Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha hopes the audience will be invested in the transformation of Mr Sood, and his chance to be a part of a society that doesn't allow "Scrooges, twisted and shaped by prejudice, to grow." Former EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, singer Pixie Lott, Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran, Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville and Sanditon 's Leo Suter also star in the movie. Chadha, 65, said in her director's statement: "Our Scrooge, called Sood, is a rich British Indian who despises poor people and refugees in particular." "Sood has decided that immense wealth brings him status and standing, so to hell with the poor, unemployed and disenfranchised who didn't work as hard as him to get where he is." The movie "is very true to the original text and sentiment", according to Chadha, and will teach audiences "the urgent lesson of how prejudice, poverty and division in all its forms shapes Sood and our society today". The British Indian director added: "A hundred and eighty-two years later, Dickens' novella still resonates globally in today's sometimes harsh world." She also said she was inspired by a family member, who lost his home in Uganda as a child, and came to Britain around Christmas time, arriving to a hostile welcome as a refugee. "For years he didn't feel Christmas was for him and the hardships he faced as a child left him despising it," she said. She added: "For me, Christmas Karma is a legacy film with a humane message that will live on long after I do." Dyer, 48, plays a London cabbie, while Bonneville, 61, plays the ghost of Jacob Marley. Influenced by gospel, bhangra, Christmas carols, rap and classic pop, the soundtrack features music from Take That's Gary Barlow, former All Saints member Shaznay Lewis, and England-based Punjabi bhangra singer Malkit Singh. Other adaptations of the classic novel, published in 1843, include a 2019 BBC mini series starring Adolescence actor Stephen Graham, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Doctor Who 's Christopher Eccleston played Scrooge in a retelling of the story at the Old Vic in London between November 2023 and January 2024. There are also a number of film adaptations including Scrooged (1988), starring Bill Murray as an angry TV network president and modern-day Scrooge, and The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992). The film is in cinemas from 14 November.

MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry have extended their Netflix deal - but bosses are hoping they will have some 'juicy royal tea to spill', according to experts. She claimed: 'It's a retainer in case they [Meghan and Harry] decide to accidentally do something entertaining again. 'That's basically it. So there's no commitment. 'They've put no money behind this. It's basically the right to first refusal. 'So if they come up with something that doesn't have to do with their whole kind of sermonising about how to save the world, then Netflix might be like, yes. 'I mean, to be brutally honest, what they've done is they've said, 'unless you have some juicy tea to spill on the royal family, or you get divorced and want to give us a documentary, probably not.' 'But if they have something juicy to say about the royal family, like the king sent me a potted plant, which turned out to be poison ivy, or that 'H my fox' just didn't hold me the way I wanted to, and so we've had to consciously uncouple, then maybe. 'That's basically it.' Esther claimed that the deal is the 'best of both worlds' and claims Netflix has been "clever in that sense.' She added: 'These people [the Sussexes] are a household name. They're annoying, but they're a household name. Harry & Meghan were 'not in a strong position' & signed Netflix deal for 'much less'… TV giant 'did it for publicity' 'If they do anything interesting, we have to be first in the queue, because it would be a blockbuster. 'Everyone would be covering it. It'd be a huge media storm. But at the moment, given their track record, absolutely not. 'We're not committing five quid to this.' Five years ago, Harry and Meghan secured a lucrative contract, thought to be worth more than 100 million dollars (£74million), with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. 'The landscape has changed completely for TV, but streaming services in particular. On top of Season 2 of With Love, Meghan - which will drop later this month - they will also do a "Holiday Celebration" Christmas special this December. "Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy." There will also be a short film called "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within". SUSSEX NETFLIX HISTORY It was previously thought that the Sussexes' £74million deal with the streamer was not going to be renewed. Harry's Polo series, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people. Sarah Shafi was the first contestant to pull out of the show after telling producers it shouldn't be aired. The episode which would have featured the unnamed contestant was broadcast on BBC One on Wednesday. But it only featured five chefs rather than the usual six, the BBC reported. Sarah, from Leeds, believed airing Masterchef would send the wrong message about what happens after women report misbehaviour by powerful men. The 57-year-old rejected an offer by MasterChef's producers Banijay to edit her out of her episode, wanting them to axe it entirely. She was "flabbergasted" by the suggestion, but agreed once it was announced the series would air. She told The Guardian: "I said: 'Axe the show, don't air the show. I'm asking you not to air the show.' "Prominent figures have been abusing their power. What message does that send out to women?" The former contestant said she didn't want to be part of a show with an "enabling environment". It was said to be "quite a heated conversation". A spokesperson for production company Banijay said: "One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included," the BBC reports. "We have of course accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show." The latest series of MasterChef was hit with controversy in the weeks leading up to its launch, with hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode being axed from presenting future series. However, the BBC ultimately decided to air series 21, which had already been filmed. The latest episode - the fourth in its run - saw five amateur cooks enter the kitchen, rather than the usual six. But the long shot of the group outside walking towards the kitchen was missing, and instead, the edit featured close ups of their faces or in pairs. Once inside, John and Gregg explained how two cooks would automatically go through to the next round after cooking their first dish. In a bizarre moment, contestant Hazel gave a thankful nod before looking to the side, but as far as viewers could see, there was no one on Hazel's left that she would need to acknowledge. A spokesperson for Banijay previously said: "As we said when we announced the show would be aired, this was not an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone would agree with it. "Banijay consulted with all the contestants before that decision was made and there was widespread support for it going ahead. "The focus of the series is the contestants, as it always is.
