Gina Gershon 'suffered PTSD over Showgirls'
The 63-year-old actress starred alongside Elizabeth Berkley in the 1995 erotic drama film, which centres on a woman who hitchhikes to Las Vegas to pursue her dreams of being a showgirl, but Gina admits that she didn't enjoy making the much-maligned movie.
She told The Independent: "I realised I have a lot of PTSD around that movie."
The film was a box-office flop and was widely panned by critics.
Gina now admits that she "knew it was going to be a disaster".
The actress shared: "They were like, this is gonna be huge – but I knew it was going to be a disaster.
"I was always happy with my work in it, but I knew that it was not going to be what people thought it would be. And I was scared, so I just told my agents, 'Get me another job before Showgirls comes out. I need to show that I really am an actress.'"
Gina has hired and fired lots of different agents over the years, but the actress doesn't have any regrets about her approach.
She explained: "I do think my career would have been much easier if I'd had agents that really got me.
"I've had to go through several different ones, because I just don't want to spend time playing characters I'm not invested in. It would have been nice if we were all on the same page, but at the end of the day, it's my book, and it's my story."
Gina believes that a lot of her projects take years to be fully appreciated, including Showgirls, which has become a cult film in recent times.
The veteran actress said: "I remember I was doing Cabaret on Broadway [in 2001] and there was a whole side of a building with my face on it. That was huge! But then, of course, it goes away, and then I'm like, 'Ooh, what if I never work again?'
"And my movies always take, like, 20 years to be seen. Critics loved Bound, but people were very, like, 'Let's sweep this under the rug because it's a lesbian movie and no one's gonna want to see it.' And Showgirls was shunned, but now it's 30 years later, and screenings of it are selling out, and people love it."

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEKEND In what feels like a time-warp, we're already about halfway through Darwin Festival – one of the most magical times of the year. I've been lucky enough to work across the festival, which means I've been able to catch a heap of the shows. This week I'm breaking the mold and combining my Local's Tip and What's On This Week into one. This weekend, make sure you embrace the highlights: circus and cabaret in the Spiegeltent, late-night music from WAFIA in Festival Park, and then dancing until the early hours at the Peachy Party in Club Awi. Last weekend's Club Awi hoedown was one for the ages – have you ever seen a line dance to Untouched by The Veronicas? Hilarious. If your Sunday calls for live music or free dance, you'll be spoiled for choice – and it's also your final chance to catch the phenomenal mentalist Suhani Shah. But here's my real local's tip: choose something random. Go out of your comfort zone. Join a silent disco. Embrace the magic. Some of my favourite festival moments so far have been completely unexpected. The first show I saw featured a rapper belting out, 'You've got to be the real you if you really want to flex' while figure skating around the stage on rollerblades – a big flex, indeed. At Fort Hill Parklands, I watched fans right up the front making eye contact with their favourite singer, singing every word back at them in perfect unison – it was pure wholesomeness. On the new Festival Harbour Cruise, Merrick Watts summed it up perfectly when he said, 'I'm so happy to be here doing a wine tasting on a boat … any other state would probably think it's too dangerous - but in Darwin it's sold out!'. For future reference, a wine tasting and then a silent disco: fun. And in a rock 'n' roll drag cabaret, the crowd roared just as loudly for a mullet contest as they did for a moment of activism – that's when you know you're in Darwin. My favourite part is soaking in the little things – the wild, the hilarious, the heartwarming. The real 'Darwin' part of Darwin Festival. SOMEWHERE YOU NEED TO EAT Speaking of Darwin talent, it's that time of the year again. The quest to find the best barista in Darwin – a very highly regarded title! Billy Joel closing beloved motorcycle shop
Billy Joel is closing his beloved motorcycle shop. The Uptown Girl hitmaker opened 20th Century Cycles on Long Island, New York, in 2010 to maintain, restore, and customise his collection of more than 75 bikes, as well as showcase them to the public for free, but after being diagnosed with rare brain disorder Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus earlier this year, he is set to close the doors on the shop in September, his spokesperson told The Independent. Billy, 76, will also aucition off his vast collection of motorbikes later this year. The bikes that were in the shop have already been moved out, though the store has been open on recent weekends to sell new, used, and vintage motorcycle parts that were in stock. Local residents are disappointed bythe news. Ted Bahr, who owns a vintage rock poster gallery next to 20th Century Cycles, said: 'I think everybody in Oyster Bay would agree that it's a big loss. 'Billy's place is visited on weekends by dozens and dozens of people, typically on motorcycles but also people in cars. People come up and look at the window all the time. I mean, it's a real destination. Billy Joel is a real superstar, and he is a hometown boy, so it's really unfortunate." Earlier this year, Billy cancelled his upcoming tour because of the brain disorder, which has caused problems with his hearing, vision and balance. A statement posted on his Instagram said: "Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance. "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage." Billy added his own message to fans, saying: "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding."

Tim Burton 'knew' Jenna Ortega was perfect for Wednesday
Tim Burton "knew right away" that Jenna Ortega was the perfect candidate to play Wednesday Addams. The 22-year-old actress plays the titular character in Wednesday, the hit Netflix series, and Tim never had any doubts that she would succeed in the role. Tim, 66 - who directs and executive produces the series - told The Independent: "You can't just ask somebody to do Wednesday Addams. They have to have it in their DNA. "Jenna reminds me a bit of what Winona [Ryder] had when I first met her on Beetlejuice. That silent movie actor thing, where they don't have to say anything. You just have Jenna stare at you, and you knew right away that was Wednesday." Tim is best known for his work in the film industry, directing hits such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. But he's also enjoyed the "spontaneous approach" of TV directing. He shared: "You don't have time to brood, or overthink things." And unlike some filmmakers, Tim doesn't have any worries about working with a streaming company. He said: "I'm pretty haphazard about how and what I choose to make – as you could tell by my career. I just kind of go, 'Ooh, I'll do that. That seems interesting.' I don't overly think about my legacy – or my tombstone." Meanwhile, Jenna previously revealed that she became an "unhappy person" after season one of Wednesday. The actress became an international star on the back of her appearances in the Netflix show - but Jenna initially struggled to cope with the pressures of fame and success. She told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person. "After the pressure, the attention - as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary." Jenna now serves as a producer on Wednesday and she's loving the experience of having a hands-on role with the show. Jenna - who has become one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood in recent years - said: "I sit in on meetings and listen and learn. I'm still finding my footing in that area."
