Impressive Drogheda United put on a show in front of Irish boss Heimir Hallgrimsson

ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC 0
Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson saw no goals on his first-ever visit to Sullivan & Lambe Park but witnessed further evidence of the high standards in the League of Ireland's top flight as Drogheda United and St Patrick's played out an entertaining stalemate on Monday evening.
After this performance by the home side we can surely expect to see the Icelander at a few more Drogs matches in the coming months, and why wouldn't he because if he wants to see the cream of the crop in the domestic league then this is the place to be!
Drogheda's high press almost yielded instant dividends as Warren Davis nearly dispossessed Tom Grivosti and his keeper Joseph Anang in the opening seconds, with the bounce of the ball favouring Pats. Then Darragh Markey pickpocketed Chris Forrester and worked the ball forward to Thomas Oluwa and the striker's cross reached Owen Lambe who flashed a shot just over the bar.
Next to try his luck for the league leaders was Shane Farrell whose free kick struck the defensive wall after Davis had drawn a foul from Pat's full-back Al-Amin Kazeem.
Oluwa then caught former Drogs defender Joe Redmond napping with his lightning pace and was clean through on goal for a moment before the Pats captain got back to nick the ball away.
Drogs skipper Ryan Brennan was lucky to escape uninjured after taking a blow to the face from the boot of Ryan McLaughlin - a challenge that surely warranted at least a yellow card - and it was Brennan who nearly raised the roof with an audacious scissors kick that unfortunately he couldn't direct on target.
Pats' only real goal attempt of the first half came on 28 minutes - an off-target long-range header from Redmond - but seconds later Drogheda almost scored as Conor Kane, Markey and Davis were involved in a move which ended with a Farrell 25-yard drive that Anang tipped over the bar.
Bolger and Farrell both had attempts stopped by the big Pats keeper and Bolger headed another half-chance well wide at the near post from a Lambe delivery.
A measured pass from Keeley reached Davis who was unceremoniously fouled by Kazeem on the right edge of the box and Kane's curling free kick grazed the bar, with Anang well beaten.
Pats improved after the introduction of Ardee native Kian Leavy, who was typically industrious and clever in possession, but still the chances came Drogheda's way and Oluwa was close with a header before big claims for a penalty for a foul on Davis were ignored by referee Kevin O'Sullivan.
Pats sub Barry Baggley nearly stole all three points for his death in the 89th minute, though, with a 30-yard strike that Luke Dennison did very well to turn round the post.
Drogheda: Luke Dennison 7; Andrew Quinn 8, Conor Keeley 8, James Bolger 8; Owen Lambe 8 (Elicha Ahui 87), Ryan Brennan 8 (Luke Heeney 63, 7), Shane Farrell 8, Conor Kane 8; Darragh Markey 8; Warren Davis 8, Thomas Oluwa 8. Sligo Rovers' Patrick McClean has red card against St Pat's overturned on appeal

PATRICK MCCLEAN IS free to play for Sligo Rovers in their next League of Ireland Premier Division fixture after his controversial red card against St Patrick's Athletic on Sunday was overturned. With the game level at 0-0 at Richmond Park, Rovers were reduced to 10 men when McClean received a straight red card for a foul on Mason Melia despite clearly not being the last defender, with Sebastian Quirk in position to cover. Advertisement Referee Damien MacGraith's misinterpretation of the situation saw him send off McClean, with Pats going on to win the game 3-0 against 10 men. The result left Sligo Rovers just seven points above bottom-placed Cork City in the race to avoid relegation. The League of Ireland today confirmed that Sligo Rovers' appeal for wrongful dismissal against McClean had been upheld by an independent appeal committee of the FAI, which means the Derry-born centre-back will no longer be suspended for one league match. McClean, the 28-year-old younger brother of Republic of Ireland centurion James McClean, returned to Sligo Rovers in June after seven years with Derry City and Glentoran. He has been a standout performer for John Russell's side since his arrival from Glentoran this summer for an undisclosed fee, scoring two goals from centre-back in his five appearances to date.

Yasmin Canning and Colin Dyas lead the Drogheda & District AC challenge in top-class Carlingford 5K

Conditions were near perfect for racing - dry, calm and a comfortable 15 to 16 degrees - and the fast, flat, out-and-back course attracted a top-class field, resulting in a thrilling contest from start to finish. A total of 556 runners crossed the line, cheered on by a lively crowd and rewarded afterwards with generous refreshments in the local parochial hall - a Glenmore AC tradition warmly appreciated by all. Drogheda & District AC athletes were to the fore throughout the evening, producing a string of strong performances. Colin Dyas continued his rich vein of form from the previous week's Duleek 10K, finishing an impressive 18th in 15:54 - a personal best by two seconds amidst elite competition. One of the standout performances came from Paul Kierans who stormed home in 16:42, a superb result that turned plenty of heads on the night. Close behind was Rodney Thornton in 16:46, a very solid showing in such a deep field. Barry Foley, a relatively new face on the road racing scene, ran a brilliant 17:39, closely followed by club pacer Paul Smith. Further down the field, Thomas Breen delivered a strong 18:39, with Fatih Zitouche just behind in 18:57 and Ciarán Maree running an excellent 19:02, continuing to show great promise. Veteran Paddy Murphy claimed a well-deserved silver medal in his category with a sharp 19:10, while Colm Prone (19:19) and Shaun Conroy (19:21) both continued their steady upward progress. Among the women, Yasmin Canning was the club's top performer, finishing in 20:26 and also earning a silver medal in her age group. Anna Isgro wasn't far behind, clocking 20:52 with a strong run. The evening also featured a juvenile race, where Beatrice Cunningham delivered a sensational performance to take victory, and she is another exciting young talent to watch. There were a couple of impressive runs elsewhere at the Kells Heritage 5K last Friday evening as Olivia Reilly clocked 24.37 and sister Aisling Reilly finished a few minutes behind in 27:37. Joe Carroll had a terrific run at the Inner City 5K in Dublin, running the 5K distance in 21:02, while Jimmy English was seventh in his heat in the Men's 400m race at the National Senior Track & Field Championships at Morton Stadium in Santry.

Drab stalemate in Waterford clash leaves Drogheda United feeling blue

Dropped points elsewhere by Bohemians, Shelbourne and Derry City limited the damage to Drogheda United's European aspirations following this disappointing draw against Waterford at Sullivan & Lambe Park on Friday night. In a game of few chances the Boynesiders did rack up their fourth consecutive clean sheet, but they were lacking in quality at the opposite end of the pitch against the joint worst defence in the Premier Division and failed to test Stephen McMullan in the Waterford goal all evening. Opposition boss John Coleman had said in the build-up to this game that he'd be trying to do to Drogheda what they did to Bohs the previous week, in other words defending resiliently and then trying to hit them on the break, and Waterford will be well pleased with their night's work despite failing to complete the job by snatching a shock winner. The Boynesiders began brightly enough and in the fourth minute Darragh Markey had a shot blocked and Shane Farrell's follow-up from distance grazed the crossbar. Oluwa then sent a looping header just too high from Markey's floated cross, before Conor Kane and Markey combined to put Oluwa down the left flank and he cut the ball back to Owen Lambe whose shot was blocked by Ryan Burke. Oluwa then got on the end of a lovely floated pass by Shane Farrell and cut inside before sending a tame shot straight into the hands of McMullan. At the other end Lambe gave away possession cheaply and from the resulting Waterford attack the ball sat up nicely for Conan Noonan and his half-volley was superbly turned away by keeper Luke Dennison. Just past the half-hour mark, Oluwa pick-pocketed Burke and took off down the pitch and had a two-on-one situation as Josh Thomas came up in support, but the former Wexford striker went for goal himself and his shot was brilliantly blocked away for a corner by last man Kyle White. Oluwa had a couple of other half-chances coming up to half-time, and just after the break James Bolger's pass released Lambe in behind the Waterford defence and he squared towards Thomas whose low shot lacked power as McMullan again made a routine save. A similar effort at the other end by former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Jordan Dennison mwas easily gathered by Dennison, but Drogheda continued to have the upper hand and Oluwa fired an angled effort into the side netting after an assist from Conor Keeley, before Keeley himself hooked over the bar. ADVERTISEMENT The longer the game went on, though, the more Waterford seemed to grow in confidence and the final quarter was an evenly contested affair. Tommy Lonergan had a sight of goal in the 71st minute as he drifted infield, but Andrew Quinn did just enough to put off the former St Pat's man whose shot flew well wide. Lonergan then headed just over the bar from a Noonan corner, before Padraig Amond glanced a header straight into the hands of Dennison. Drogheda threatened from a couple of corner kicks in stoppage time, but Waterford defended gamely and ultimately were good value for a rare point on the road. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison 7; James Bolger 8, Conor Keeley 8, Andrew Quinn8 ; Owen Lambe 6, Ryan Brennan 8, Shane Farrell 8 (John O'Sullivan 77min, 6), Conor Kane 7; Darragh Markey 7, Thomas Oluwa 6 (Dare Kareem 85min), Josh Thomas 6 (Warren Davis 62min, 6).
