VilniuscTypeface:> German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier pledged his country's support in maintaining Lithuanian freedom during a visit to Vilnius to attend national day celebrations on Sunday.
'With the stationing of a German brigade in Lithuania, we are making a lasting promise: Your security is our security,' Steinmeier said at the celebrations.
He later plans to visit the headquarters of the German armoured brigade in Lithuania, which is preparing for the unit's deployment to the country.
'This brigade represents mutual responsibility and loyalty to the alliance, as we know that whoever defends Lithuania defends Europe and defends Europe's values. And that is what you do, dear Lithuanians, every day,' Steinmeier said.
From 2027, around 5,000 soldiers of the German armoured brigade are to be permanently stationed in Lithuania to protect the Baltic country against threats from Russia and strengthen NATO's eastern flank. (DPA)

Polish officials will begin checks at German border from today

WarsawcTypeface:> Polish officials will begin checks on the border with Germany on Monday, focusing on vehicles with tinted windows and those carrying multiple passengers, border guard spokesman Konrad Szwed told the PAP news agency. The spot checks will concentrate on buses, minibuses and cars with multiple passengers, he said. 'Vehicles with tinted windows will also be in focus,' Szwed said. Poland is introducing checks on the German border from midnight on Sunday in response to German moves to block irregular migration directly at the border. The Polish authorities will also be conducting checks along the Lithuanian border. Germany has been conducting spot checks on the Polish border since October 2023, but German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced shortly after taking office in May that these checks would be stepped up and that asylum seekers could be turned back at the border. Ukrainian drones disrupt air traffic over Russia

MoscowcTypeface:> Ukrainian drones caused severe disruptions to Russian air traffic on Sunday, forcing authorities to suspend flights at several major airports. Flights were temporarily halted at Moscow's largest airport, Sheremetyevo, as well as at Pulkovo Airport near St Petersburg, the state news agency TASS reported. Air traffic was also suspended near the city of Kirov, about 800 kilometres north-east of Moscow. Six Ukrainian drones were shot down as they approached the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. In Kaluga, south-west of Moscow, seven drones were destroyed, according to official statements, while air defences hit two drones near St Petersburg. Russia did not give information about any damage or other impact from the drones. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's full-scale invasion for more than three years. As part of its strategy, it frequently targets Russian territory, but the damage caused by Ukrainian drones is dwarfed by the devastation inflicted by Russian drones and missiles in Ukraine. (DPA)
