Week-long Ganga Jathara begins today
Tirupati: Stage is set for the colourful week-long Tatayyagunta Gangamma Jathara, which will take off on Tuesday. The Jathara will start with traditional 'Chatimpu', which will be held early in the morning on Tuesday, which will be followed by a series of religious events.
Devotees wearing various attires will offer prayers to Gangamma during the seven days fete. The attires include Bairagi Vesham (May 7), Banda Vesham (May 8), Thoti Vesham (May 9), Dora Vesham (May 10), Mathangi Vesham (May 11), Sunnapu Kundalu (May 12), and Jathara (May 13). The festival will conclude with Viswaroopa darshanam on the early morning of Wednesday (May 14).
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Narapureddy Mourya along with various departments officials on Monday visited, giving final touches to the preparations. She directed the officials of town planning department to ensure the shop keepersnot to encroach roads and see devotees proceed to the temples without any hindrance. In the vegetable market, which was earmarked for women devotees to prepare Pongallu to offer to the Goddess, the health department take all steps for round the clock sanitation and cleaning.
The Commissioner said cultural programmes will also be held daily during the Jathara adding more to the spiritual tempo. Regarding parking, Mourya said TUDA office campus should be allotted for VIP parking and no vehicles should be allowed beyond YSR statue at TUDA junction. She also inspected the additional queue lines set up to cope with the heavy rush of devotees expected during the Jathara. She urged the officials to ensure no inconvenience to common devotees and all basic facilities including drinking water should be made available round the clock.

Chittoor MLA for curbing plastic usage
Chittoor: Environment protection is the responsibility of every citizen and people should voluntarily involve in planting saplings, stated Chittoor MLA Gurajala Jagan Mohan. On Thursday, he participated in the World Environment Day and Vanamahotsavam organised by forest department in Chittoor. The MLA said maintaining ecological balance is essential for human survival and wanted the people to reduce plastic usage to the minimum. Stating that raising temperatures are the result of deforestation, he said by taking up tree plantation in a big way we can save the environment. Students should take up planting trees in their schools and colleges to improve greenery. DFO Bharani said that following the government directions, the forest department targeted to plant 30 lakh saplings in Chittoor district. Deputy Mayor Rajesh Kumar Reddy, NGO Representatives, students participated in the programme. Meanwhile in Tirupati, 'Safeguarding our environment is the only way for human survival and a disease-free society,' stated city MLA Arani Srinivasulu. On World Environment Day, along with Corporation Commissioner N Mourya and Greenery and Beautification Chairman M Sugunamma, he participated in a mass plantation drive held at Seethamma Nagar here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Srinivasulu said that efforts are on to ensure a clean and tidy environment, keeping in view of the large number of pilgrims visiting the pilgrim city daily. With an aim to protect the environment, the corporation has planned to plant 5,090 saplings in the city to mark World Environment Day. He said it is the responsibility of women and youth to see that the saplings will grow. Stating that this year's World Environment Day theme is 'Beat the plastic pollution', the MLA urged people to stop using single use plastic and also ban plastic items to save humans and animals. Greenery and Beautification Chairman Sugunamma said the government is keen on containing plastic menace and plans are afoot to make cities and towns plastic free. Commissioner Mourya said under TUDA limits, plantation of 15,000 saplings is taken up and the administration is determined to make pilgrim city Tirupati plastic free by promoting cloth and paper bags. Additional Commissioner Charan Tej Reddy, Deputy Commissioner Amaraiah, SE Syam Sundar, ME Thulasi Kumar, Health Officer Dr Yuva Anvesh Reddy, RO Sethu Madhav, ACP Balaji and others were present.

Mohali civic body to spend Rs 80 lakh on renting pumps again
Despite repeated failure to provide relief to people in the rainy season, the Mohali Municipal Corporation is once again relying on the same drainage system involving pumps, which has proven ineffective in the past. This time, it plans to rent tractor-mounted de-watering pumps at a cost of Rs 80 lakh for a period of three months. This move has drawn criticism not only from the public but also from several municipal councillors. To date, the Municipal Corporation has failed to implement a lasting solution to waterlogging. The same temporary pump-based system, which failed last year when pumps stopped working mid-rain, is being proposed again. Councillors argue that the amount being spent could be better utilised in establishing a permanent drainage solution. According to residents, areas like Phase 3B2, 4, 5, Phase 11, and Sectors 70 and 71 experience severe flooding each monsoon. Parts of Phase 1 are also significantly affected, leading to major inconvenience and financial losses for residents. In response, the corporation plans to install the rented pumps in these areas and deploy personnel to ensure immediate drainage during rainfall. In 2016, the MC appointed a team of PEC engineers to address the issue of water logging. The team pointed out flaws in the city's old drainage system and recommended laying 26 km of new pipelines with diameters ranging from 80–100 mm. They also suggested installing a rainwater harvesting system and channeling excess water into the seasonal rivulet, Patiala Ki Rao. However, despite the passage of nine years, the MC has taken no action on the report. As a result, low-lying areas remain affected, and during every monsoon, homes and streets are repeatedly flooded, causing residents continuous inconvenience and financial losses amounting to lakhs of rupees. What Officials Say In this regard, when several attempts were made to contact Commissioner Municipal Council Parminder Pal Singh, he could not be contacted on the phone. Amrik Singh Somal, Senior Deputy Mayor & councillor, Sector 71 'GMADA has not been cooperating in resolving this issue. In fact, they raised the levels of Airport Road and the Kumbhra-Balongi Road, which has caused rainwater to flood into sectors 70 and 71. We demand permission to lay pipelines up to the Kumbhra Light Point to enable proper drainage and offer a permanent solution.' Kuljit Singh Bedi, Deputy Mayor & councillor, Phase 3B2: 'This issue arises every year, causing immense trouble to residents. While a permanent solution is still pending, renting pumps is currently the only option for temporary relief. Unfortunately, this has become an annual compulsion.' Baljit Kaur, councillor, Phase 5 'After the construction of a causeway on the Phase 5 road, some relief was observed in the HIG and 7.5 marla belts. However, the 10 marla belt continues to suffer from rainwater accumulation. The best solution is to install direct pipelines to the Balongi drain.' Rupinder Kaur Reena, councillor, Phase 4 'Renting pumps is a waste of public money. Instead of spending such a large amount on temporary equipment, a causeway should be constructed on the dividing road. It would cost less and solve the problem effectively.' Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu 'A comprehensive drainage project worth Rs 200 crore has been planned after conducting a survey. However, this project is beyond the financial scope of the Municipal Corporation. We have written to the government for financial assistance. Once the funds are received, we will begin work to ensure a permanent solution to the city's waterlogging issue.'

Call to participate in Yogandhra programme
Eluru: District joint collector P Dhatri Reddy has appealed to the people of Eluru district to participate in the International Yoga Day to be held on June 21 on a large scale. On Sunday, the joint collector held a meeting with the relevant officials here on the organisation of the Yogandhra programme. Speaking on the occasion, she said that 200 master trainees have already been trained in the district, and they have instructed the relevant officials to actively undertake the programme of training 10 more trainees in each secretariat. As many as 5,445 yoga trainees should be made available at the mandal level. Yogandhra competitions should be organised at the village, mandal and district levels. They should be organised at the village and ward levels from May 26th to 30th, at the mandal level from June 2nd to 7th, and at the district level from June 9th to 14th. Regarding the Rangoli competitions, she said that district officers of the respective departments have been appointed to organise competitions in each field under the auspices of ICDS and the Department of Education for students. Yoga programmes should be organised every day from 7 am to 8 am under the auspices of the Municipal Corporation and respective department-wise. Yoga streets should be set up in the remaining municipalities and yoga programmes should be organised without disrupting traffic. Similarly, to show the importance of Yogandhra, everyone should register through QR code or web to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21st. She said that a target of registering about 8 lakh people in the district has been set. Accordingly, the concerned officials were advised to intensify the registration process. She clarified that on June 21st, people can participate in the programmes at the yoga centres set up near village and ward secretariats. The district joint collector said that everyone should register through QR code or website with the aim of large-scale participation of the people of Eluru district.
