Easter Sunday got off to a rough start for some Cape residents due to massive power outage

A number of residents from Langa, Pinelands, Ndabeni, Epping, Bonteheuwel, and surrounding areas had their Easter Sunday get off to a rough start due to a major cable fault.
Mayco Member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, explained that early on Sunday morning City teams were alerted to a major high voltage cable fault impacting the areas, and that the cause of fault was vandalism and theft.

'City energy teams have been working 12-hour shifts non-stop to restore power to affected communities. The speed at which this intricate and challenging work has been done is almost unprecedented,' Limberg said.
'The dedication, trouble-shooting, and effort have been notable. Teams are on track to restore power by Monday evening if all goes to plan.'
A number of councillors have been updating their residents, with councillor Lwazi Pakade explaining that part of the reason for the delay in repairs on Sunday was due to City repair teams needing law enforcement escorts for safety.
He said that another reason for the delay in restoration was because 'power can't be rerouted from other substations due to grid constraints'.
By late on Sunday evening, not was Pakade on the scene, along with Bonteheuwel councillor Angus McKenzie, but so was Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis who was updating residents via social media.
McKenzie said that having a number of WhatsApp groups has helped to keep the residents informed of developments.
'The power-outage, in not just Bonteheuwel, but the surrounding areas also, has been hugely frustrating for residents… Ever since the outage I've taken to providing updates every single hour all the way through.
'I have a WhatsApp group for every street in my community, as well as various other WhatsApp groups, so residents are consistently updated with the progress of what was happening,' McKenzie said.
'The challenge with this outage was that a high-voltage cable had been vandalized and that high-voltage cable provides electricity to a number of sub-stations and those sub-stations supply to the various affected areas.'
Limberg added that City energy teams have worked through the night to do excavations and major cable repairs to restore power following significant vandalism and theft to feeders and cables.
'For this to happen, some areas that had power restored yesterday and last night due to the rerouting of supply have been placed on power rotation today. This is critical for the full restoration to take place.
'Power to areas that were restored is being shut down at short notice for periods of four hours at a time throughout the day in Bonteheuwel, Langa, and Thornton from 9am until the restoration is complete,' she said.
McKenzie that 90% of Bonteheuwel residents had power by 7pm, last night and that they are currently on rotation for that 10% that is left over.
'Residents each receive four hours of electricity until such time that the work is repaired and completed. We are hoping that the completion of the work will be around 5pm on Monday afternoon, which is something that must be commended.
'The teams have worked exceptionally hard, and under normal circumstances, specifically if you look at Eskom, these sorts of repairs will take between 7 and 14 days,' McKenzie said.
'For this repair to take just over 48 hours, and by ensuring that most residents receive their supply of electricity, the community in itself is hugely appreciative of it, despite the frustration.'
Limberg added that due to the large power supply that has to be restored, system tripping from overload is a real risk.
Residents have been advised to switch off non-essential energy equipment, heaters, pool pumps, and geysers, as it will help to restore power faster.
Factsheet for residents to note: Power rotation started in Bonteheuwel (including Netreg) and Langa from approximately 9am. Rotations to last for four hours.
Thornton will also later be put on rotation.
Customers who were on Sunday are off for four hours at a time. Those who have been off will be on in four-hour blocks until restoration is complete.
Power rotation is essential for the complete restoration to take place in this large area.
Switch off non-essential equipment and geysers to avoid large tripping and restoration delays.
Charge phones and devices if you can and prepare for four blocks of four-hour power-off times.
'The City apologises for the inconvenience, but we thank our teams who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty to help our communities,' Limberg said.
The City has recently launched a new campaign, 'Protect Your Power', where residents have been encouraged to report any vandalism, illegal connections and theft via WhatsApp or call.

Winterveld residents urged to stop dumping waste in the Tolwane River

The call was made by Department of Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister Sello Seitlholo during a clean-up campaign themed 'South Africa is a water-scarce country – clean up and protect our water resources' held on Monday. The initiative is part of the department's annual month-long Clear Rivers Campaign, held in July, which coincides with Mandela Month celebrations. The event was conducted in partnership with stakeholders and community members, raising awareness about the importance of protecting water resources for a sustainable future and environmental preservation. Next Stay Close ✕ Seitlholo highlighted that Gauteng's water is severely polluted, largely due to untreated or partially treated sewage flowing from water treatment facilities into rivers, tributaries, and ultimately dams. He said mining industries, particularly through acid mine drainage, as well as agricultural runoff and industrial activities, are significant contributors to the pollution. 'It has become the responsibility of the Department of Water and Sanitation to come and communicate and place awareness on the crisis that we are facing and that is the pollution crisis,' he said. He mentioned that Gauteng's municipalities are responsible for discharging approximately 1.5 million litres of sewage daily into water resources, resulting in severe pollution. Seitlholo cited Vaal River, which is heavily infested with water hyacinth, as an example of water resources affected by pollution. 'We are finding a situation where the Vaalkop Dam in the North West, as well as the Boschkop Dam, have got 95% and 100% coverage of alien invasive species, water salvinia, and water hyacinth, respectively. These alien invasive species take up a lot of our water,' he said. He said the dire state of water resources is a major crisis in the country that is being overlooked. He noted that while people protest when water is not coming out of their taps, they rarely do so when sewage contaminates rivers and dams. 'Everybody is so fixated on the water from the taps, forgetting that there is the beginning of the value chain, and if we don't take care of the beginning of the value chain, then we are placing the security of the final product of the value chain at risk,' he said. Ward 19 Councillor Maqaleni Mazibuko expressed gratitude towards the department for identifying the area for the clean-up campaign. He said the event provides an opportunity for locals to understand the importance of water circulation and learn about the entire value chain that delivers water to their taps. He said many people will benefit most from the campaign because it highlighted the importance of taking care of water. Concern was raised about people consuming water directly from the river due to shortages, posing potential health risks. Mazibuko said: 'That thing is very problematic because at some point, our City of Tshwane fails to fix sewers in time, and some of the raw sewage is flowing directly into the river. I think from today, we are going to get a solution as to how we ensure that our water remains purified.'

How education became the key to success for a young KZN woman

Tracy Nyongwana, a young woman from KZN, transformed her life through education, overcoming obstacles and embracing mentorship along the way Image: Supplied For Tracy Nyongwana, success didn't come by chance, but it was crafted through discipline, strategy, and an unshakeable belief in the power of education. At just 23 years old, the process engineer in training at Sasol, has completed two degrees in five years - a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry Engineering degree at Wits University. But behind the milestones is a young woman who learned early that success demands intentional choices. 'I didn't have to be the smartest,' Nyongwana said. 'I just had to be willing to learn, ask questions, believe, and keep showing up.' Raised in a disadvantaged household in Verulam, north of Durban, Nyongwana made the decision in high school that she would change her life through education, even before knowing if she'd ever afford university. Her turning point came in Grade 9, when she fought to qualify for a German-sponsored scholarship to attend school at Sacred Heart Secondary School. This meant managing long days packed with chores like cooking, cleaning, and caring for siblings, before she could sit down to study until 3am. 'It was exhausting, but the scholarship opportunity motivated me to push through,' she said. Nyongwana's academic record soared, and with it came new influences that shaped her thinking. She also received help from non-profit organisation PROTEC which provides education support primarily to disadvantaged learners and teachers in STEM-gateway subjects – Maths, Technology and Science – as well as English. Next Stay Close ✕ Nyongwana said that at PROTEC, she was inspired by alumni who had walked a similar path. 'Their stories taught me that my background doesn't define me,' she said, 'and I could become an independent, smart, and career-driven individual.' She added that she adopted a strategic mindset at university. 'I didn't focus much on making friends for fun,' she said. 'Instead, I built partnerships and intentional relationships centered around academic growth.' She actively sought out older students in her programme who were doing well and turned them into informal mentors. 'I'd ask questions like: 'What helped you pass? What would you do differently? What were your hardest modules?' That hunger to learn from others was a game-changer for me.' She admitted that even with a clear plan, there were tough moments. What carried her through was humility and faith. 'I intentionally made myself small at every table I sat at, which allowed me to learn, absorb, and grow,' she said. 'And I don't believe I could've done it without God.' Nyongwana said finding mentors was invaluable to her. It was a mentor who first told her about the Sasol bursary, which was an opportunity she hadn't known existed. 'She even helped me prepare for the interviews,' Nyongwana said. 'When I finally received that Sasol bursary in 2022, something inside me shifted. I could see the light. I was on the path. I was 'becoming that girl', the woman I had dreamed of becoming. 'The inspiration my mentors gave me now fuels my desire to pour into someone else's cup,' she said. Today, she mentors students who remind her of where she once stood determined, but uncertain. Her current focus is on becoming the best engineer she can be. 'I'm not rushing the process,' she said. Long-term, she's eyeing a future in leadership, perhaps through mining or business. 'I genuinely believe I'm being prepared for something greater, something bigger than just a job title. 'Whatever path I take, one thing I know for sure is that I want to 'be that girl', the one who broke the cycle, the one who rose despite the odds, the one who stayed humble, worked hard, and walked in faith.'
