VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vincennes University has announced it will be hosting the Indiana Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Associations (INTMA) High School Manufacturing Competition on February 21 and 22.
The event will include 90 students from nearly 12 high schools across the state of Indiana. The competition will include 'rigorous machining challenges that highlight the essential skills driving today's modern manufacturing industry,' said the university.
These challenges will allow competitors to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in computer numerical control (CNC) technology through programming and milling competitions. The university said participants will also engage in precision exercises in manual machining, including manual milling, manual lathe work and surface grinding.
VU Precision Machining and Advanced CNC Technology Program Director Jonathan Vennard said, 'The future of manufacturing depends on highly trained professionals, and Vincennes University is proud to foster the next generation of industry leaders. By hosting this competition, we are providing high school students with the extraordinary opportunity to showcase their skills in the University's cutting-edge facilities while also connecting them with industry experts and potential employers.'
Along with the competition, junior participants will participate in unique workshops, connect with students, enjoy a night of entertainment at the University's Bowling Center and an overnight stay in a VU residents hall.

CNE receives record number of job applications amid high youth unemployment

TORONTO - Thousands of young people are set to line up for job interviews at the Canadian National Exhibition today amid a high level of youth unemployment in Ontario. The CNE says it has received more than 54,000 online job applications for more than 5,000 seasonal positions at the two-week fair, including cashiers, retail associates, game attendants, food service staff, midway operators and informational guides. It says this is the highest number of job applications it has ever received, calling it a reflection of a job market that's causing high rates of youth unemployment. One expert says the youth unemployment rate is higher this year compared to the same period last year but it's still lower than during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 recession. Viet Vu, the manager of economic research at Toronto Metropolitan University's Dais think thank, says youth unemployment is up because the job market has cooled over the last several months, due to fewer businesses hiring and the disruptions in trade with the United States. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for people aged 15 to 24 in Ontario was 15.8 per cent in June. Vu says a lot of young people who are looking for their first job after graduation and students who are looking for summer jobs are hit especially hard in a difficult job market. The CNE says it has already hired people for more than 1,000 positions. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 30, 2025.

Leadership changes at Vincennes University

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vincennes University will be making two key leadership changes for the upcoming school year, as Tim Eaton, Vice President of Financial Services and Chief Financial Officer, and Dr. Laura Treanor, Provost, Senior Vice President of Instructional Services and Dean of Faculty, will be leaving the university. Eaton will be retiring at the end of June and will be replaced by Conya Wampler, the current Assistant Vice President of Financial Services and Controller. Eaton has been with the university since 1989 and 'has been instrumental in securing critical state funding, including biennial capital and operating budget requests, and ensuring long-term financial health,' said Vincennes University. 'For nearly four decades, Tim Eaton has provided steady, insightful leadership at the helm of VU's budgets and financial management, skillfully guiding the University through periods of economic uncertainty, demographic shifts, and changing public funding landscapes,' said Vincennes University President Dr. Chuck Johnson. Travis Linneweber, currently Vincennes University's Budget Director, will transition to replace Wampler as the university's Assistant Vice President of Financial Services. Dr. Treanor will also be leaving the university, as she has been named the next President of Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Treanor joined Vincennes University in 2018, and since then has launched Leadership Lunch and Learn sessions, created the Trailblazer Teaching Academy and lead the American Council on Education Women's Network Indiana. 'Few have matched the tireless dedication and transformative leadership of Dr. Laura Treanor. Her extraordinary impact over the past seven years has significantly advanced Vincennes University and will be felt for decades to come,' said Johnson. Jaci Lederman will serve as Interim Provost, Vice President for Instructional Services and Dean of Faculty in Dr. Treanor's absence. 'We will soon celebrate and bid farewell to two exceptional leaders whose dedicated service and countless contributions have significantly strengthened Vincennes University; fortunately, we are also blessed to have talented colleagues ready to step into new roles, ensuring continued stability and success through these transitions and into the future,' said Johnson.
