American in UK admits she 'now gets' why Brits always moan about one thing
An American woman living in the UK has shared she's been 'humbled' by an inescapable aspect of the country that many people in her homeland can't understand – the heat. The recent spell of heatwaves up and down the UK has had lots of people feeling deeply uncomfortable.
Of course, many states in the US are hotter on average than the UK, but houses and buildings in England weren't built to withstand the rising temperatures caused by the ongoing climate crisis. England is famous for being grey and rainy - our architecture was designed to keep the heat in.
While the summer season has always brought some sunshine and brighter weeks, in recent years, the humidity and relentlessly high temperatures have taken over, leaving countless people suffering in inescapably hot homes - with no air conditioning.
Texas -born Bonnie Langthorn has been living in the UK for the last three years and, in the wake of the recent heatwaves, she decided to confess how she's been 'humbled' by the weather here.
In a recent video, which she shared on TikTok, Bonnie said: 'As a Texas native, I used to make so much fun of people in Europe complaining about heat.
'Like, any time it gets above 75 degrees (24°C), everyone's having a meltdown and I was like, 'have you experienced 105 (40°C)?'
'But now that I live in England and I have experienced summer here, let me just tell you, I have been humbled because the thing is, yeah, the temperature is not as high but you also can't escape it.
'There's nowhere to go. If you go inside, it's almost worse than if you just stay outside because at least outside, there's a breeze.
'Inside, you're just sitting in still, hot air and yeah, you might stand in front of a fan and let it blow hot air on your face pretending like that's making any difference but I can tell you, it doesn't.'
Bonnie then went on to say that in Texas, there's air con in multiple places which allows people to cool down dramatically and end up 'shivering in no time'.
She added: 'But here, there's like nowhere to hide. You get on the tube, it's hot; you get on the bus, it's hot; you get off the bus, it's still hot; you go inside, it's still hot.
'Everywhere is so hot and you're just sweating all the time. So, never again will I judge a European for complaining about the heat because the heat's different. It's just different.'
Bonnie's video racked up more than 1,000 comments from people keen to share their thoughts. One person admitted: 'My favourite summer content is foreigners being humbled by UK heat'.
Another said: 'you found a breeze? I'm still looking…'
A third added: 'It's also the humidity, the heat sticks to you, there is a night and day difference between arid heat and humid heat'.
Another commented: 'So many videos from Americans, Australians and people from the Middle East saying sorry [crying laughing emoji] our summer heat is terrible in England, you can't escape the humidity'.
Someone else said: '100F in London is like the seventh circle of hell. That I can attest to'.
Another added: 'And it doesn't cool down at night! People ALWAYS forget that'.

Heatwave and wildfire warnings hit Europe: Where is at risk and how to stay safe
Spain and Portugal is under a state of alert, with another heatwave triggering more wildfire warnings across the region. While the UK has been lashed by Storm Floris, other European countries have been battling extremely high temperatures. UK tourists travelling abroad are advised to plan ahead and be aware of the risk of fires in parts of Europe. What areas are affected by the heatwave? Spain's State Meteorological Agency issued warnings to 12 areas, with high temperatures expected to continue until at least orange alert level, which indicates a significant risk, has been issued in Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid with temperatures expected to hit 42 degrees. The slightly less severe yellow level alert is in place in Aragon, Cantabria, Castile and León, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country and La Rioja. In Portugal, five regions are under red alert due to hot weather while most of the country is under an orange warning with temperatures expected to hit 40 Portugal has also entered a state of alert due to the high risk of fire in the coming days. Elsewhere, high temperature warnings have been issued for Sardinia in Italy and parts of southern Romania. Where is the risk of wildfires? According to the European Forest Fire Information System, extreme conditions and wildfire risk are forecast for the next seven days across the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, the Mediterranean coast -including southern Italy, the Balkans and Greece - Bulgaria and Romania. Over the past few days, thousands of firefighters have battled blazes in central and western Spain and in the north of Portugal. Authorities are worried the fires could be reignited in the current heatwave. Wildfires in Southwestern Bulgaria are also still smoldering after the country's largest fire in years destroyed 4,500 hectares of land and forest. So far this year, wildfires have raged in Europe, including in Turkey, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Spain, Portugal and France. Already this year 1,478 fires have been detected across Europe, compared with 1,030 fires in the same period last year. How can you look after yourself in the heat? The main health risks from a heatwave are dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. According to the NHS, the people most at risk of heat-related illnesses are people over the age of 75, babies and children, and people with serious or long-term health conditions including heart or lung issues, diabetes, kidney disease and Parkinson's disease. For British tourists travelling to these locations, the medical advice is to keep out of the heat as much as possible. If you are outside, stick to the shade, wear sunscreen and light, loose clothing and avoid alcohol, caffeine and activity that increases your heat. It is also important to cool yourself down with cold drinks, taking a cool shower or putting cool water on your skin and clothes. Have heatwaves been worse this year? Many heat records have been broken across western Europe this year, with heatwaves showing no signs of easing yet. But even typically colder Nordic countries have experienced long periods of hot weather this summer. Helsinki's record-breaking heatwave saw the city live through 22 consecutive days of temperatures above 30 degrees this summer, the record for consecutive days over 30 degrees was 13 days in a row during June–July in 1972.

Spider-Man filming in Glasgow faces being plunged into chaos as Storm Floris hurtles towards Scotland

Onlookers at the set on Bothwell Street — transformed into New York for the latest flick in the blockbuster Marvel movie series — were treated to a big bang tank chase, complete with American cop cars. But it is feared Storm Floris — carrying with it an amber alert 'threat to life' warning — will force filming for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to be shelved today. An insider said: 'There's talk it will be suspended because of the high winds and storm. 'Some parts of the set have already been blown over, but we'll need to wait and see what happens. You can't really have people hanging from things when there are strong winds.' The Met Office said: 'Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected, and are likely to reach 80 to 90 mph on exposed coasts, hills and bridges.' The Met Office has warned that Storm Floris is expected to bring gusts of up to 90mph tomorrow morning. The amber alert for "unseasonably strong and disruptive winds" is in place from 10am until 10pm, covering the central belt, Tayside, Grampian, Strathclyde, Lothian Borders and Highlands. It's the second-highest warning possible, made more dangerous by the fact that trees are still in leaf and more liable to collapse. Injuries and danger to life could also occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties. The Met Office said: "Storm Floris will bring a spell of unusually strong west or northwesterly winds to much of Scotland during Monday. 'Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected for many parts, and are likely to reach 80 to 90 mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges. 'Western coastal areas will see the highest gusts between late morning and early afternoon, the strongest winds then transferring to northeastern Scotland by late afternoon/early evening.' Filming for the new Spider-Man movie has already seen several intense stunts being captured this weekend as locals gathered to watch the action. Earlier today, Spider-Man stood on top of a tank as it flew down Bothwell Street in a chaotic car stunt. TOP FILMING LOCATION THE flick has brought movie-fever to Glasgow once again, with some punters dressed as Spider-Man putting in an appearance. Holland, 29, returns as the titular character, with real-life girlfriend Zendaya, 28, as Michelle Jones "MJ" Watson, Jon Bernthal, 48, portraying The Punisher, and Charlie Cox, 42, as Daredevil. Filming is set to move further along into Merchant City after Wednesday, August 13, with scenes are also expected to be shot on Glassford Street and Virginia Street. It is just the latest lot of filming taking place in Glasgow. Earlier this year, Hollywood hunk Glen Powell filmed scenes for sci-fi flick Ghost Writer on Bothwell Street. It is his second time in the city in a year, as he filmed on the exact same street for the remake of 80's hit Running Man in November. World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt, 61, previously used George Square to represent Philadelphia, while the city was also transformed into Gotham City for Batgirl and The Batman. And the Merchant City got turned into 1960's New York for a parade chase scene in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. A huge scaffolding structure safety rig was set up around the tank for Spider-Man to be harnessed in as he stood on the roof. Three New York-style police cars followed in hot pursuit as they sped down the road with their lights flashing behind him. And on Saturday, a huge chase scene saw cars thrown into the air as a huge crowd watched. A black film car raced ahead of the tank as it rumbled down the road, and a taxi and a van attached to hydraulic ramps were thrown into the air as the war machine sped past. A high-tech drone with a camera attached was zooming overhead to get aerial shots of the stunt as the tank came to a screeching halt at the bottom of the street. Glasgow now resembles the Big Apple for Holland's latest MCU appearance. Historic street signs have been covered with decor from Manhattan, while hot dog carts and newsstands are scattered among the streets. Movie vehicles are also being stored on West Campbell Street. The road has been lined with an ambulance and New York Fire Department pick-up truck, as well as scores of iconic New York yellow taxis and NYPD police cars. Glasgow City Council told the Scottish Sun that production crews would make the decision on whether filming would go ahead. XM2 could not comment when approached by the Scottish Sun.
