Conversations about hustle culture and toxic workplaces are deeply embedded in the Gen Z workforce, who have recently entered the corporate space. Widely described as the most vocal and self-aware generation yet, they differ from previous generations, who were more inclined to accept the work environment as it was and adapt to its demands. The debate resurfaced after a woman's recent video went viral on social media, in which she shared her experience of logging out 'on time.' In the now-viral video, the woman shared that her reporting manager told her that there was some more work while her working hours were ending, so she informed him of such. "So I am returning home from the office. And my reporting manager told me that there is some more work. I told him that no, sir, today I have to leave on time. It is not that I want to go early, I want to go only after completing my working hours on time," she said. According to the woman, the manager then told her his schedule and told her she could leave. "I am not able to understand that this psychology, this mentality, this conditioning, where is it coming from? A person goes to the office to earn two meals a day. If he cannot eat two meals a day comfortably at home, if he cannot take a leave and relax at home after travelling and returning home, then what is the point of earning that money and buying a sofa and a mattress with that money?" she added. "So, is glorifying this forced struggle important for one?, she continued, "Working overtime, doing extra work, working hard, working in such a way that your personal life becomes imbalanced, not this, glorifying this for one." A key point that remains prevalent in the hustle culture debate between Gen Z employees and traditional workplace norms is the practice of long working hours. While other generations often equated longer hours with dedication and success, Gen Z often argues that it as a symptom of poor time management and unhealthy priorities. This shift in mindset has led to open resistance against after-hours working. Netizens' Reaction 'In India, staying back after work hours is seen as HARDWORKING. And in the rest of the world it's seen as LACK OF TIME MANAGEMEN,' an Instagram user wrote in the comment section. 'I love how Gen Z is not up for it. They are outspoken, know their rights and are actually not afraid to apply. I wish I was like that in my early 20s,' another one commented. 'This is classic behaviour! The whole comparison game is pretty much in every office. To make you feel guilty and make you stay longer,' a user said. 'Sorry to break your bubble but due to so fierce competition, we are very much replaceable. Also it's not that you would be working exactly 8 hours, some days work might be less as well. Maybe, When you'll be at higher position you'll be able to understand his/her position where just clocking hours doesn't matter, you are responsible for delivering the product on time with high quality. Lastly some might not have family responsibilities to be taken care of and can think of quitting job when it gets tough. Everyone's life is not a piece of cake,' a user wrote, explaining the other side of the debate. The point that Gen Z raises repeatedly is the idea of work-life balance, as they see personal time, hobbies, and mental health care as essentials, not luxuries. Meanwhile, previous generations, who might have sacrificed personal life, saw such sacrifices as a tool for career advancement.

Millennials, Gen Z Account For Two-Thirds Of Blue-Collar Job Applicants: Report
Mumbai: In the blue collar category, Millennials and Gen Z continued to remain among the country's highest job-seeking population, accounting for 65 per cent of all job applications in 2024 as well as 2025, a report said on Saturday. Among these, the surge in jobseeking has been most among the 20-23 years cohort, which saw a 50.7 per cent year-on-year increase in applications, according to a report by blue and grey-collar job platform WorkIndia. This youngest working-age group, largely comprising recent graduates, contributed to an 85.5 per cent rise in applications, reflecting a strong intent to enter the workforce early, it stated. Even candidates with lower formal education levels (below 10th standard) showed a 37.4 per cent growth, indicating a widening base of job readiness and aspiration across educational backgrounds, the report added. Millennials are those born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s, and Gen Zs are those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s. The report is based on data analysis of 111.71 million job seekers on the WorkIndia platform from January 2024 to July 2025. The report further revealed that while both young men and women are actively applying for jobs early in their careers, gender dynamics reveal some divergence in the late 20s. Women's application rates in the 27-29 year age group have stagnated, while those of their male counterparts continued to rise, indicating the need for a closer look at career drop-offs or barriers for women in that age bracket. It also found the growing willingness to travel for jobs, reflecting increased flexibility among the youth. Applications for 'labourer' roles surged by 98 per cent, with a surge of 136 per cent among 20-23-year-olds. Other fast-growing job categories include typist and data entry roles (67 per cent) and law-related positions (61 per cent), followed by steady interest in sales, HR, and manufacturing roles, said the report. Meanwhile, the report found that job applications from tier-IV cities jumped 54.9 per cent, suggesting that local economies are beginning to thrive and that candidates are increasingly seeking viable careers closer to home. "From tier I cities to tier IV towns, we're witnessing a workforce that is bold, mobile, and hungry for growth. It's a clear signal that India's next big leap will come from the ground up, and platforms like ours have a responsibility to fuel that momentum," WorkIndia CEO and Co-founder Nilesh Dungarwal said.

A growing number of Gen Z workers are fed up with toxic workplaces where micromanagement and dismissed ideas are the norm, but instead of going straight to the HR with their complaints, they are turning to TikTok for advice on how to 'protect their peace'. The advice that they are getting isn't about setting boundaries or documenting issues — it's about 'most unhinged, borderline unethical' things they can do to keep their sanity, Fortune reported. Gen Z's most common and popular unhinged hack is malicious compliance. This is a passive-aggressive form of protest where employees follow instructions exactly as they are given, even when they know doing so will cause inefficiency or backfire. 'Once my job made us do 'productivity' timesheets and we all agreed to be maliciously compliant,' one user commented. 'People were writing, '8:01, hang up jacket, 8:05 took tampon out.' 'I do exactly what my boss tells me. Word for word,' another user wrote. 'If it wasn't spelled out, it isn't getting done. Malicious compliance.' Beyond malicious compliance, Gen Zers are using other creative methods to cope with toxic jobs, including: The 'Let them' theory: This idea, originated from author Mel Robbins, is about letting go of things you can't control. The 'Gray Rock method': This involves disengaging emotionally from a job or person as uninteresting as a 'gray rock.' Faking a lawyer: Some workers copy a fake lawyer into emails to get difficult clients to cooperate. 'I tell myself we're all characters in a sitcom like The Office,' a user said. 'I started lying about myself lol,' another user commented. 'I would give different people different versions of events about myself and when someone confronted me about the stories being different, I knew they were talking about me behind my back.' Whereas some young workers aren't passively aggressively expressing their discontent and unhappiness at the workplace, instead, they are taking a direct approach of 'revenge quitting.' This online trend reflects a larger trend among Gen Z. Nearly 60% of Gen Zers described their current role as a 'situationship,' a short-term job they never intended to stay in for the long term, according to a recent survey of young workers. Of those planning to leave their roles, nearly half said they expect to exit within the next year, and a quarter said they're ready to quit at any moment. Hence, for employers, the message is clear: failure to provide flexibility, growth, and respect for personal boundaries that the post-millennial generation strives for is leading to higher turnover rates, Fortune reported. While these tactics may provide a temporary sense of relief, a workplace psychologist warns they could harm future career prospects. The expert Ben Granger explains that employers may commit a psychological tendency called the fundamental attribution error, which is a tendency to assume that someone's actions reflect their personality, rather than the environment they are in. 'If they [employers] have that perception, it can really do a lot of damage,' Granger told Fortune. Granger suggests that a more productive approach would be to set realistic expectations during the hiring process and reframing challenges rather than retaliating.
