Clifton's iconic ‘Pentagon' villa just sold for a record-breaking R157.5 million

In a sale that has sent jaws dropping across the continent, The Pentagon - a striking five-bedroom villa perched high on Nettleton Road in Clifton, Cape Town - has just changed hands for a whopping R157,550,000. The buyer? A South African, proving once again that the appetite for ultra-luxury property on local soil is alive and well. The property, long admired and often envied, has lingered on the market for several years, previously listed at R160 million. But this week, Cape Town's premium property circles were abuzz when Lance Cohen of Lance Real Estate finally sealed the deal. It's the highest residential sale recorded in South Africa so far this year - a fitting headline for a home as spectacular as this one. Nicknamed The Pentagon, this five-level masterpiece is the epitome of architectural drama and ocean-facing opulence. Designed by none other than Stefan Antoni, one of South Africa's most recognisable award-winning architectural names, the home boasts panoramic views from every floor, thanks to its bold tiered design. Let's talk features. A 16-metre heated infinity pool spills out toward the Atlantic Ocean, creating the illusion of floating in midair. There's also a private cinema room, glass elevator, state-of-the-art gym, home office, and steam room - not to mention staff quarters, a powerful 80kVA generator, and a bespoke Italian kitchen by Assirelli. Quick-fire facts about this record-setting villa: Size: 940m2 Bedrooms: 5 (all en-suite) Bathrooms: 6.5 Parking: 8 bays (including four garages) View: Every single floor offers front-row seats to Clifton's world-famous coastline. Even for the famously extravagant Nettleton Road - often dubbed the 'billionaire's row' of Cape Town - this sale is something special. It sets a new benchmark not just for the Atlantic Seaboard, but for ultra-high-net-worth property deals across Africa. This suburb is renowned for its expensive sea-facing real estate, beach bungalows, and high property values. As the rest of us stare at our screens in awe, one thing's for sure: Clifton just got a little more exclusive.

Salik toll gates: How to pass through for free

Here at Time Out Dubai, we're always looking for ways to save you money. And with the dynamic Salik toll gate fees since the end of January, we thought you might need this information more than ever. Salik is Dubai's automated toll collection system, and each time a vehicle passes through a toll point, a variable fee is deducted depending on the time of day you're on the road. There are currently 10 Salik Gates in Dubai. These are: Al Barsha Al Garhoud Al Maktoum Al Mamzar South Al Mamzar North Al Safa North Al Safa South Airport Tunnel Business Bay Crossing Jebel Ali Here's how you can pass through Salik toll gates for free. Between the hours of 1am and 6am every day, passing through all Salik gates is now completely free. Otherwise, Salik toll fees are Dhs6 at rush hour between 6am and 10am and Dhs4 between 10am and 4pm, 8pm to 1am and all day on Sunday. New Salik toll gate pricing in full 1am – 6am: free 6am – 10am: Dhs6 10am – 4pm: Dhs4 4pm – 8pm: Dhs6 8pm – 1am: Dhs4 Sundays (excluding public holidays, special occasions and major events): Dhs4 Drive under one, get the other one free Credit: Flikr If you're on the way to Sharjah and you pass through Al Mamzar South, you will pay Dhs4. But if you then pass through Al Mamzar North within one hour, you can drive underneath that toll gate for free. And vice versa… When passing through Al Mamzar North on your way to the Al Mamzar South gate in the same direction within an hour you will only be charged only once. That's technically a discount (sort of). Similarly, if you're passing through Al Safa North then you won't be charged for driving through Al Safa South if you travel within one hour and vice versa. Setting up your Salik To sign up for your Salik, go online to buy a tag or stop by any petrol station in Dubai. You can then stick your tag to your windshield, add credit and you're able to pass through the toll gates with ease. Each payment will be deducted automatically. You can register, buy a tag and recharge all your credit by heading to or via the Smart Salik App available in the Apple Store and Google Play store. A Salik tag costs Dhs100 to set up, which includes Dhs50 for the tag itself and Dhs50 for a pre-paid toll balance.
