Robbie Keane reacts to Mikey Johnston talk live on Brazilian sports show

Irish Daily Mirror11 hours ago
Robbie Keane has told a Brazilian sports show that Ireland winger Mikey Johnston can be a hit at Serie A leaders Flamengo.
Ferencvaros head coach Keane was called out of the blue by his former Inter Milan teammate Vampeta, a co-host of Jovem Pan Esportes.
The pair were signed around the same time in the summer of 2000, and both left that winter - Keane to Leeds United on-loan and Vampeta to Paris St Germain.
Keane, with 14 appearances, played twice as many games as his Brazilian pal.
The call began with Vampeta asking Keane how he was, before passing the phone over to co-host Pilhado, who quizzed the former Ireland skipper in English.
Keane added that Johnston was getting 'better and better' as a player.
Johnston was on Saturday linked with a sensational €6m move to Flamengo, who are currently top of the Brazilian Serie A.
West Brom are currently in Austria for a pre-season training camp, but Johnston has not joined his teammates, according to the latest reporting in the Express and Star.
Baggies officials are working on the potential move and Johnston is expected in Brazil this week to finalise the deal.
It would be a most remarkable transfer, with Johnston becoming the first Irish player to line out in Brazil's top-flight.
Keane last week was involved in another surprise move by a Boys in Green star, when he signed Callum O'Dowda to his Hungarian champions from Cardiff City.
Here's how the conversation with Jovem Pan Esportes went…
Vampeta: 'Hello Keane, amigo, how are you?'
Robbie Keane: 'How are you?'
Vampeta: Fine
Keane: Yeah, are you good?
Vampeta: Yes, good man.
Keane: How are you my friend?
Vampeta: Fine. One minute please.
Pilhado: Hi, I'm Vampeta's friend, how are you? Let me ask a question. We are in a programme in Brazil live, I want to know, do you know Mike Johnston, a striker from Ireland?
Keane: Yeah, Michael, he's a winger, a left-winger, he's really small and fast.
Pilhado: (Translates answer) But let me ask you something, he is a good name for Flamengo, a Brazilian team here?
Keane: 'I'm with my Brazilian (fades out, but likely referring to Ferencvaros assistant coach Leandro de Almeida)... The fans will like him, because he is really fast and skillful.
Pilhado: 'Do you think he is a good player for a big team in Brazil?
Keane: 'Yeah, I think he is getting better and better. Also, he is a good guy.
Pilhado: 'Thank you so much. Vampeta tells me he loves you.'
Keane: 'Tell him I love him.'
Pilhado: 'Roberto Carlos is with us also.'
Keane: 'Ah, Roberto, my best friend. I love him.'
Pilhado: 'Thank you so much.'
Keane: 'Ciao guys.'

Farrell names eight Ireland players in Lions team as he opts for strong side

Andy Farrell has named eight Ireland players in his strongest British and Irish Lions team yet, with Wednesday's clash against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra looking like a rehearsal for the first Test against Australia. Maro Itoje will captain the side, partnering with Joe McCarthy in the second row. The starting XV includes several players considered to be first choice, such as half-backs Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell. Adding some flair from the bench are back-rower Henry Pollock and versatile playmaker Marcus Smith. Both England stars have the chance to demonstrate their readiness to face the Wallabies on 19 July. Pollock was set to start in Saturday's shaky 21-10 win over the New South Wales Waratahs but pulled out shortly before kick-off due to a tight calf. He has since recovered from the injury. The all-Irish centre pairing of Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose has been selected, while Blair Kinghorn will make his first start at full-back after joining the squad late due to his Top 14 commitments with Toulouse. Tommy Freeman and James Lowe are tipped to take up the wing positions against Australia in Brisbane, both featuring in the line-up, with Mack Hansen providing additional back-three cover from the bench against his former Super Rugby franchise. Ellis Genge, the standout loosehead prop on tour, and Tadhg Furlong, a three-time Lions tourist, will be starting on either side of the scrum. Furlong is looking to regain his match-fitness after a season plagued by calf and hamstring injuries. Dan Sheehan has been selected as hooker. Tom Curry, usually an unstoppable force, has struggled to hit his stride Down Under but has been given the openside role in a back row that includes Ollie Chessum, who provides a crucial line-out option. Jack Conan is set to play at number eight, with Chessum likely providing second-row cover should Itoje or McCarthy suffer injuries, given that flankers Josh van der Flier and Pollock are named on the bench. The starting XV comprises eight players from Ireland, five from England and two from Scotland, with no room for Welsh openside Jac Morgan in the 23-man squad. The Brumbies, who reached the Super Rugby semi-finals before losing 37-17 to the Chiefs on June 14, are the toughest team the Lions will face in Australia outside of the Tests. Head coach Farrell acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying: "In 2013 the Brumbies beat the Lions in Canberra and this year they were the leading Australian team in Super Rugby – so we are fully aware of the challenge in front of us,". He also highlighted the special occasion for Mack Hansen, who will be returning to his home town to represent the Lions against some of his former team-mates. Lions line-up: B Kinghorn (Toulouse/Scotland); T Freeman (Northampton Saints/England), G Ringrose (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), B Aki (Connacht Rugby/Ireland), J Lowe (Leinster Rugby/Ireland); F Russell (Bath Rugby/Scotland), J Gibson-Park (Leinster Rugby/Ireland); E Genge (Bristol Bears/England), D Sheehan (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), T Furlong (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), M Itoje (Saracens/England, capt), J McCarthy (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), O Chessum (Leicester Tigers/England), T Curry (Sale Sharks/England), J Conan (Leinster Rugby/Ireland). Substitutes: R Kelleher (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), A Porter (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), W Stuart (Bath Rugby/England), J van der Flier (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), H Pollock (Northampton Saints/England), A Mitchell (Northampton Saints/England), M Smith (Harlequins/England), M Hansen (Connacht Rugby/Ireland).

Andy Farrell names Test-ready starting line-up for British & Irish Lions clash against Brumbies

Andy Farrell has named a Test-ready starting line-up for the British & Irish Lions clash against the Brumbies in Australia's capital on Wednesday. The Lions head coach has played his strongest hand to date for a tour match just 10 days ahead of the first Test against the Wallabies with Maro Itoje captaining at lock in a second-row partnership alongside Ireland's Joe McCarthy. There are combinations throughout the XV which have the look of Test selections as England loosehead prop Ellis Genge forms a front row with Irish duo Dan Sheehan at hooker and Tadhg Furlong at tighthead while scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park partners fly-half Finn Russell at half-back and the back three features Blair Kinghorn at full-back alongside wings Tommy Freeman and James Lowe. Farrell will not back himself into a corner by calling this his first Test team and an all-Irish centre partnership of Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose appears to be the latest midfield combination up for audition, while the back row sees Tom Curry start at openside flanker for the first time on this tour with hybrid lock/flanker Ollie Chessum on the blindside with Jack Conan at No.8. Read More Scratchy Lions win has simplified the Test selection equation for Farrell The rest of the squad will be assured Test places remain up for grabs across the next two games and Wednesday night's bench, including former Brumbie Mack Hansen named as outside back cover, will be keen to stake their claims. It is a strong set of replacements with a covering front row of Andrew Porter, Ronan Kelleher and Will Stuart, and two back rowers in Josh van der Flier and a fit-again Henry Pollock while Alex Mitchell is the scrum-half replacement alongside fellow Englishman Marcus Smith and Hansen. The Brumbies, coached by Stephen Larkham, will be missing eight of their Wallabies for their big night at GIO Stadium but back row Tom Hooper has been released by Joe Schmidt to face the Lions and could play alongside 21-year-old younger brother Lachie Hooper for the first time as professionals if the latter is sprung from the bench. BRUMBIES: A Muirhead; B O'Donnell, O Sapsford, D Feliuai, C Toole; D Meredith, R Lonergan – captain; L Ieli, L Lonergan, R van Nek; L Shaw, C Neville; T Hooper, R Scott, T Taii Tualima. Replacements: L Bowron, C Orr, F Fotuaika, L Hooper, L Reimer, H Goddard, J Debreczini, H Creighton. BRITISH & IRISH LIONS: B Kinghorn; T Freeman, G Ringrose, B Aki, J Lowe; F Russell, J Gibson-Park; E Genge, D Sheehan, T Furlong; M Itoje – captain, J McCarthy; O Chessum, T Curry, J Conan. Replacements: R Kelleher, A Porter, W Stuart, J van der Flier, H Pollock, A Mitchell, M Smith, M Hansen.
