Match scorecard
A superb six-wicket return from Mohammad Abbas and second half-centuries in the match for Ben Slater and Joe Clarke helped Division One leaders Nottinghamshire seize control of their County Championship game with Yorkshire on day two at Headingley.
Pakistan seamer Abbas was the chief protagonist with 6-45 from 17.3 overs - four of his wickets coming either side of lunch to secure a 49th career first-class haul of five wickets or more - as Yorkshire were bowled out for 159 in reply to a first-innings 228.
Former England batter Dawid Malan impressed with a counter-attacking 64 off 45 balls as second-bottom Yorkshire, who started the day on 10-2, lost regular wickets.

From early afternoon onwards, Nottinghamshire's pursuit of a fourth win gathered even more steam, with opener Slater top-scoring with 78 off 125 balls in 227 for three from 61 overs, a lead of 296. Clarke provided important support with a fluent unbeaten 72 not out off 92.
Left-handed Slater bettered his opening day 52 and shared half-century partnerships with Haseeb Hameed and Clarke, who top-scored with 64 in the first innings.
As 35-year-old Abbas claimed his second haul of five wickets or more in three matches for Notts this season, it meant Yorkshire have now only posted first-innings totals of 250 or more on three occasions in seven matches in 2025.
They have a mountain to climb to avoid a fourth defeat in seven games this season.

Nottinghamshire captain Hameed shared 73 inside 16 overs for the first wicket with Slater in their second innings to more than double a commanding lead of 69.
Hameed's 33 was confidently compiled on a largely gloomy Leeds day.
Just as Yorkshire will have been frustrated with their efforts with the bat, they would have been with the ball too. Conditions remained helpful for the seamers, but they failed to apply any pressure.
Hameed was caught behind off a beauty from Jordan Thompson which bounced and nipped away before Freddie McCann was unlucky to have been given caught behind off Ben Coad for 15 shortly before tea with the score on 113-2, a lead of 179.

But Slater, who was eye-catching on the drive, continued on.
He reached a well-paced fifty off 68 balls and shared 70 for the third wicket with Clarke before edging behind one which nipped away from Matthew Revis' seam to make it 173-3.
Clarke went on to reach his fifty off 55 balls and shared a day-ending unbroken 54 partnership for the fourth wicket with Jack Haynes, 13.
Earlier, Yorkshire reached lunch at 119-7, with seamers Dillon Pennington and Brett Hutton striking twice apiece and Abbas once as Notts strengthened their grip.
En-route, they had to survive a counter-attacking half-century from Malan, who played a series of eye-catching shots and made it look like he was batting on a featherbed pitch.

Malan drove imperiously and hoisted his quartet of sixes over the leg-side, reaching his fifty off only 34 balls upon his return to the side following three games out with a groin injury.
After the early departure of James Wharton - caught at first slip off Pennington to leave them 15-4 - Malan shared 37 for the fifth wicket with nightwatchman Jack White, who chanced his arm for 18 before he also edged Pennington into the slips.
Hutton had Harry Duke caught behind and Malan lbw playing to leg, and when Abbas claimed his first wicket of the day by rocking back George Hill's middle stump with one which kept low and jagged back, Yorkshire were 107-7 in the 34th over of the innings.
After lunch, Abbas claimed his fourth and fifth wickets in successive balls as Yorkshire slipped to 124-9. Captain Dom Bess edged to fourth slip and Thompson to first.

Revis, with 27, and Coad shared 35 for the last wicket, but it was only brief respite as the former dragged on to Abbas, leaving the visitors with all but two sessions of batting to do through to close.

Outdoor seawater swimming pool could get go-ahead
A campaign to create an outdoor tidal swimming pool in a coastal town could be given the go-ahead after being backed by councillors. The Scarborough Safe Sea Swimming Project was discussed by the Scarborough and Whitby Area Planning Committee of North Yorkshire Council at its meeting on Friday. The plan is to build a three-sided seawater pool at the Children's Corner, at the top of Scarborough South Bay, which would have sand running into it and a sheltered beach and bathing area for children. Councillor Rich Maw said that outdoor swimming in Scarborough was already "growing rapidly in popularity". He said: "This idea began in the simplest of ways – with a letter from two local sea swimmers who asked me, 'How do we build a swimming pool?' "That one question has grown into a meaningful conversation, and now, the foundations of a community-led and deliverable plan. "Scarborough's South and North Bays are already loved by sea swimmers year-round. Cold water swimming is growing rapidly in popularity and for good reason." He acknowledged that there were some risks to sea swimming, as "currents, and cold water shock make it inaccessible for many and potentially dangerous for some". The site at Children's Corner, which is located just south of the busy town centre beach and adjacent to the historic Scarborough Spa, was agreed as the preferred location by the Scarborough Sea Swimming Community Interest Company (CIC) andcouncil officers. A feasibility study was also presented to councillors, while campaigners who had initiated the project looked on from the public gallery above, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The study was commissioned by North Yorkshire Council and was completed by outdoor swimming specialists and architects Studio Octopi. Other committee members, including councillors Heather Phillips, Liz Colling and Roberta Swiers, also spoke in favour of the plan. According to All the Lidos, there are five other public outdoor swimming pools in Yorkshire, including Alpamare Waterpark in Scarborough's North Bay area. The feasibility study recommended the submission of a pre-planning application, "given the unique and rare nature of tidal pool projects". The Scarborough Sea Swimming CIC will now work through the next stages of development, but the committee said it was eager to assist the group if it could. Ornstein: Liverpool transfer strategy shifts focus as top asset edges closer to exit
Nunez Exit Looms as Slot Plans Liverpool Overhaul Liverpool's summer transfer window is gathering pace, with early business focused on arrivals—but behind the scenes, the groundwork is being laid for a number of departures. Chief among them is Darwin Nunez, whose time at Anfield appears to be nearing its conclusion. Slot backs new faces as rebuild begins Arne Slot has wasted little time in stamping his identity on the squad. The Dutchman has already overseen the arrivals of Jeremie Frimpong and young Hungarian goalkeeper Armin Pecsi. More deals are in motion, with Liverpool actively pursuing moves for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. Advertisement But while fresh energy is being injected into the team, there is growing acceptance at the club that the exit door will be equally active. Nunez is shaping up to be the most high-profile sale of the summer. Nunez poised to depart after mixed spell Having arrived at Liverpool with significant expectations, Darwin Nunez's time on Merseyside has been inconsistent, according to David Ornstein. Despite registering double-digit goal tallies in his first two campaigns, the Uruguayan's influence diminished in 2024–25. He scored just seven goals across all competitions and made only eight Premier League starts under Slot. Liverpool previously resisted overtures from Saudi clubs in January, but the stance has since shifted. With interest still present in the Middle East, and European sides now circling, Liverpool believe there will be a strong market for the forward. Advertisement Atletico Madrid are among the clubs most consistently linked with Nunez, though reports suggest that Arsenal are unlikely to revive previous speculative interest. Arsenal links unlikely to resurface Talk of Nunez moving to Arsenal first emerged in August last year, sparked by a rumour on X (formerly Twitter) that claimed Mikel Arteta was keen on bringing the striker to the Emirates. It followed earlier online suggestions that Curtis Jones could also be on Arsenal's radar. At the time, those links were dismissed, with Liverpool having no desire to sell Nunez during what was Slot's first window in charge. Now, 12 months on, that position has changed. Strong market anticipated for summer sales The expectation internally is that Nunez will be sold this summer, freeing up funds and space in the squad for further attacking reinforcements. Speaking recently, a trusted source confirmed the shift in stance: 'The future of Darwin Nunez has been well-documented. There's an opportunity for him to leave. I think the expectation is that he will be sold and, therefore, we could see somebody come in in that position. I think Liverpool are among those, understandably, that have liked Alexander Isak. There's admiration for somebody like Hugo Ekitike. And decisions will have to be made, and I'm sure that's something Liverpool are thinking about, and will have multiple options, no doubt, if and when that situation develops.' It is clear Liverpool are preparing for life after Nunez. Slot's early decisions in the market suggest a desire to reshape the frontline, and the sale of Nunez could be key to unlocking further business. With other squad changes also likely, this summer promises to be one of transition—and transformation.

Derbyshire re-sign Hudson-Prentice for T20 Blast
Derbyshire have re-signed all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex on an initial four-match T20 Blast loan deal. The 29-year-old, who was not involved in Sussex's first three games in this season's competition, has taken 33 wickets and scored 548 runs in 51 T20 appearances during his career. Advertisement He was a member of the Derbyshire squad which reached Finals Day in 2019 and spent three years at the County Ground before moving to the south coast. The Falcons needed extra options because Zak Chappell (hip) and Harry Moore (back) are sidelined by injury. The signing of Hudson-Prentice was completed in time for Sunday's North group away game against Bears.
