Man nabbed for stealing $16k gold chain, carrying folding knife
The victim had listed the gold chain for sale on Carousell, and had arranged to meet a potential buyer.
SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old man will be charged in court on Aug 12 for allegedly stealing a $16,400 gold chain and carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
The police said on Aug 11 that they received a call for help along Commonwealth Avenue West on Aug 10 at about 10.35pm.
The victim had listed the gold chain for sale on e-commerce platform Carousell, and had arranged to meet a potential buyer along Clementi Avenue 4, said the police.
During the meet-up, when the victim placed the gold chain on a weighing machine to show its weight, the suspect, under the pretext of examining the item more closely, took the gold chain and fled.
The victim, whose age the police did not disclose, chased after the man and successfully detained him along Commonwealth Avenue West with the assistance of a passer-by.
In addition to the stolen gold chain, a folding knife was found in the suspect's possession, said the police.
The suspect will be charged with the offences of theft and carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.

If found guilty of theft, he can be jailed for up to three years, fined or both.
For the offence of carrying offensive weapons in a public place, he can be jailed for up to three years and receive a minimum of six strokes of the cane.
The passer-by, 57-year-old Lee Yew Thye, was commended by the police at a public-spiritedness award ceremony held at Clementi Police Division on Aug 11 for stepping forward to assist with the arrest and for calling the police for assistance.
He demonstrated civic-mindedness in helping someone in need, said the police.

The police advised members of the public to be alert and attentive to their surroundings when meeting potential buyers or sellers or making transactions in person, especially when carrying valuables or large sums of cash.
They should avoid going to secluded places and report any suspicious persons or activities to the police immediately by calling 999, they said.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tung Shou Pin said: "(Nigel) was shocked but agreed after Kyoshirocaeden repeatedly asked for the accused's help and reassured (him) that he would not be caught." Tan also suggested asking one of Nigel's friends to assist with the crime. Later that evening, they met Lucian, who agreed to their plan. Tan then arranged two meetings with different watch sellers on April 23 and 24, 2024. At both meetings, Lucian and Nigel inspected the watches but did not dare steal them. Instead, they returned each watch to the respective seller. On April 25, Tan used Nigel's Carousell account to arrange a meeting with a Rolex watch owner. The watch owner met the two youths and allowed them to inspect the watch, which was valued at about $47,800. They negotiated and agreed on a price of $46,000. But once again, Nigel and Lucian did not steal the watch and instead said they would think about it. When Nigel told Tan they did not follow through with the scheme, the latter promised to increase his and Lucian's share of the sales proceeds. The two youths met the watch owner again half an hour later. After Lucian was allowed to wear the watch for Nigel to take photographs of it, they ran away from the meeting point in different directions. The watch owner chased but failed to catch them, and called the police. Subsequently, Lucian passed Tan the watch and Tan transferred $5,000 into Nigel's girlfriend's bank account. Nigel did not withdraw his share. Lucian withdrew $1,750 from the sum in the account. Both of them were later arrested. DPP Tung called for Nigel to be sentenced to reformative training, while his lawyer from the Public Defender's Office Vadi PVSS pushed for probation, which would not leave a criminal record. A probation officer had deemed Nigel not suitable for probation based on factors including his previous brushes with the law, for which he received conditional warnings. Mr Vadi said Nigel's previous conditional warnings were not a finding of guilt. "(For) this particular offence, he was under a very unfamiliar circumstance. The stepfather is there hovering over him and making him do certain things. "He's no hardened criminal. He chickened out... he didn't want to do it (at first)," said the lawyer. District Judge Carol Ling found him suitable for a minimum of six months' reformative training instead of probation. She told Nigel that every action comes with consequences. But she added: "It doesn't define who you are, it doesn't determine who you're going to be. There will be fresh chapters of your life written after this."

'A serial predator': Male ex-teacher jailed for trying to engage in sexual acts with 3 teen girls on separate occasions, Singapore News
A former secondary school teacher has been sentenced to jail for targeting three teenage girls and trying to engage in sexual activities with them on separate occasions in 2021. The 33-year-old man, who was referred to as a "sexual predator" by prosecution, pleaded guilty to four charges under the Children and Young Persons Act on Aug 11 and was sentenced to nine months' jail. The man cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the victims' identities. Responding to AsiaOne's queries the Ministry of Education stated that the man is no longer working as a teacher, and stopped working for the ministry in March 2022. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Bryan Wong told the court that the man was posted to the school in 2017 and had given advice to its student councillors. He also regularly received and accepted "follow" requests from students on his personal Instagram account. The man got to know one of the victims when he taught her in Secondary 1. The pair followed each other on Instagram, and she left the school some time before 2021. In April 2021, the man reached out to her via Instagram to ask how she was doing in her studies. He also turned on the "vanish mode" feature in the chats, so their messages would disappear from the platform. During that month, he began sending sexually suggestive text messages to the girl, such as asking her to "fantasise" about him. DPP Wong continued that some time later that month, the accused tried to get the victim, who was 16 years old, to commit an indecent act by "repeatedly suggesting to her that they become 'friends with benefits' — the implication being that they would meet regularly to engage in... sexual acts with each other". The girl rejected his advances and told the man to stop sending her such messages. He later stopped doing so, and she alerted a former teacher from the school about what the man had done. The second victim got to know the man when he taught her in Secondary 4. They also followed each other on Instagram, and she left the school in 2021. In September that year, he asked her to tell him about her "sexual kink" while using Instagram's "vanish mode". The prosecutor said that at a later date, the accused attempted tried to get the victim, who was 17 years old, to commit an indecent act by saying he was willing to have sex with her if she too was open to the idea. "The accused also added that his home was out of bounds, and they could consider renting a room to have sex together," the prosecutor said. This girl also rejected his advances and stopped communicating with him. She later told a former teacher from the school about the man's conduct. Third victim was a student in the school The man had asked the third victim out on Oct 17, 2021, and she agreed to meet him. The man then booked a room at a Tanjong Pagar hotel, and the girl — who was a 15-year-old student councillor in the school he taught at — met him there later that day. The pair were sitting on a bed when he tried to kiss her, but she pushed him and turned her face away. He also asked her to perform a sexual act on him, but she refused. The man eventually placed the girl's hand over his private parts, and she pulled her hand away. DPP Wong said: "The accused stopped after realising his actions made the victim feel uncomfortable... He eventually drove her to her home in his own vehicle." On or around Oct 21, 2021, the man continued to send the girl sexually charged messages. She deleted her Instagram account. He left the school in December that year. However, the man messaged the third victim via Telegram in early 2022 to apologise for his actions at the hotel. He told her that reports had been filed against him over the inappropriate messages he had sent to the other students. A few days later, the girl told the school about her own experience. DPP Wong told the court that the victim had reported a difficulty in forming romantic relationships with others. "She reported taking 30 days of medical leave per semester and having to take sleeping pills to cope with stress." "She would also often cry in school. This incident has severely impacted her ability to study and will have lasting ramifications on her prospects," he added. The man's bail was set at $20,000 on Aug 11 and he is expected to begin serving his sentence on Sept 1. [[nid:720017]]
