A superb six-wicket return from Mohammad Abbas and second half-centuries in the match for Ben Slater and Joe Clarke helped Division One leaders Nottinghamshire seize control of their County Championship game with Yorkshire on day two at Headingley.
Pakistan seamer Abbas was the chief protagonist with 6-45 from 17.3 overs - four of his wickets coming either side of lunch to secure a 49th career first-class haul of five wickets or more - as Yorkshire were bowled out for 159 in reply to a first-innings 228.
Former England batter Dawid Malan impressed with a counter-attacking 64 off 45 balls as second-bottom Yorkshire, who started the day on 10-2, lost regular wickets.

From early afternoon onwards, Nottinghamshire's pursuit of a fourth win gathered even more steam, with opener Slater top-scoring with 78 off 125 balls in 227 for three from 61 overs, a lead of 296. Clarke provided important support with a fluent unbeaten 72 not out off 92.
Left-handed Slater bettered his opening day 52 and shared half-century partnerships with Haseeb Hameed and Clarke, who top-scored with 64 in the first innings.
As 35-year-old Abbas claimed his second haul of five wickets or more in three matches for Notts this season, it meant Yorkshire have now only posted first-innings totals of 250 or more on three occasions in seven matches in 2025.
They have a mountain to climb to avoid a fourth defeat in seven games this season.

Nottinghamshire captain Hameed shared 73 inside 16 overs for the first wicket with Slater in their second innings to more than double a commanding lead of 69.
Hameed's 33 was confidently compiled on a largely gloomy Leeds day.
Just as Yorkshire will have been frustrated with their efforts with the bat, they would have been with the ball too. Conditions remained helpful for the seamers, but they failed to apply any pressure.
Hameed was caught behind off a beauty from Jordan Thompson which bounced and nipped away before Freddie McCann was unlucky to have been given caught behind off Ben Coad for 15 shortly before tea with the score on 113-2, a lead of 179.

But Slater, who was eye-catching on the drive, continued on.
He reached a well-paced fifty off 68 balls and shared 70 for the third wicket with Clarke before edging behind one which nipped away from Matthew Revis' seam to make it 173-3.
Clarke went on to reach his fifty off 55 balls and shared a day-ending unbroken 54 partnership for the fourth wicket with Jack Haynes, 13.
Earlier, Yorkshire reached lunch at 119-7, with seamers Dillon Pennington and Brett Hutton striking twice apiece and Abbas once as Notts strengthened their grip.
En-route, they had to survive a counter-attacking half-century from Malan, who played a series of eye-catching shots and made it look like he was batting on a featherbed pitch.

Malan drove imperiously and hoisted his quartet of sixes over the leg-side, reaching his fifty off only 34 balls upon his return to the side following three games out with a groin injury.
After the early departure of James Wharton - caught at first slip off Pennington to leave them 15-4 - Malan shared 37 for the fifth wicket with nightwatchman Jack White, who chanced his arm for 18 before he also edged Pennington into the slips.
Hutton had Harry Duke caught behind and Malan lbw playing to leg, and when Abbas claimed his first wicket of the day by rocking back George Hill's middle stump with one which kept low and jagged back, Yorkshire were 107-7 in the 34th over of the innings.
After lunch, Abbas claimed his fourth and fifth wickets in successive balls as Yorkshire slipped to 124-9. Captain Dom Bess edged to fourth slip and Thompson to first.

Revis, with 27, and Coad shared 35 for the last wicket, but it was only brief respite as the former dragged on to Abbas, leaving the visitors with all but two sessions of batting to do through to close.

His trademark pigeon celebration is the same. Richarlison quite possibly isn't. The number nine was one of the leading lights from the opening weekend of the Premier League, scoring twice as Tottenham Hotspur defeated promoted side Burnley on Saturday. The reinvigorated Brazilian, with the momentum and backing to finally become a prolific forward at Spurs, best embodies a team on the up. It's worth noting that a similar tape has played before. Richarlison has previously been an effective striker, while Tottenham, at the beginning of ex-coach Ange Postecoglou's tenure, picked up 26 points from a possible 30 to start the 2023/24 league campaign. In both cases, neither developed into a genuine force in the division. And it's only the first match this time around. Richarlison's character arc is significant, though. Fewer than 18 months ago, the number nine spoke bravely about his battles against depression following the World Cup in 2022 to ESPN. Being a professional athlete, with its expectations and incessant scrutiny from the stadium to the digital space, brings challenges regardless of the attractive pay packets. He now looks in a much better place, which is great to see. Many (guilty here) would have chosen his striking partner, Dominic Solanke, as the apex of their Fantasy Football teams. However, the ex-Everton frontman seems to have the advantage over Solanke, spearheading the lineup and swivelling his long limbs to net two excellent goals and start on the right footing. Richarlison has rough edges to his game. Still, you don't rack up half a century of caps for Brazil without having clear strengths. Someone key to the 28-year-old's fortunes is Spurs coach Thomas Frank. In Richarlison, he likely sees a physical competitor from whom he can extract the best for the function of the lineup. Away from the tactics whiteboard, the Dane—once a teacher—could be the mentor Richarlison requires. Ivan Toney, Yoanne Wissa, and Bryan Mbeumo were the beneficiaries at Brentford—Frank's former club. 'I always liked Richarlison,' said Frank when asked about how the South American fits his plans amid talk of him leaving this summer. 'I always thought he was good when he played for Everton. When he came to Tottenham, we all knew he had struggled with some injuries or been unlucky with them. So, we're very aware that we need to build him up and protect him. We can't say, after playing two games back-to-back, where he did well in both, that we are out of the woods. We need to prove it for a longer time. But the early signs are good.' Watch Out For Dark Horse Tottenham Tottenham is not even at the periphery of discussions around which names are best-placed to compete for the Premier League title this term, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea getting the most attention in that regard. Having won a rare trophy in May and being nearly guaranteed to upgrade on its 16th-place league finish, Spurs can approach the season without any major weight on their shoulders. The only pressure could be financial, namely qualifying again for the Champions League and the riches it brings. It's another transitional period for Tottenham. Postecoglou's era involved the departure of all-time leading scorer Harry Kane while switching to a brand of expansive high-stakes soccer. As for Frank's Spurs, they have lost another worldwide star in Son Heung-min and are adjusting to a more direct and adaptable style. On first viewing, a resurgent Richarlison will be a central piece for a club that was in a less-than-ideal situation for much of 2024/25.

Erling Haaland scored a brace in Manchester City's 4-nil win over Wolves at Molineux. Pep Guardiola's side began the new Premier League season in style with their emphatic victory. There was a host of good performances from City's players at Molineux. Haaland scored a brace, but his performance has been overlooked given the quality displays from Tijjani Reijnders, Oscar Bobb, and others. But watching Haaland's performance, it was clear to see that he is hungry to lead from the front this season. Erling Haaland's brace against Wolves and overall performance were a good sign for Manchester City. Haaland scored a brace, and his goals were the ideal snippet of what he adds when he's at his best. His first goal came in the 34th minute from a tap-in at the back post after some sublime play from Tijjani Reijnders, who played in Rico Lewis. After last season's difficulties, it did seem like that goal was a release for Haaland and his team. Erling Haaland's overall performance was full of intent. At times, Haaland suffered from a lack of service during the early stages of Saturday's match. But while he wasn't heavily involved in the play, Haaland did help Manchester City's press when Wolves had possession. He did help his team put pressure on Vitor Pereira's side. There was an intent to Haaland's actions and that was great to see. It spoke of Haaland's intention to lead from the front as one of the players in Manchester City's captaincy group for the 25/26 season. Erling Haaland looks hungry to have a big 25/26 season. But perhaps the most telling comments about Haaland's performance at Molineux came from Pep Guardiola after Saturday's match. The Manchester City manager said that Haaland is looking like the player he was during his record-breaking debut season at the club. In comments relayed by Manchester Evening News, Guardiola said: 'I see Erling's rhythm and speed, and how it helps us. It's quite similar to his first season here. We need him.' Erling Haaland looks hungry and determined to help lead his team this season. If his performance on Saturday is the marker for what lies ahead, he could be set for a massive season for Manchester City.
