22 Filipinos in Israel amid airstrikes, says Israeli envoy

GMA Network17-06-2025
A total of 22 Filipinos on official travel to Israel have been trapped in the country following retaliatory airstrikes from Iran.
In an interview on Tuesday, Israeli ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss said that at least 17 local government officials of the Philippines were in the country on an official visit along with a separate team on a study on dairy farming when the strikes occurred.
'About 17 mayors and local government representatives, then a few from the dairy industry. So altogether, we have 22 in Israel. I have to say that from what I see, they are feeling okay,' he shared.
Fluss, meanwhile, assured that the Filipinos are being provided with support and care by the Israeli government, who are now working on their repatriation. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

Imee to skip SONA 2025, says other Duterte allies may also not attend

Senator Imee Marcos said Monday that she will not be attending the fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of her brother, President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. At a press conference right after the opening of the first regular session of the 20th Congress, Imee said that she will prioritize helping people who were affected by the recent storms. 'Hindi na ako pupunta dahil naka-schedule pa rin ang walang kamatayang nutribun, nutribus, at iba pang pagtulong sa ating mga nasalanta ng bagyo," said the senator. (I will not go because the distribution of nutribuns and deployment of nutribuns are ongoing, there's a scheduled distribution of aid to our typhoon victims.) "Pupunta ako sa ilang mga school building at schoolhousekung saan ang mga bata ay nagiintay ng pagkain, ng school supplies na nasira,' she added. (I will go to some school buildings and schoolhouses where children are waiting for food and replacement of school supplies that have been damaged.) Senator Marcos, meanwhile, clarified that Vice President Sara Duterte, who is also skipping this year's SONA, had nothing to do with her decision. 'Ay hindi pa kami naguusap tungkol do'n. I think hindi pa siya umuuwi,' she said. (We haven't talked about that. I think she hasn't arrived in the Philippines yet.) However, she said that the so-called "Duterte bloc" have discussed the possibility that they will not attend this year's presidential address. According to her, Senators Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, Bong Go, and Robin Padilla might also not attend the SONA. But Imee said that she will still listen to the SONA of her brother, hoping that he will veer away from motherhood statements and instead mention a list of what should be done in the next years to come. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

LIVE BLOG: SONA 2025

The giant national flag at the House of Representatives is hung up in the session hall again at the Batasan Complex on Thursday, July 17, 2025 after being washed and ironed ahead of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28. TINA PANGANIBAN-PEREZ/GMA Integrated News President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will give his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday afternoon, July 28, 2025. Marcos will deliver his SONA at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City with members of the 20th Congress in attendance, as well as government officials, the diplomatic corps, and others. The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Sunday said they have already made the necessary preparations for Monday's SONA. PNP chief General Nicolas Torre III said they are "hoping for the best and preparing for the worst." The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said 22,987 police personnel have been deployed to conduct security for the annual event. Of the total complement, 16,060 are cops assigned to the NCRPO. Support units from Region 4A of Police Regional Office 3 number 3,707 police officers while other agencies have contributed 3,220 personnel. Yemen's Houthis threaten to target ships linked to firms dealing with Israeli ports

A view shows the sinking of what is said to be the Liberia-flagged, Greek-operated bulk carrier, MV Magic Seas that was, according to Yemen's Houthis, attacked following an alleged exchange with the captain, off southwest Yemen, in this screen grab taken from a handout video released on July 8, 2025. HOUTHI MEDIA CENTER/Handout via REUTERS/File Yemen's Houthis said on Sunday they would target any ships belonging to companies that do business with Israeli ports, regardless of their nationalities, as part of what they called the fourth phase of their military operations against Israel. In a televised statement, the Houthis' military spokesperson warned that ships would be attacked if companies ignored their warnings, regardless of their destination. "The Yemeni Armed Forces call on all countries, if they want to avoid this escalation, to pressure the enemy to halt its aggression and lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip," he added. Since Israel's war in Gaza began in October 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have been attacking ships they deem as bound or linked to Israel in what they say are acts of solidarity with Palestinians. In May, the US announced a surprise deal with the Houthis where it agreed to stop a bombing campaign against them in return for an end to shipping attacks, though the Houthis said the deal did not include sparing Israel. —Reuters
