Excellent start for baseball's NL West foreshadows a potentially historic 4-team summer race
PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers seem like they have nearly unlimited amounts of money, three former MVPs in their starting lineup with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, and a pitching staff that never runs out of overpowering arms.
So far, that's good for third place in their five-team division.
Welcome to the National League West, which is far from a one-team show four weeks into the season. Going into Friday night's games, the San Diego Padres (17-8), San Francisco Giants (17-9), Dodgers (16-9) and Arizona Diamondbacks (14-11) are all off to a good start, foreshadowing a potentially fascinating summer race.
'For us, who are so close to it, not surprised,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'They're all very good teams. I think it's the best division in baseball. We're all sort of built differently, too, which is interesting and fun if you look at the construction, the strengths, weaknesses of the four clubs.
'It's going to be an interesting season how this all plays out.'
To be clear, the big-spending Dodgers have not underperformed this season. Los Angeles has a .640 winning percentage through 25 games, which translates to a 104-win pace. That's right where everyone pretty much expected them to be.
Instead, it's the great play from the Padres and Giants — and to a lesser extent the D-backs — that has set up a summer of fun. Since baseball split the NL and AL into three divisions in 1994, the 2002 AL West has the record for the highest winning percentage with a .566 mark.
So far, the 2025 version of the NL West is off to a .544 start — and that's including the Colorado Rockies, who are a dreadful 4-20 for the worst record in baseball. Take out the Rockies, and the other four teams have combined for a .634 winning percentage.
'It's gonna be a battle the entire season,' Giants third baseman Matt Chapman said. 'We knew the Dodgers are the Dodgers, the Padres are really, really good and so are the Diamondbacks.'

The Padres are playing well largely thanks to Fernando Tatis Jr., who is off to a torrid start with a .333 batting average, eight homers and 17 RBIs. Veteran starting pitchers Nick Pivetta and Michael King have led the rotation while closer Robert Suarez hasn't given up a run this season and leads the NL with 10 saves.
'Obviously, we're aware to some degree of what is taking place in the division and in the league, but our energy — my energy — is not about what anyone else is doing. It is on what we do,' Padres manager Mike Shildt said. 'We're spending our time and efforts on taking care of ourselves, because if we don't do that, nothing else is going to matter.'
The Giants are arguably the division's biggest surprise, led by a productive lineup that includes Jung Hoo Lee, Mike Yastrzemski, Wilmer Flores and Chapman. Right-hander Logan Webb has been dominant, with a 1.98 ERA and 44 strikeouts over six starts.
The D-backs have been a little more inconsistent than their division rivals, but are still lurking. Outfielder Corbin Carroll is off to an MVP-caliber start with a .321 batting average, nine homers, 23 RBIs and five stolen bases.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo echoed others when he said he's aware of the division's excellence, but tries not to dwell on it. The 162-game regular season is hard enough to navigate without worrying about other teams.
Being in the NL West might prove particularly stressful — and fun — this summer.
'At the end of the day, it makes everyone crazy,' Lovullo said, grinning. 'It makes you guys crazy, you guys make me crazy, I make you crazy. Everyone's crazy.'

Newport Beach's Boras, Gilchrist among honorees at inaugural OC Sports Awards
ANAHEIM — As high profile as he is, Newport Beach-based sports agent Scott Boras is often behind the scenes when he negotiates deals for his baseball player clients. Boras, sitting in the front row at Dodger Stadium, ended up on television during Sunday night's Dodgers game against the visiting New York Yankees after snagging a ninth-inning foul ball. 'I told ESPN, has your programming gotten to the level where you're going to interview some guy catching a foul ball?' Boras joked in an interview Tuesday night. 'You know, baseball has given me everything I have. It's frankly a very small community, when you think about it.' Two nights later, Boras was again in the spotlight about 30 miles south on the 5 Freeway. He was at Angel Stadium for the inaugural OC Sports Awards, where he received the Lifetime Achievement award. Boras, 72, has negotiated nearly $4 billion in contracts for his clients over the years and doesn't appear to be slowing down. Just last year, client Juan Soto signed a $765-million contract with the New York Mets, the largest in sports history. Longtime Boras client and Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux was on hand Tuesday to present Boras with his award at the event hosted by the Orange County Sports Commission. Boras seemed to appreciate Maddux being there, noting his extensive durability — 355 wins during a 23-year Major League Baseball career, including 17 straight seasons with at least 15 wins. He's also proud of his namesake Boras Baseball Classic, which has had more than 500 participants hear their names called in the Major League Baseball draft, including four No. 1 overall picks. '[Maddux] taught me how to manage greatness,' Boras said during his acceptance speech. 'Managing greatness is so difficult, because the athlete is invincible, and yet you have to give them advice and counsel to protect them. You have to have the courage to approach greatness and let them understand the word, 'No.'' Newport Beach's Kaleigh Gilchrist was another local honoree at the OC Sports Awards. The former Newport Harbor and USC women's water polo star, a three-time Olympian and two-time gold medalist, received the Evolution Award. Gilchrist, also a standout surfer, retired from water polo and married Tom Gehret last August, following the completion of the Paris Olympics, where Team USA placed fourth. Gehret also attended Tuesday's event. Gilchrist, 33, said she is trying to figure out what's next. She does have an opportunity to be the director of surf operations at the Snug Harbor Surf Park, which has been proposed at the Newport Beach Golf Course. 'We still have to get [the facility] passed by council, but hopefully, if all things go as planned, we'll be open by spring of 2028,' she said. 'It's obviously a dream job. Wave pools are popping up everywhere, and I think they're going to be the next best thing of surfing. To be involved from day one to when it's open would be really special.' Former Mater Dei High, USC and NFL quarterback Matt Leinart served as the night's host, with the ceremony starting on time despite lightning and thunder in the area that disrupted a planned red carpet. The OC Sports Awards were co-founded by Orange County Sports Commission executive director Anthony Brenneman and Revolver Sports Public Relations founder and chief executive Amanda Samaan. Brenneman said the sports commission separated from a larger tourism bureau into its own nonprofit last year. Other honorees included the Dodgers' Freddie Freeman, a Villa Park native, as the Male Pro Athlete of the Year. Professional surfer Caroline Marks, a San Clemente resident, was named Female Pro Athlete of the Year. Legendary surfer Kelly Slater was the ICON Honoree, late Angels founding owner Gene Autry was the Legacy Honoree and the Jessie Rees Foundation was honored as Philanthropist of the Year. High school and college athletes also earned awards for their excellence. 'We wanted to give an opportunity to honor everyone at every level,' Samaan said. 'We also wanted to honor those have come before us to even be here, like Gene Autry. To be able to do it in his house that he built was a full circle moment that we were really honored to be able to do our first year.' Freeman was not in attendance, as the Dodgers hosted the Mets on Tuesday night. He had a short video message for attendees and a memorable game on the field, hitting a walk-off double in the Dodgers' 6-5 win.

There's a moment in the Netflix documentary "Untold: The Fall of Favre" when the film is reliving Brett Favre's late career stops, and a graphic shows when he signed with the Minnesota Vikings: Aug. 18, 2009. Aug. 18? That can't be possible. That was a few days before the Vikings' second preseason game. We've heard over and over that quarterbacks need all offseason to build bonds with their new teammates and learn the offense. But Favre must have had a terrible 2009 season, starting that late. Right? Advertisement Not exactly. He had maybe his best NFL season at age 40. Aaron Rodgers, who turns 42 this year, and the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't wait that long, with news breaking Thursday that Rodgers is on the verge of signing with the Steelers. But it's still a question how effective he can be for them this season. But Rodgers has been following Favre in many ways for many years. And waiting turned out just fine for Favre in Minnesota. Can Aaron Rodgers be ready signing this late? Favre's 2009 offseason was wild. He said he was retiring after a season with the New York Jets and insisted he was never playing again. By the summer, that seemed to be a part of a plan to land with the Vikings. The Jets released him and he ended up with the Vikings. Advertisement But not until mid-August. In late July, after training camp had already started, Favre insisted he was still retired. Then it changed. And you think that Rodgers not being signed in late May this year is a cause for alarm? In Minnesota, Favre played in a West Coast offensive scheme he was familiar with, and that likely helped. But there weren't many questions at the time about Favre assimilating himself with the Vikings. And it didn't end up being an issue. In 2009, Favre had one of the best seasons of his career. He posted a 107.2 passer rating, almost eight points higher than the second-best mark of his Hall of Fame career. He finished fourth in the MVP voting and had a good argument to win it. Had the Vikings not melted down late in the NFC championship game, Favre would have taken Minnesota to its only Super Bowl since the 1977 season. He didn't exactly need all those May minicamp reps. But so is Rodgers. Advertisement Rodgers and Favre are linked forever, and their careers have mirrored each other in many ways, from the multiple MVPs and single Super Bowl title, to the short late-career time with the Jets to a third team right before retirement. Coaches are obsessive about practice reps, and mostly for good reason, but it can be overstated. Favre was fine in 2009. Offenses executed very well in 2020 after an unprecedented and mostly lost offseason due to COVID-19. Just two seasons ago Joe Flacco was signed by the Cleveland Browns in November and helped them to the playoffs. Smart veteran quarterbacks, especially ones with the pedigree of a Favre or Rodgers, usually figure things out. Rodgers will now be with the team through the rest of the spring and the start of training camp. The Steelers no longer have to be the subject of anxious reports about him being ready for the season. Rodgers is about to be a Steeler, and it still might end up just fine. It did for Rodgers' former Packers teammate.
