High school students get hands-on welding experience
Waco, Tx (FOX 44) – A month-long welding boot camp is giving Robinson High School students a leg up toward a new career for those not planning to go to college.
Juniors and seniors are taking advantage of the program at a new workforce training facility that is a partnership between Texas State Technical College, McLennan County and the City of Waco.
The facility on Wycon Drive is called The WorkSITE (for 'skills, innovation, training and education').
The Robinson students are the first to work in the WorkSITE welding lab in a building that itself only opened in February.
Drake Morphis is one of the Robinson students involved in the boot camp which runs through June 30.
'I've never used equipment straight out of the box like that,' Morphis said. 'It's definitely an improvement on what I know, and I'm still kind of trying to get used to that, but I think it's going to pay off. I think it's going to help me sharpen my abilities.'
Alicia Cruz is the associate program lead at The WorkSITE. She says its been good to see what is happening in the welding program.
'Watching these young minds dive into hands-on learning, achieving real-world skills and bringing their creativity to life, is a great way to christen the lab,' she said.
Michael Beridon, a senior at Robinson High School, said he enjoys welding because he is not sitting in an office all day. He considers the summer welding lessons a preview of what he will encounter when he enrolls next year to study Welding Technology at TSTC.
Zac Cox, an instructor in TSTC's Welding Technology program, is teaching the month-long training using a condensed curriculum. He said the first two weeks of the training focus on shielded metal arc welding, with additional teaching planned for gas metal arc and flux-cored arc welding.
The welding boot camp is made possible through a partnership between the Robinson Independent School District – Texas ACE (Afterschool Centers on Education) program and The WorkSITE. The summer session is at no cost to the students.

Falcons RB Bijan Robinson: I want more 'explosive' plays next season
Bijan Robinson is the heart and soul of the Atlanta Falcons offense, but the star running back wants more. "We're done with 30-yard runs and all that stuff. Now it's time to get those 60 yards, 50 yards. So, I've been doing a lot more explosive drills," Robinson said on Tuesday, according to the Falcons' team website. "I've been doing a lot more running — 100 yards, like sprinting — so we can be prepared for, God willing, when those moments come in all the games." Robinson is coming off a potent 2024 campaign. The then-second-year back rushed for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns on 4.8 yards per carry, while also totaling 61 receptions for 431 yards and one score. Robinson ranked second among running backs in both overall grade (92.8) and rushing grade (92.8) and fourth in receiving grade (82.2), according to Pro Football Focus. That said, Robinson has seldom ripped off chunk plays, as he alluded to. Even in a 2024 season that saw him earn a Pro Bowl honor, Robinson had just five carries of 20-plus yards and zero carries of 40-plus yards. For perspective, star running backs Derrick Henry (19), Saquon Barkley (17), Jahmyr Gibbs (13) and Jonathan Taylor (11) had a double-digit number of 20-plus-yard rushes, while Barkley had seven carries for 40-plus yards and Henry had five carries for 20-plus yards. In his 2023 rookie campaign, Robinson rushed for 976 yards and four touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry. Robinson's production shot up in 2024 due to increased usage, as he had just 214 carries in 2023 compared to 304 carries in 2024; fellow Falcons back Tyler Allgeier had 186 carries in 2023, compared to 137 carries last season. Atlanta selected Robinson with the No. 8 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas. In his freshman season (2020), Robinson led the Big 12 with 8.2 yards per carry. Two seasons later (2022), he rushed for a conference-high with both 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns on 6.1 yards per carry. "I work on it every single day," Robinson, who asserted that he can break defenders down "two at a time," said about pulling off explosive plays. "Obviously, the explosives, we always want them. We've added so many things to this offense so we can create more explosives. And, for me, sometimes it's that one defender, but now that's all. That's what I've been working on all offseason, just seeing that free hitter and making moves off him." Last year, Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season, totaling 2,005 yards on the ground in 16 regular-season games for the Philadelphia Eagles. Does Robinson have that feat in him? "We all want it. We're all waiting for that Saquon type of season when it comes to explosives," Robinson said. "But I've been working on it a lot this offseason. And, obviously, when it gets to the season, it's time to go show it and go do the work the right way." Robinson and the Falcons open the 2025 regular season at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 7 (1 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Fraudster conned luxury hotels and retailers out of £580k by selling fake Scottish tea
A man has been found guilty of fraud totalling almost £600,000 after he passed off ordinary tea as a premium product grown in Scotland. Thomas Robinson, 52, claimed the tea was a unique variety he had grown at his Perthshire estate using innovative techniques. Operating as The Wee Tea Plantation, he then fraudulently sold it to high-profile clients in the hospitality sector, including luxury hotels and retailers, between January 2014 and February 2019. Varieties listed on the website - which touted partnerships with train operator Caledonian Sleeper and the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh - include Dalreoch White, Silver Needles, Scottish Antlers Tea, and Highland Green. Also known as Tam O'Braan and Thomas O'Brien, Robinson was found to have misled genuine Scottish tea growers by selling them plants he falsely claimed were a unique, locally-grown variety. He also bolstered his credibility by fabricating academic qualifications and industry awards. An investigation by Food Standards Scotland (FSS) found Robinson's misrepresentations led to his clients losing a total of £584,783. He was found guilty of two counts of fraud by a jury at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday, and is due to be sentenced at Stirling Sheriff Court on 25 June. Read more from Scotland: In a statement, Ron McNaughton, head of Scottish food crime and incidents unit at FSS, said: "This was not a victimless crime - individuals, businesses, and an emerging sector of genuine Scottish tea growers suffered real financial and reputational harm as a result of deliberate deception." He then thanked a witness who came forward and added: "Fraud of this nature is often difficult to detect and even harder to prove, but we were determined to pursue every line of inquiry to build the strongest possible case."
