Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to Morrison
The film was premiered in 1959 at the Cork Film Festival and it was the first full length feature film ever produced in the Irish language.
It dealt with key figures and events in Irish nationalism between Ireland's most turbulent periods, culminating in the 1916 Rising and Sinn Féin's electoral victory in 1918.
The title itself was taken from a 1912 poem by Republican revolutionary Patrick Pearse.
Morrison was born in Tramore, Waterford, in 1922 and his mum was an actress at the Gate Theatre in Dublin while his father worked as an anaesthetist.
He followed in his parents footsteps and enrolled in Trinity College to study medicine before leaving university to pursue his career in the creative arts.
The Wexford native started working on documentaries with the Gate Theatre film ventures as an assistant director and editor.
Morrison was a member of Aosdana and was awarded the Industry Lifetime Contribution Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2009.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Janet Morrison, who died in 2019, and his first wife Theodora Fitzgibbon, who passed in 1991.
Morrison was elected a Saoi of Aosdana in 2017 and was bestowed with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold torc, by President Michael D Higgins.
Higgins paid tribute to Morrison today after hearing about his death and called him an "iconic and foundational figure in Irish filmography".

He said: "A filmmaker of immense craft and skill, he will rightly be remembered in particular as a great innovator in the techniques of film, using new and pioneering camera work while realising how film and music could be brought together in a way that is distinctive.
"I had the honour of bestowing the honour of Saoi of Aosdána on George Morrisson in 2017 and have also had the pleasure of meeting with him on many other occasions over the years, including when we marked his 100th birthday in Aras an Uachtarain in 2023.
STAR TRIBUTES
"On behalf of Sabina and myself, may I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who have been so inspired by his work over the decades."
Last year, Sinn Fein TD in Waterford Conor D McGuinness organised an event to honour Morrison.
McGuinness also paid tribute to Morrison saying: "It's for Mise Eire and Saoirse he will mostly be remembered, but he produced many great works during his lifetime.
"I was happy to nominate him last year for a civil honour from Waterford County and City Council.
"Go dtuga Dia solas da mhuintir agus go raibh leaba i measc na naomh aige."
After Mise Eire, Morrison made a follow-up documentary called Saoirse which analysed the still-divisive Civil War.
He released a documentary on James Joyce's Ulysses in 2007, which was titled Dublin Day.
And Morrison was the subject of a documentary called Waiting for the Light in 2008.

The pair both live in London. While speaking on the podcast, Jesse brought up the decade age difference between himself and his husband Justin Mikita, which prompted Sharon to spill the beans. Kneecap apologise to fans as Vienna concert cancelled due to 'safety concerns'

The rap trio have said there is a smear campaign against them because of their support for Palestine. Belfast rap trio Kneecap have apologised to fans after their show in Vienna was cancelled "due to acute safety concerns". It comes after the group were banned from entering Hungary in July ahead of their scheduled performance at Sziget Festival on August 11. The group, known for their provocative lyrics and championing of the Irish language, have had several shows cancelled in recent months, including TRNSMT festival in Glasgow and at the Eden Project in Cornwall. They have said there is a smear campaign against them because of their support for Palestine and criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza. Kneecap News in 90 Seconds - Aug 8th In a social media post on Friday the group said: "Our planned show in Vienna on September 1st is cancelled." The social media post added: "To the 3500 people we were looking forward to seeing at our first headline show in Vienna, we are sorry: this is out of our hands. "All tickets will be refunded. "Yet again, it is clear that this is political distraction and a further attempt to silence those who call out genocide against the Palestinian people. "But as always, we will fight on for what is right." Kneecap at Glastonbury. Photo: PA A note on the venues website said: "Racoon Live Entertainment GmbH hereby cancels the planned Kneecap show on September 1, 2025, at the Gasometer Vienna due to acute safety concerns raised by the responsible authorities." Kneecap, comprised of Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, were formed in Belfast and released their first single in 2017. They hit headlines in April when footage emerged that appeared to show a band member saying "Kill your local MP" at one gig and and "Up Hamas, up Hezbollah" at another. In May, Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terrorism offence relating to allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah at a London gig in November 2024. Ó hAnnaidh and his bandmates were cheered by hundreds of supporters when they arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. Musicians including Nadine Shah and Gurriers have said they will attend court to support the group when Ó hAnnaidh returns on August 20. Kneecap have apologised to the families of murdered MPs and said they have "never supported" Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. They were also investigated over their set at Glastonbury Festival in June, but Avon and Somerset Police said they would be taking no further action in July.

What to watch on TV and streaming today: Karen Pirie, Licorice Pizza and Platonic

Karen Pirie Virgin Media One, 9pm The detective created by award-winning, bestselling author Val McDermid is back on our screens. And it's about time too – it's now three years since the first series aired. Thankfully, the cast remains intact, with Lauren Lyle once again playing Pirie. She's joined by Chris Jenks as Karen's sidekick, the well-meaning but gullible DC Jason 'Mint' Murray, and Zach Wyatt, who takes the role of her colleague and secret boyfriend, DS Phil Parhatka. Something else that hasn't changed is the fact that the creative driving force behind the new run is former EastEnders star Emer Kenny (she played Zsa Zsa Carter for nine months in 2010), who has once again written the scripts while also appearing as Karen's best friend and forensics expert Dr River Wilde. 'I'm delighted to be bringing Karen back to your screens, now a detective inspector with more power, more confidence, and some of the same iconic sweater vests,' smiles Kenny. 'We have a dazzling cast, an heroic crew and epic plot twists. If Karen Pirie isn't already your favourite detective, I promise she will be soon.' The character's latest case, which will play out across three feature-length episodes, is based on McDermid's 2008 novel A Darker Domain, in which Karen and her team reopen a cold case from 1984 after a discovery is made which the police believe is linked to the disappearance of a wealthy oil magnate's daughter and her baby son. Tradfest: The Fingal Sessions RTÉ One, 8pm Blues legend Eric Bibb, musician Muireann Bradley and fiddler Eileen Ivers investigate traditional Irish music's links to tunes from around the world. Mrs Brown's Boys RTÉ One, 9.35pm Chaos reigns supreme once again as Agnes tries to find out why Granddad wants to leave and Foley's Bar gets set for its annual talent show. The Best of The Late Late Show RTÉ One, 10.10pm Among the highlights to look out for are a candid chat with Danny Dyer about his post-EastEnders life and Sharon Horgan discussing her show Bad Sisters. ADVERTISEMENT Licorice Pizza RTÉ2, 9.25pm Director Paul Thomas Anderson's delightful comedy takes place in 1973 when a bored 25-year-old photographer's assistant forms an unlikely bond with an entrepreneurial teenage former child star. Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman play the duo, while Sean Penn co-stars. Peggy Sue Got Married RTÉ One, 11.15pm Time-travelling fantasy-comedy starring Kathleen Turner as an unhappily married woman who gets a chance to relive her high school years — but will fate bring her back together with her future husband? Wednesday Netflix, streaming now Of course, it's releasing on a Wednesday. Would a Wednesday in late September/early October better suit the eerie vibe? Absolutely. But humanity is always chasing the next season – observe Starbucks dropping its Pumpkin Spice this month (August 26, to be exact). Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) returns to roam the halls of Nevermore Academy, where new horrors and teen woes await. With her deadpan delivery, she dives into another school year of ghoulish japes, juggling family, foes and supernatural mayhem. Tim Burton steers the twisted ship into season two, where a new mystery unfolds, pushing Wednesday into even darker territory (put it this way, it's not for the early tweens). Familiar faces Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán reprise their roles, while new blood includes Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton and Noah Taylor, with bonus guest appearances from Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Lumley and Thandiwe Newton. Platonic AppleTV+, streaming now More of besties Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne being various forms of 'platonic'. King of The Hill Disney+, streaming now Between this and the return of South Park, it's 1997 all over again (if only). Hank and Peggy return to Arlen after building their retirement fund in Saudi Arabia (peddling propane, obvs), while Bobby now lives it up in Dallas as a chef. For more grown-up animation, there's also Eyes of Wakanda. Hunting The Yorkshire Ripper Prime Video, streaming now Not to be confused with Jack the Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe shared a taste for misdirection and was ultimately facilitated by a Wearside Jack, whose notes and tapes led the police astray back in the 1970s. Fifty years later, retired detective Chris Gregg assembles a cold case team to hunt the impersonator who kept Sutcliffe's crimes alive. Trainwreck: Storm Area 51 Netflix, streaming now Frankly, I don't mind that they're starting to get repetitive; it's still appointment viewing every week in Chez McGinley. In 2019, a joke Facebook event to 'storm Area 51' went viral, drawing millions and triggering warnings from US authorities. Indeed, it does sound exceedingly similar to last month's Real Project X instalment, but I'm still here for it. Conversations with a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes Netflix, streaming now 'Tis the turn of David Berkowitz's police tapes to get an airing. This chilling docuseries unpacks the Son of Sam killings, exposing Berkowitz's disturbing mindset he unleashed on 1970s NYC. Brady and the Blues Prime Video, streaming now Prime appears to be chasing some of that Welcome to Wrexham magic with a new sports docuseries featuring NFL icon Tom Brady. Mind you, this could be entirely different given Brady, at 3.3pc, is very much a minority stakeholder in Birmingham City FC. Perfect Match Netflix, streaming now Netflix's biggest reality stars – from Love Is Blind to Too Hot To Handle – head to paradise to search for love (or more followers) in a strategic dating showdown. So, like Battle Camp but with more bikinis. For more 'unscripted' drama, WWE: Unreal takes fans inside the writer's room for a look at the chaos behind the curtain. Leanne Netflix, streaming now Leanne Morgan's world flips when her husband leaves after 33 years. Menopausal and newly single, she leans on her family – especially her fierce sister Carol (Kristen Johnston) – to tackle this next chapter with Southern grit and lashings of 'jello salad'. Chuck Lorre is involved, so it can't be too bad.
