Three valley schools advance to World Robotics Championship
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Three Las Vegas valley school teams secured their place in the World Robotic Championship after showcasing their engineering, programming, and team skills Saturday.
The Nevada State Elementary VEX IQ Robotics Championship took place at Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon, which brought together 25 teams from across the state.
The participants demonstrated their skills in robot building, programming, driving, and teamwork, competing for a chance to advance to the World Robotics Championship in Dallas this May.
These top three teams earned a spot in the international competition: Eagle IQ from Coral Academy Cadence of Henderson, Mythri Deadly Demons of Mythri STEM Academy of Henderson, and Cyber Storm from Engineering for Kids of Las Vegas.
The VEX IQ Robotics Competition is organized by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation, which aims to offer elementary and middle school students a platform to explore robotics and research project challenges.
By allowing students to get hands-on learning experience, the program aims to enhance students' science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills.
Tesla was the presenting sponsor for this championship, with additional support from Nothing Bundt Cakes, SCS Engineering, and Chik-fil-A.

Flames, heavy smoke damage home near 215, Summerlin Parkway
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Firefighters fought flames and smoke at a Summerlin home in the west valley Thursday morning. Smoke from the fire, which was reported around 6:40 a.m., could be seen from many parts of the Las Vegas valley. The home is located on Clarion Lane near Summerlin Parkway and the 215 Beltway. It's believed the fire may have started in the garage and spread into the home's attic. The garage roof collapsed during the fire, and the home received significant damage. The owner of the home told 8NewsNow he had two vehicles in the garage, including a 1957 Chevy Corvette Convertible that was used in the movie 'La Bamba,' which told the story of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ritchie Valens. No details on what caused the fire or the extent of damage were released. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Driver killed, truck hits historic building in Death Valley National Park
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A truck driver died Tuesday when a tractor-trailer rig ran off the road and into a building in Death Valley National Park, officials said on Wednesday. The single-vehicle crash scattered debris and left diesel fuel on CA-190 between Stovepipe Wells and Towne Pass, closing the main road through the park for about 22 hours. The road reopened at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The crash was likely caused by a brake malfunction, officials said. CA-190 has long, steep grades on both sides of Towne Pass, and truck fires have been a problem recently. An electrical contractor truck burned after descending Towne Pass on April 9. Six commercial trucks and one fifth-wheel RV caught on fire below Towne Pass in 2024. LAST YEAR: Truck fire marks 8th of 2024 on steep Death Valley road The truck collided with the historic stone Emigrant Ranger Station, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It hit the building's porch, destroying two stone columns, damaging the roof and breaking windows, park officials said. Stan Jones wrote the song 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' while living in the building and working as a park ranger in 1947, officials said. The building hasn't been used for several decades. A hazmat team worked overnight to clean up the spill. The truck was carrying a load from a mine in the Searles Valley Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
