$50K bonus claim shows AIFF has no system, no clue: Bhutia
New Delhi: After India's 0-1 loss to Hong Kong in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia strongly criticised the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for reportedly offering players a USD 50,000 bonus had they won the game.
Following a goalless draw against Bangladesh in their opening match, India desperately needed a win to stay in contention. However, their hopes were dashed by a stoppage-time penalty, leading to another disappointing result. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Bhutia called for AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey to step down 'to save Indian football' and questioned the logic behind such ad-hoc financial incentives.
'We've seen reports that players haven't even received their daily allowance of Rs 2,500. Indian footballers don't have central contracts like cricketers. They don't earn in lakhs or crores. Their compensation largely comes through daily allowances,' Bhutia said. 'Then suddenly, out of nowhere, there's a USD 50,000 prize announcement if they had won the game. Where did this come from? If they had won, would the same bonus be offered for the next four games? There's clearly no system, no strategy. Just random decisions with no clarity,' he said.
In July 2023, India were ranked 99th in the FIFA rankings and had a promising year—winning the Intercontinental Cup, Tri-Nation Tournament, and SAFF Championship. However, Bhutia remarked that it's been 'one disaster after another' ever since.
Following former coach Igor Stimac's turbulent exit and India's elimination from the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the team went winless throughout 2024. Their only victory came recently when veteran striker Sunil Chhetri came out of retirement to lead the side to a 3-0 win over the Maldives—India's first win in 489 days.
As nations like Uzbekistan secure their maiden World Cup qualification, India now faces the grim prospect of missing out on the 2027 Asian Cup—a tournament they've consistently qualified for in recent years.
Reflecting on the broader situation, Bhutia didn't mince words, 'It's been a terrible two and a half to three years under Kalyan Chaubey's leadership. On-field performances have been poor, and off-field management has been chaotic, riddled with controversies. It's time for him to step down—for the sake of Indian football.'

India look to bounce back against formidable Australia in FIH Pro League
Antwerp, Low on confidence after four successive defeats, a struggling India will be desperate to arrest the slide and stay in contention for the top prize when they take on a formidable Australia in the men's FIH Pro League on Saturday. The European leg of the tournament has been disappointing for the Indian men's hockey team, which suffered 1-2 and 2-3 losses to Olympic champions Netherlands in Amstelveen, followed by back-to-back defeats against Argentina. Ranked fifth with 15 points from 12 games, India need to bounce back strongly against Australia to collect crucial points and remain in the race for a top-three finish. "A win against Australia will be very critical for us, as it will not only help us gain crucial points but also give the team a winning momentum," said captain Harmanpreet Singh, who had missed the last match due to a finger injury, in a release. "We've had a few close games in the last four matches, and while we have been on the losing end, we want to change that and get some wins under our belts." While poor penalty-corner conversions and the recurring issue of conceding late goals cost them dearly against the Netherlands, it was sloppy defending that led to a 3-4 defeat to Argentina in the first game. In the second, a potential equaliser from a late penalty was disallowed as India went down 1-2. India also struggled to earn penalty corners, managing only three compared to Argentina's eight. Up against a strong Australian side, India can ill afford any more slip-ups and will have to play out of their skins to turn their fortunes around. Currently ranked world number 7, India will look to draw confidence from their win over former world number one Australia during the Paris Olympics Pool stage. India will conclude their European leg with two matches against Belgium on June 21 and 22.

The first India vs England Test will begin at Headingley in Leeds on June 20 but days before the game, head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back to India. According to media reports, Gambhir's mother Seema Gambhir has suffered a heart attack. The former India opener's mother is currently in ICU in a hospital in New Delhi. Gautam Gambhir has flown back to New Delhi to check on his mother but is expected to rejoin with the team ahead of the first Test. India are beginning their new World Test Championships (WTC) cycle with the series against England. They have won only 1 out of the their last 8 Tests and lost 6 matches in this period – including three on the trot at home. Team India will be missing the services of three stalwarts with Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli all retiring from Test cricket. Gambhir had taken over as the head coach of the Indian side after Rahul Dravid stepped down from the position after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title.
