Impressive Drogheda United put on a show in front of Irish boss Heimir Hallgrimsson

ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC 0
Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson saw no goals on his first-ever visit to Sullivan & Lambe Park but witnessed further evidence of the high standards in the League of Ireland's top flight as Drogheda United and St Patrick's played out an entertaining stalemate on Monday evening.
After this performance by the home side we can surely expect to see the Icelander at a few more Drogs matches in the coming months, and why wouldn't he because if he wants to see the cream of the crop in the domestic league then this is the place to be!
Drogheda's high press almost yielded instant dividends as Warren Davis nearly dispossessed Tom Grivosti and his keeper Joseph Anang in the opening seconds, with the bounce of the ball favouring Pats. Then Darragh Markey pickpocketed Chris Forrester and worked the ball forward to Thomas Oluwa and the striker's cross reached Owen Lambe who flashed a shot just over the bar.
Next to try his luck for the league leaders was Shane Farrell whose free kick struck the defensive wall after Davis had drawn a foul from Pat's full-back Al-Amin Kazeem.
Oluwa then caught former Drogs defender Joe Redmond napping with his lightning pace and was clean through on goal for a moment before the Pats captain got back to nick the ball away.
Drogs skipper Ryan Brennan was lucky to escape uninjured after taking a blow to the face from the boot of Ryan McLaughlin - a challenge that surely warranted at least a yellow card - and it was Brennan who nearly raised the roof with an audacious scissors kick that unfortunately he couldn't direct on target.
Pats' only real goal attempt of the first half came on 28 minutes - an off-target long-range header from Redmond - but seconds later Drogheda almost scored as Conor Kane, Markey and Davis were involved in a move which ended with a Farrell 25-yard drive that Anang tipped over the bar.
Bolger and Farrell both had attempts stopped by the big Pats keeper and Bolger headed another half-chance well wide at the near post from a Lambe delivery.
A measured pass from Keeley reached Davis who was unceremoniously fouled by Kazeem on the right edge of the box and Kane's curling free kick grazed the bar, with Anang well beaten.
Pats improved after the introduction of Ardee native Kian Leavy, who was typically industrious and clever in possession, but still the chances came Drogheda's way and Oluwa was close with a header before big claims for a penalty for a foul on Davis were ignored by referee Kevin O'Sullivan.
Pats sub Barry Baggley nearly stole all three points for his death in the 89th minute, though, with a 30-yard strike that Luke Dennison did very well to turn round the post.

Eamon Dunphy changes tune on Hallgrimsson as he backs Ireland for World Cup play-off ‘if not more' after Senegal draw

EAMON DUNPHY seems to have changed his tune on Heimir Hallgrimsson following Ireland's draw with Senegal. It could have been more, with Eamon Dunphy has been a vocal critic of Hallgrimsson, But after Friday's draw, he praised the Icelander for making Ireland hard to beat against a side ranked 19th in the world. Read More on Ireland MNT "They were easy on the eye, too, and easy to like, producing a display that reminded you of everything we like to pride ourselves on as a football nation." Dunphy singled out midfield pair Will Smallbone and Jason Knight for praise, in particular. star Smallbone was tidy on the ball while Bristol City's Knight demonstrated energy and tenacity off of it. Most read in Football Dunphy believes Ireland may have found their ideal partnership which he claimed has filled a void that needed filling. He said: "All this was needed because for the last little while it has become clear that we have an outstanding goalkeeper in Caoimhin Kelleher, several top class defenders, and three outstanding forwards. Heimir Hallgrimsson gives first call-up to four Ireland players in squad for friendlies vs Senegal and Luxembourg "But another uncomfortable truth was that we struggled in midfield. "Not last night because a change in personnel resulted in a change in attitude and a change in performance." Ireland will face Luxembourg in another friendly next Tuesday which will serve as a warm-up before the The Boys in Green host That will be followed by games home and away against Results elsewhere on Friday night gave Dunphy promise for the qualifiers , with Hungary and Armenia losing to But Dunphy remains bullish, declaring that Ireland can bag a play-off for a place at the 2026 World Cup - at minimum. He added: "I'm not shaking with fear at the idea of facing any of those sides. "There is reason to believe and that faith stems from the gradual progress this team has made and most of all from the growth of our two midfielders, Smallbone and Knight, who know how to press, how to win the ball, how to deny the other team space . So it is not unrealistic to say a World Cup play off is now attainable - if not more.

Adam Idah promoted to lead Ireland's attack against Senegal

Adam Idah will lead the line for Ireland in tonight's friendly against Senegal, promoted from the bench after his match-winner last time out. Idah's late volley completed a 4-2 aggregate victory in the March Uefa Nations League playoff against Bulgaria. His celebration and post-match comments spoke of his disappointment at missing out on the starting line-up and his plea has been heard by Heimir Hallgrímsson. The Icelander has opted for the Celtic man ahead of both Evan Ferguson and Troy Parrott. He's also handed first starts to Jack Taylor and Kasey McAteer in what seems to be a 4-2-3-1 formation. Will Smallbone returns to function as the No 10 behind Idah. Senegal, ranked 19 in the world, have left Nicolas Jackson on the bench as they rotate their squad for the double-header friendly culminating on Tuesday in Nottingham against England. FAI finances made Hallgrimsson's home-based Ireland team dream impossible as Josh Honohan given chance to wave LOI flag

HEIMIR Hallgrimsson declared last July that he hoped to bring together a home-based Ireland team in the winter to assess League of Ireland players. At the time, the Icelander said: 'Even if it gives only one player or two players for the next Fifa national team window, it is worth it.' His idea was coolly received by the clubs — who did not want players playing out of season — and by the cash-strapped FAI. Ireland women's manager Carla Ward had to clear it with her bosses that she could bring 24 rather than 23 players into her camp for last week's games. So a whole new men's team was not financially viable. But Shamrock Rovers' Josh Honohan is in the Ireland squad for tonight's game with Senegal and Tuesday's match with Luxembourg.
