Aussie sporting legend reveals his gruesome injuries after being found unconscious by passers-by

Daily Mail2 days ago
Aussie sporting icon Troy Bayliss sustained a series of horrific injuries after he came off his bike during a ride, just weeks after he revealed he had got back on the bike after recovering from a broken ankle.
The 56-year-old three-time Superbike World Championship winner broke the news that he had suffered a crash on his Instagram account on Monday, scarily revealing that onlookers had found him lying prone on the racetrack.
He published an image of himself in hospital with a stream of cables and heart monitors attached to his chest.
The right side of his body was covered in excruciating-looking abrasions from skidding on the ground after coming off his bike.
Despite the nature of his injuries, Bayliss appears to be keeping a positive mood, holding aloft a peace sign with his right hand.
The three-time Superbikes World Championship winner stated he had suffered seven broken ribs and a punctured lung in the incident
'Went for a spin in the meat wagon yesterday,' he captioned the image.
'Thanks to the people who spotted me having a sleep on the track.'
He then revealed the gruesome injuries he sustained in the accident, stating he had broken seven ribs, his collarbone and suffered a punctured lung and was just 'beat up.'
Few details have been shared on how and where the accident took place, as well as the bike he was riding.
The racing superstar, who hails from Taree in New South Wales, had only returned to riding on July 22, following his ankle injury, but he'll now be sidelined again for another extended period.
Many from the motorsport world took to Instagram to send their well-wishes to the Superbikes star, with the father of Aussie Formula One star, Jack Doohan, Mick, commenting: 'Speedy recovery mate, hope nothing too serious. Love bikes, but do not miss the body slam!!'
Former MotoGP star Marco Melandri wrote: 'Damn!!!! Take care mate!' while Max Biaggi said: 'F***! Can't believe!!!! Be strong my friend.'
Cal Crutchlow added: 'Heal up mate and you be back to still getting after it again soon!!! Legend.'
In recent months, Bayliss has posted multiple photos on his Instagram, appearing to be riding dirt bikes.
He is widely hailed as one of Australia's greatest ever motorsport competitors, having enjoyed a glittering career that spanned from 1997 to 2008, and included a brief stint in MotoGP.
Across his Superbikes World Championship career, the former Ducati rider started in 156 races and made 94 podiums - 52 of those were victories.
He is also no stranger to injuries. In 2007, Bayliss was involved in a crash at Donington Park. He was later dubbed by motorsport outlet Visor Down as the 'hardest man in motorcycle rating' after he got his hand stuck under the bike before the vehicle smashed into him. Bayliss later required surgery to have his little finger removed and required surgery to repair a split testicle.
Despite the severity of the injuries, he would get back on the bike and the following year would claim his third World Superbikes Championship.

Wally Lewis reveals footy legend Sam Backo's final wish before he died aged 64

Rugby league great Sam Backo's dying wish was to pass away on the country where he was born in far north Queensland, NRL Immortal Wally Lewis has revealed. The former Raiders, Broncos, Queensland and Kangaroos star lost his battle with a bacterial infection last Sunday, aged 64. He died surrounded by family in hospital in his home town of Cairns, with Lewis and his fellow Broncos and Maroons great Gene Miles visiting their former teammate shortly before he passed. 'He'd been battling for a number of months and he was still in a great mood,' Lewis told Channel Nine. 'Geno [Miles] and I got the opportunity to go along and visit Sam, say g'day to him, and he seemed like he was in great spirits. 'He was battling all the way through, and sadly lost his fight for life. Backo's fellow footy legend, Wally Lewis (pictured with wife Lynda) paid him a visit shortly before he died from a bacterial infection 'He really needed to be in his homeland, though, when he wanted to go. 'He said to his wife, "Get me out of here. If I'm gonna pass away, I'm gonna want to die in an area where I'm gonna feel very comfortable", and it was a very moving moment.' Lewis has fond memories of playing with Backo, whose stellar play in the forward pack earned him the nickname 'Slammin' Sam'. 'He was always fun to be around, the guys used to say, except for dinner time,' Lewis joked. 'He was just a great guy, very funny man as well.' Backo enjoyed a glittering career at the top of the game during the '80s, and was hailed for his work away from the footy pitch as an advocate for Indigenous Australians. He was named one of the greatest Aboriginal players of the 20th century and notably became the first Australian forward to score tries in all three Tests of an Ashes series, in 1988. During his international career, the former prop forward also won six caps for the Kangaroos and represented Queensland on seven occasions, helping lift the Maroons to victories during the 1988 and 1989 series. The former Queensland star had been diagnosed with melioidosis in April and had spent some time in an intensive care unit in Cairns Hospital. Backo, who also had a heart condition, had been transferred to a hospital in Brisbane to have a pacemaker inserted in July. Reports from some outlets claimed that the former prop believed he had caught the illness following a swim in a Freshwater Creek at Goomboora Park in Cairns. Melioidosis is an infectious disease that is caused by bacteria lurking in soil or dirty water. The illness is treated with antibiotics and symptoms can include fevers, headaches or trouble breathing. The illness has killed 35 people in Queensland so far this year. Backo's sisters Dolores, Charmaene, Kathrine and Jewel said in a statement: 'He was also a strong fighter for his people, the Warrgamay people and the South Sea Islander community, descended from Ni-Vanuatu and Solomon Islander people kidnapped as slave labour for the Queensland and NSW sugar industry. 'He was a man with a huge generosity of spirit and was always thinking of others. 'Even as he lay in the Cairns Hospital's intensive care unit, he made sure he sent a message of condolence to the family of a friend who had just passed. 'Just one example of the measure of the man.'

Why the AFL are 'absolutely out of their minds' at what Caroline Wilson did on Channel Seven footy panel show - as Eddie McGuire reveals 'very sensitive' issue

Eddie McGuire has launched a furious broadside at Caroline Wilson after the veteran journalist went rogue and exposed the identity of an undercover security guard hired to protect the safety of several AFL head coaches. The league reportedly told Wilson not to bring the man to attention on Channel Sevens's The Agenda Setters footy panel show on Monday night – but the scribe ignored the plea. The request ahead of Monday's show followed the league adding beefed–up security for Michael Voss, Luke Beveridge and Simon Goodwin in recent weeks for games at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. According to Nine's McGuire, the AFL is 'absolutely out of their minds' and 'incandescent with rage' at Wilson after she exposed the guard. 'They asked Channel Seven specifically because of the delicate nature of personal security and family security of AFL employees, not to run the story about the security guard,' McGuire said on Footy Classified on Wednesday night. 'Not only did they run the story, they ran it absolutely open and the man involved here is an executive and a top professional in undercover surveillance and security. 'She (Wilson) said "the AFL would be furious with me". Well, she got that part right. 'I can tell you they are absolutely out of their minds that this bloke has now been put in jeopardy. It's not just the football that this guy does. 'Not only that, it has brought to bear all the issues on sensitivities and privacy issues with not only the coaches, but the families of the coaches.' McGuire then questioned how the free–to–air network can salvage what is becoming a rocky working relationship. 'Channel Seven are the home of football (as the host broadcaster) and they put a ton of money in,' he said. 'But (after this saga) the balance between the ton of money and where they are at the moment is more fractious now than it has ever been.' McGuire added that if the AFL had told him not to run a story after pointing out security concerns, he would have canned the piece. 'It is very sensitive, this is a security issue, (so) I wouldn't have run the story,' he said. Footy fans on social media also felt Wilson crossed the line. 'Why would you report on this? It is clearly for the safety of the coaches and now you have outed the bloke. You say the wives are scared yet you do this. Shame,' one posted on X. 'Your story is more important than other people's safety is what you are telling us. Poor form exposing it,' said another. McGuire also said the Western Bulldogs delivered a 'please explain' to Channel Seven over Wilson's on-air comments slamming their coach Luke Beveridge, and 'humiliating their president and chief executive'. last Thursday night.

David Warner: Joe Root will have nightmares about Josh Hazlewood

David Warner has stoked the fire before this winter's Ashes series by claiming that Joe Root will have nightmares about facing Josh Hazlewood in Australia — and warning that Harry Brook needs to prepare for a barrage of bouncers. Root and Brook are the two top-ranked Test batsmen in the world after playing starring roles in England's thrilling 2-2 Test series draw with India, which concluded on Monday. Their next Test match engagement is the Ashes opener in Perth, which begins on November 21. Australia are heading towards the series in limbo, with plenty of question marks over their batting line-up — particularly at the top of the order after Warner retired from Test cricket last year — but the 38-year-old has warned England's star batsmen that they are in for a serious examination at the hands of the home side's bowling attack.
