Ahead of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama, MLB released its list of the top 150 prospects for the 2025 MLB draft.
Among the prospects, Tennessee right-handed pitcher AJ Russell ranks No. 55 overall. He ranks No. 11 among right-handed pitchers on the list.
"Russell has a unicorn fastball that could grade as a true 80 offering if he adds more velocity," his scouting profile says. "It sits at 92-94 mph and tops out at 98 with the best heater metrics in the Draft thanks to an exceptionally low release point, wide angle, significant armside run and carry up in the zone."
Russell was a bullpen fixture as a freshman in 2023. He pitched 30.1 innings and totaled 47 strikeouts, while allowing nine hits, four runs and seven walks.
Russell appeared in six games in 2024 and underwent Tommy John surgery at the conclusion of the season. He pitched 14.1 innings, recording 21 strikeouts and allowed 12 hits, eight runs and eight walks.
His first appearance after surgery this season was against North Alabama on Feb. 25. In eight appearances, Russell has pitched 15 innings and struck out 20 batters, while allowing 12 hits, six runs and seven walks.

The Rockies established themselves as possibly the worst team in baseball history on Sunday, during yet another loss. Colorado has now played more games in a season than any team in Major League Baseball history without getting a 10th win, per USA Today. Advertisement The club set this record of futility on Sunday by losing to the New York Mets, 5-3. The Rockies led after three innings, but couldn't hold on to win. Colorado has now played 59 games this year, with wins in just nine of them. Only four other teams have played at least 55 games before getting a 10th win, per the outlet. They are: the 1895 Louisville Colonels, the 1904 Washington Senators, the 1886 Washington Nationals, and the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. All four of those teams picked up a 10th win by their 59th game. But not the Rockies, who are now 9-50 on the season. The Rockies could set the MLB season record for losses this year The futility of the Rockies this season is quite remarkable. Colorado is on track to lose more than 130 games, which would be a MLB record. Just last season, the Chicago White Sox lost 121. Advertisement The Rockies fired manager Bud Black in the midst of this nightmarish season. Colorado's interim manager is former third-base coach Warren Schaeffer, who also may not last the entire season. It doesn't help the club that they play in the National League West, with some of the best teams in baseball this season. Colorado currently trails the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in that division by 27.5 games. The lowly Rockies have won just three games so far this season away from Coors Field. Colorado's struggles are due in part to their offense. The team is dead last in MLB this year in batting average, runs batted in, and hits, per MLB stats. The Lou Gehrig Day complete set will retail for $59.99 and is available until June 12 at 4 p.m. ET. Randomly inserted parallels include 'Iron' Dark Silver /25, Dark Blue /4 and Gold 1/1s. Net proceeds from the set and auctions will be donated to the Sean M. Healey Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital. MLB established June 2 as Lou Gehrig Day in 2021 with an annual commemoration involving all 30 teams. Known as the 'Iron Horse,' Gehrig played 17 seasons for the New York Yankees before retiring due to an ailment that would later be identified as ALS. Gehrig retired as a seven-time All-Star, six-time World Series champion and two-time American League MVP.
