'He's ridiculously humble' - Warne lauds retiring Lewington

BBC News25-04-2025

New MK Dons boss Paul Warne has paid tribute to Dean Lewington ahead of what may be the veteran defender's final game for the club.Lewington, 41, began his career with Wimbledon FC and stayed with them when they made the move to Milton Keynes in 2004.He has confirmed that he will retire from playing at the end of the season and Saturday's home game against Grimsby Town has been named Dean Lewington Day as a show of respect."He's like the MK Dons Ryan Giggs. I played about 500 games which I'm quite boasty about because I think that's impressive.... but to play nearly double that, to have the physical resilience for that is amazing, the way the modern game is," Warne told the club website, external."I've seen him in team meetings and I've seen him out on the training pitch talking to the younger lads and telling them where they should be - his appetite for the game is impressive and that's possibly why he's played so many games."He is so humble, ridiculously humble, which is a really impressive trait. If he were my son, I'd be very proud of him as a player and a human being. He's the perfect person you want in the dressing room."Lewington was involved in many of the club's biggest moments, winning the EFL Trophy at Wembley in 2008, beating Manchester United 4-0 in the League Cup in 2014 and winning promotion to the Championship in 2015."It's unique that every team photo (at the stadium) has got him on. And he's the easiest one to find. When I walk down the steps, there he is, it's not like 'Where's Wally?' where it's really tricky. 'Where's Dean?' is really an easy game to play," joked Warne, who was appointed on 15 April. "He will definitely, when he passes away, be in a vinegar jar somewhere as a freak of nature."
Lewington last played in a 3-2 win over Cheltenham in November, but if he is involved against Grimsby, it will be his 916th game for the Dons, having broken John Trollope's 40-year record for the most league appearances for a single club in the EFL in 2023. "It feels a bit surreal; it doesn't really feel like it's the end," he told BBC Three Counties Radio."I'm not ready. I don't think you ever will be if you love something that has brought you so much joy and happiness and you still enjoy doing it; you never want to stop."But obviously everything has a time and a place and I know it is time to stop, but my heart is not quite ready yet."He has been named interim boss on three occasions when previous managers left Stadium: MK but was not asked to do the job again when Warne's predecessor Scott Lindsey was sacked in January.Only Peter Shilton, Tony Ford, Graham Alexander and Terry Paine have played more senior games in English football. But Lewington said: "Records ultimately are meaningless, it's just a list that you're top of."The end of my career is going to feel different because it means so much to me, it's my life and it's going to affect me a little bit differently, but hopefully I'll be alright."He has only played nine games this season and said he felt as "distant" from the rest of the team as he has ever done despite being involved in training."I've not been involved in the squad, not been to half the games, so it's been a really weird season for me," he continued."Even back at the start of the season, I probably knew this would be the last one but I was hoping the team would do well and it might end with a promotion, or at Wembley, something quite nice."It's been a disappointing season for everyone concerned and hopefully they have made the change now (by bringing in Paul Warne) that will be in place for two or three years and they can have a bit of stability."We may have hit rock bottom and hopefully now, this is the start of a comeback." Mk Dons are 18th in League Two, having lost in the play-offs last season, and following the game against Grimsby, they will end the campaign with a trip to Swindon Town on 3 May.

Tottenham star reacts to Frank rumours after 'strange' Postecoglou sacking

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven says he found Ange Postecoglou's dismissal 'strange' given the Australian proved his 'winning mentality' by ending the club's 17-year wait for a trophy. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided to bring Postecoglou's tenure to an abrupt halt last Friday, just 16 days after the north London outfit edged out Manchester United in an all-English Europa League final. The scrappy 1-0 victory secured Tottenham a place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign and Postecoglou would no doubt have been looking forward to leading his side into Europe's premier competition next season. But Spurs' woeful domestic campaign – their worst-ever in the Premier League – ultimately cost Postecoglou his job and the search is ramping up for his successor. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take over the reins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Spurs' talks with Brentford are progressing at a pace. It's understood Tottenham will have to pay a compensation fee of £10million to get a deal over the line for Frank. Asked for his thoughts on Postecoglou's sacking after the Netherlands' 8-0 thrashing of Malta, Van de Van told Voetbal Zone: 'That was ultimately a choice from the club. 'We, as players, have little to say about that. Of course, he is the first coach in a long time who has won a trophy has had success at Spurs. So if you look at it that way, it is of course a strange choice. 'It is a choice from the club about which we have little to say, so we will see what happens now.' Van de Ven admits it looks likely that Frank will be named as Postecoglou's replacement in due course. 'Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach, who it will probably be,' he added. 'So yes, a choice from the club about which we have little to say.' The Dutch centre-back believes Tottenham players must accept much of the responsibility for their 17th-placed finish which led to Postecoglou being fired. 'I think many of the players got along with him well and, of course, what I say is that he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time,' he continued. 'That also shows that he has a certain quality. It also means that he has a winning mentality, 100 per cent. More Trending 'From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired. 'What we have shown in the Premier League is, of course, unacceptable. That would, of course, have been a factor, but that was not only down to the coach.' The leading candidate to replace Postecoglou, Frank, is said to be eager to push through a switch to north London and has reportedly told the club to make Bryan Mbeumo their first summer signing. But Mbeumo is also attracting strong interest from Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils lodging a second offer worth more than £60m for the Cameroon forward in recent days. Hull name Sergej Jakirovic as new boss after reaching agreement with Kayserispor

The 48-year-old Bosnian joins on a two-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months, after the Tigers agreed a settlement with Turkish side Kayserispor. Jakirovic had only been in Turkey since January, having previously led Dinamo Zagreb to qualification for the Champions League, and succeeds Ruben Selles, who was dismissed last month after Hull narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship. Chairman Acun Ilicali said on 'We are delighted to secure the services of Sergej. Sergej's our man. 🤝 Welcoming our new head coach! 🇧🇦#hcafc — Hull City (@HullCity) June 11, 2025 'We believe in the football that he will bring to the MKM Stadium for us and, importantly, he has proven himself to be a winner throughout his career. 'My dream for our club has never changed from the first day I took over, and I believe in Sergej as we look forward to the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship campaign together as one family.' Jakirovic's backroom team of Marko Salatovic, Marin Ivancic and Andjelo Roguljic join him in moving from Kayserispor, while first-team coach Andy Dawson and goalkeeping coach Erbil Bozkurt remain on the staff. A former midfielder and Bosnia international, Jakirovic began his managerial career with Sesvete in the Croatian second tier before moving on to Gorica, Maribor, Zrinjski Mostar and Rijeka. Hull finished the season in 21st place in the Championship, staying up at the expense of Luton on goal difference.

Liverpool hero's agent admits ex-Reds star would love Anfield return this summer

While attention remains firmly placed on whether move can be sealed for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot remains in the market for a new assistant after John Heitinga's departure Dirk Kuyt would love to rejoin Liverpool as Arne Slot's assistant manager but his agent has ruled out the prospect of the Anfield cult hero replacing John Heitinga as the head coach's key lieutenant. Slot is in the market for a new assistant coach after Heitinga last week became the new boss at Ajax and that prompted speculation that former forward Kuyt could step in - having previously had a chance to work as an assistant under the Reds chief while at AZ Alkmaar. ‌ However Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen has said the move will not happen. ‌ 'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.' In a conversation on Peter Crouch's podcast earlier this season Kuyt confirmed he turned down Slot's offer at Alkmaar. 'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ,' Kuyt said. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now. "But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.' Kuyt, currently in charge of Belgian top flight side Beerschot, spent six seasons at Liverpool, scoring 71 times in 285 appearances. But his only piece of silverware was a League Cup. ‌ Among the other names linked with replacing Heitinga are Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant at AZ and Feyenoord and last month said farewell to Shakhtar Donetsk. Etienne Reijnen, the current Feyenoord assistant, was in contention for a role last summer but there were reported issues with his work permit. Liverpool have already had an active start to the off-season with Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement, while Milos Kerkez is close to being signed from Bournemouth and talks continue with Leverkusen around star man Florian Wirtz over a British record deal that could end up being worth £125m.
