touch with the NHL and the CFL, so he's conversant in both sports. 'I still get all the (newspaper) clips and I go through them,' said Cuthbert. 'I probably see less of the CFL now but I do like to punch in and try to catch up. I was curious to see how Week 1 went. A lot of people think the Riders can do something this year.' Indeed, after beating the Ottawa Redblacks — Cuthbert grew up in Ontario and used to cheer for the Ottawa Rough Riders — 31-26 in their season-opener, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are 1-0 while preparing to visit the 0-1 Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday. Cuthbert will be otherwise engaged Saturday, calling Game 5 of the Stanley Cup in Edmonton. Cuthbert is wondering if, like last season when they won Games 4, 5 and 6 against Florida before losing the decisive contest, the Oilers can rebound. 'Do they pass this next test?' said Cuthbert. 'This may be the biggest test yet. 'I was surprised that (Panthers head coach Paul) Maurice said this is easily the best team he's coached. And I thought, 'Man, you just won the cup with another team and you're not there yet with this one.' We're seeing why he feels that way.' NFL Adds $94M in Genius Stock, Becomes Largest Shareholder
The NFL is receiving $94 million in Genius Sports stock for granting the data and analytics company two more years of exclusive play-by-play and gambling data to sportsbooks globally. 'The NFL is our largest commercial partner and one of our largest shareholders; that gives us a tremendous position in the market,' Charles Scherr, Genius' head of corporate development and strategic initiatives, said on a phone call. 'Frankly, it aligns all stakeholders in what the business needs to do for the next five years through the balance of the decade.' More from NFL, Genius Sports Extend and Expand Betting Data Partnership Sporticast 455: The $7M Takeover of a Winter Olympics Cult Favorite Charles Woodson Faces Tom Brady Again, Now as Browns Owner In a regulatory filing Wednesday morning disclosing the financial aspect of the data partnership extension announced earlier in the day, Genius said that it granted 9.5 million warrants—the right to buy stock—to the NFL. Of those, 4.5 million are vested immediately, with the remaining five million vesting on April 1, 2028. The exercise price for the warrants is one penny each. Based on Genius' early stock price Wednesday of $9.93, the award is worth $94.34 million. Genius shares were up more than 5% on the news. The NFL already owned 14.5 million in stock, all exercisable warrants, from the league's existing data deal with London-based Genius. With today's additional warrants, and Genius' current diluted total share count of 277.2 million, the NFL effectively owns nearly 8.7% of Genius Sports, making it the largest shareholder in the business, based on publicly disclosed shareholder information. The NFL's total stake, including both vested and unvested warrants, is now worth more than $235 million. Based on Genius' annual report, the league owned 18.5 million warrants, all exercisable, at the end of 2024. The league probably sold or distributed four million of those warrants to member clubs. Given the additional regulatory responsibilities that come with owning 10% or more shares in a business, the NFL has some incentive to remain under the 10% threshold. A spokesperson for the NFL declined to comment beyond what was in the announcement. Genius and the NFL originally teamed up to offer official gambling data in 2021. The extension expands the deal, allowing Genius to sell ad inventory on NFL BetVision, which are the streams of live games in the sportsbook apps. Genius said in a May call with investors it broadcast about 270 NFL games last season on BetVision.
