Anil Ambani faces look out circular
New Delhi: A look out circular (LOC) has been issued against Reliance Group chairman and managing director Anil Ambani , close on the heels of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning the businessman for questioning on August 5 in connection with an alleged Rs 17,000 crore loan fraud case. The ED sent a request to the authority concerned to issue an LOC against Ambani, soon after summoning him at its headquarters in the capital, said people familiar with the matter. 'The request for opening an LOC was sent minutes after summons was issued to Anil Ambani on Thursday. This was done to ensure that he does not leave the country,' a senior official told ET on condition of anonymity. It is issued by the Bureau of Immigration, which falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs. ET was the first to report on Friday that the ED had summoned Ambani for questioning in connection with its investigation into the alleged loan fraud case. In a related development, ED Friday carried out searches against Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd. Biswal Tradelink is an Odisha-based company that allegedly ran a 'fake' bank guarantee issuance racket for business groups, including providing an alleged Rs 68 crore assurance for a Reliance Group company, said people in the know. They said Reliance Nu Bess Ltd allegedly submitted a fake bank guarantee of Rs 68.2 crore to Solar Energy Corp of India (SECI). 'They apparently used related party Biswal Tradelink for this arrangement. The purpose was a tender for setting up a 1,000 MW/2,000 MWh standalone battery energy system in India issued by the SECI,' said one of the persons, who did not wish to be identified. According to people in the know, ED is likely to apprehend one of the directors of Biswal Tradelink soon, making its first arrest in the case. The ED has alleged that the founder directors of Biswal Tradelink were previously directors of the Reliance Group. It has further alleged that a forged bank guarantee along with a forged endorsement letter of State Bank of India (SBI) was submitted to SECI. 'The ED is in possession of the alleged forged email. Instead of 'sbi', the email address had 's-bi'. The SBI email ID given was sbi.17313@ the person said. According to the ED, a first information report (FIR) had been registered by the Delhi Police at the behest of Reliance Nu Bess against Biswal Tradelink. In its complaint, according to the ED, Reliance Nu Bess alleged that SECI floated a tender for which bank guarantee was required. If the bank guarantee were to be furnished by any foreign branch of a bank, it had to be confirmed by the Indian branch or SBI through a secure messaging platform, akin to SWIFT. As per the ED, Reliance Nu Bess further alleged in its complaint, 'M/s Biswal Tradelink contacted Reliance NUBESS limited and offered to provide bank guarantee for a fee. Subsequently, SECI found that the bank guarantee was fabricated as also the confirmation from SBI.' The ED has alleged that Reliance Nu Bess wrongly claimed that it was cheated. 'Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties (Reliance Nu Bess and Biswal Tradelink) acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance group,' a senior official told ET. A statement issued by Reliance Group on Friday said, 'The company and its subsidiaries acted bonafidely and have been a victim of fraud, forgery and cheating conspiracy. The company has made due disclosure on this to the stock exchanges on November 7, 2024.' It further said that 'a criminal complaint in this regard has already been lodged with the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police against the third party on October 16, 2024' and that the 'due process of law will follow'. The alleged money laundering case being investigated by the ED stems from a November 2024 FIR of the Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing.

Illegal liquor outlets thrive in protected forests in Faridabad
: Liquor vends and taverns are operating openly on Aravali forest land and protected greenbelts across Faridabad, some hidden behind thick vegetation, others right in the middle of residential zones, in clear violation of environmental laws. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At least four vends have come up on forest land, and over 35 more in green belts in areas like Bhatola, Mangar, Surajkund Road and Lakkarpur. Many of these locations fall within buffer zones of the Aravalis, where any construction or commercial activity is either restricted or banned under the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA), 1900. The vends are not small kiosks. In most places, there are permanent structures -- double-shutter shops with paved courtyards, tin-roofed seating areas and boundary walls. Ahatas attached to them offer open-air drinking spaces with plastic chairs, wooden benches and food counters. In some cases, drains around the premises were clogged with empty bottles, plastic cups, leftover food items and liquor sachets. One of the outlets in Bhatola lies on protected forest land, which is owned by the irrigation department. Another store in a forest area is located close to the Manav Rachna University, and a third in Lakkarpur is on Aravali land owned by the tourism department. A fourth outlet is carved out of a green belt in Mangar, with a parcel of Aravali land likely flattened to make space for the shop. The store's owners also installed floodlights here. On Friday, most staffers at these stores refused to talk or show any permits. But an employee of a wine shop along Surajkund Road told TOI the store has been at the spot for years. "No one came to say that it is illegal," he said. Another staffer at the wine shop in Mangar said he wasn't aware that this was forest land. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now An excise department official on Friday refused to comment on the legality of these shops. "The matter is sub-judice. A verification survey can be initiated soon," a district excise official said. A forest department official said on Friday that they had issued notices to these vends last week. "These are old structures, but we issued notices last week. One of them, which is near Surajkund Road, has around 20% of its structure in PLPA area. We will carry out a demarcation and issue a notice. The Mangar one is in section 4 of PLPA. We will carry out appropriate action against these units," said Vipin Kumar Singh, divisional forest officer, Faridabad. The matter of liquor vends operating illegally in protected forests had reached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Dec last year. Faridabad-based activist Narender Sirohi had filed a petition, alleging that the state govt has allowed rampant commercialisation of protected Aravali land. "These outlets are polluting forest land and green belts, creating constant nuisance and encouraging illegal commercial activities in areas where only afforestation or open land use is permitted. Despite multiple complaints, no action was taken. That's why I approached the tribunal," Sirohi told TOI. He said that these shops were not "accidental violations", these laid bare "regulatory apathy". "Entire green belts are loaded with heaps of garbage… Such activities are not only causing degradation of the environment, but are also affecting public health at large," he added. For now, NGT has sought responses from the forest department, Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), excise department, district administration and the Union environment ministry. A hearing is expected by Oct. Environmentalists said such commercial operations in forest areas were "environmental vandalism". "Govt talks of preserving green belts, but liquor outlets are being allowed to thrive in the very areas meant for reforestation and ecological buffers," said Sunil Harsana, an ecologist and activist.

After Prada controversy, LIDCOM and LIDKAR reaffirm ownership of Kolhapuri Chappal GI Tag
Days after the Prada controversy about Kolhapuri chappals, and after a business body from Maharashtra engaged in discussion with Prada, Maharashtra-based LIDCOM and Karnataka-based LIDKAR have reaffirmed their ownership of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kolhapuri chappals. 'No individual or organization other than us is authorized to engage in any discussion, negotiation, or representation with Prada or similar international entities,' a press release issued jointly on Friday (August 1, 2025) by LIDCOM Managing Director Prerna Deshbhratar and LIDKAR Managing Director K.M. Vasundhara stated. 'The traditional and historic Kolhapuri chappal, originating from Maharashtra and Karnataka, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The officially registered ownership of this GI tag rests solely with two corporations—Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation Limited (LIDCOM) and Dr. Babu Jagjivanram Leather Industries Development Corporation Limited (LIDKAR)—as clarified by the Managing Directors of both entities,' it stated. Kolhapuri chappals, which received royal patronage in the 20th century under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, were made in the erstwhile province under the king. Today, these parts of the earlier province are spread across eight districts. Four of them are in Maharashtra, and four in Karnataka. The tradition of the chappals dates back to the 12th century saint tradition. In June 2025, the renowned Italian fashion brand Prada presented its Spring/Summer 2026 men's collection. 'Observers noted that the leather sandals worn by a model in this show bore a striking resemblance to the GI-tagged traditional Kolhapuri chappals from Maharashtra. This resemblance sparked strong reactions on social media platforms and among traditional artisan communities. Following the incident, a group of lawyers filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court, alleging that Prada's use of a design protected under GI registration constituted a violation of intellectual property laws. On July 16, 2025, the court dismissed the PIL, stating that in such matters, only the registered GI holders—namely, the leather industry development corporations of Maharashtra and Karnataka—are the legitimate stakeholders and hence, solely entitled to initiate any civil legal proceedings,' the press release said. They said that their collective mission goes beyond protecting the geographical indication. 'It is also aimed at safeguarding the rights of thousands of local leather artisans and firmly establishing this heritage on national and international platforms.'
